$79 really ??
I guess they reckon if you can afford the new MacBook then you can find an extra $79
Yes, that seems like a very high profit margin. Apple also seems to prevent other companies from making peripherals without going through them for licensing. This is definitely one of the downsides of a proprietary approach like Apples, you end up paying quite a bit more versus alternative systems which are open. Ultimately though you can still decide to forego the proprietary approach if it doesn't meet your needs.
I've bought 3rd party peripals, & they don't work very well. It is best to buy from Apple. It always works, tho they are a bit expensive. You pay for what you get.
As I understand it, USB-C is not an Apple technology. So if standard, non-Apple peripherals don't work with the new MacBook, then Apple is in the wrong because they haven't implemented the tech according to specification.
Thats good news because any manufacturer should be able to build USB-C adapters that will work.
We don't need this Lightining, we need an usb-C port on our iPad :-)
Who knows, but i've got a pretty strong feeling USB-C will be standard in the next revision/generation of iPhone(s) and iPad(s).
The crossover period is well underway
I will be very miffed if it is having spent lots of money on 30 pin to Lightning addaptors ...
Sounds good. You have my vote
If Apple was involved in the development of USB-C, and USB-C could replace Lightning, why wouldn't they have just waited until USB-C was ready and use that as the primary port on iOS devices?
They sure got enough backlash when switching from 30-pin. To switch again this quickly seems extreme for them. But I would love to see a USB-C port in addition to the Lightning port!
What about a Lightning to USB-C adaptor that replaces the standard Lightning to USB adaptor? Then you could plug the adaptor above in, or any USB-C breakout type cable. ($150 in Adaptors later...)
Here's a Chromebook Pixel video explaining the USB-C standard. This article goes in the details of USB-C as well as the other versions of USB.
