Tape effect? Lo-fi, warble?

I'm thinking about picking up an iPad Air soon (still sort of on the fence). I've done some searching online and have been unable to find a good tape effect for the iOs. I've previously used u-He Satin, Kramer Master Tape, and my favourite solution was a Strymon El Capistan with the delay set to zero. Is there anything similar out for iOS that I missed?

  • I don't know how it compares to the ones you've used previously, but MasterRecord simulates some aspects of tape warmth and sounds good to me.

  • Thanks guys, Flux is definitely on my list of apps to pickup, I'll check out MasterRecord too. I'm mostly an acoustic guitar kind of guy, but I wouldn't mind dabbling with some Boards of Canada type stuff.

  • AU:FX has a built in tape effect but if you're talking about master/mixbus effects that emulate analog i only know of the MasterRecord mentioned above.

  • +1 for AUFX:Dub, I use that one all the time.

  • Master Record is great for that BoC vibe. You can make stuff sound nice and worn out.

This is a good suggestion, too

  • can you guys expand on master records 'you can do '-ness of this sound. how does it do it?

  • @mattgnarly Flux. And if you still on the fence, it seems to me that the Air1, like a bench QB, is finding its status burnished with each passing week. Have to say I am very happy with mine....

I had to giggle at the fleeting hilarity of this image.

There are several presets, but you can pick from different types of saturation/ noise: vinyl, cassette, reel, and then really mess with the amount of each. The cassette can have a lot of flutter/warble and you can really need with the warmth of each.

  • the best tape emulator for iOS are inside Auria, I love MicroWarmer but Saturn is cool too :-)

  • Well I took the plunge and picked up an iPad Air. I owned an iPad before but gave it to my pops, so I already had a bunch of apps ready to go. I really liked Aufx:Dub and MasterRecorder for the tape effects. Flux is a bit complicated so I'll have to give it a go when I have a bit of free time. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

  • thanks Bv

Yeah as above. masterecord and aufx dub. Both you can shape the effect pretty well to get sound you want

  • Space echo is good, but it's not audiobus, IAA compatible. Cubasis with Tape Echo(IAP) is not bad. Also, Tonestack FX is good too. But none have emulated the Roland Space Echo, properly( as I make Reggae Dub(King Tubby Stylee)/ House Dub, ect. I emailed the makers of GS Space echo VST if they would make it for IOS...... They said no! :-(

  • What about Turnado?

I don't know whether it's proper, but JamUp has a version of the Roland unit available as an IAP.

  • Yes I know. I have it. It's not quite sounding as the original. Also, you cannot twiddle the adjustments on the knobs(live)because it is restricted to only the basic few, so you cannot abuse the sound very well. Look at YouTube of the Roland SE301 demos,,,then the GSi 301 VST, then our beloved iPad? I said this before, in another thread, but I wished a Device would make a Space Echo emulator. It's like the Spring Reverb(tho as I'm talking of Reggae Dub music). The only decent Spring Reverb, is the PSP Spring( which we have in Auria & on my PC)..... The IOS apps FX, are close, but no Cigar to the original Vintage Analogue Units of yesteryear.

  • Master Record has top notch tape effects. The flutter, saturation and noise modules all work together to create a great tape sound. Absolutely a go-to app for that sound on iOS.
