Should I buy an Air 1 with iOS8?

  • @monzo we can all only give you our own opinion. Some people like to get a previous model at a good price. Some will go for the latest and keep it a while.

I went from ipad1 to air1 and it really stepped everything up. Ultimately either air 1 or 2 is going to be a fantastic upgrade for you but only you can gauge what you will feel comfortable with spending.

A few issues with the current OS shouldn't sway your decision but @JohnnyGoodyear is right about Auria if that particular app is important for you.

  • An iPad 4 would be a step up for me :) I think it really boils down to how much extra the Air 2 will provide for the additional money, and will it be more future-proof. I think if I go for an Air 1 I'll go secondhand, if it's a 2 I'll probably buy a new one.

  • Go into John Lewis, they often have a random and sporadic collection of reduced stuff, including iPads, at marginally or occasionally ludicrously tempting prices even at this time of year. It can vary from one week to the next though, so it just requires frequent visits. It's usually customer returned stuff. I got a Sony CX410 there in Stratford Westfield JL some weeks ago, which eventually went down to £200 and because they couldn't find the battery which i pointed out costs £99 on their website, they then dropped the camcorder to £150. I took it home and put my spare battery in and it's fine.

  • @u0421793 - One of the problems I have is that living in the middle of nowhere it's a two hour round trip to the nearest big town, and even then they don't have the bigger stores that carry the electrical departments - I'd definitely be scouring the bargain bins otherwise.

I think I've come up with a plan though. One of the things holding me back was the mystical iPad Pro - but checking out MacRumours this morning it doesn't look like it'll be released until October. So I think I'll skip the Air2, look for a cheap secondhand or refurb Air1 and enjoy the performance boost over my iPad2 until the Pro comes out. If that's fantastically enticing then I'll sell the Air1 and get the Pro.

Just a couple of quick questions - would I get away with a 16gb model or does the new iOS really eat up disk space? And are all the Air1 models the same spec - apart from the storage?

    Thanks for the feedback

  • You need more than 16Gb

  • I did a direct test a while back between Air's 1 and 2.

Obvious improvements in CPU with Air 2. I do have occasional weird things happen but fingers crossed for 8.3.
Another thing is I really don't like the Air 1 screen as much as the 2, or 4 gen neither. It seems very plastic to my touch.

That would definitely rule out the Air2 for me then as the next step up from 16gb is 64gb at £479. Just reading up about ios8 and 16gb is going to be too small as you say.

    32gb Air1 it is then...

  • It would probably be just about possible if you kept everything on Dropbox and had Wi Fi the whole time.

Or never used any samples etc.

But IMO it would be a massive PITA.

Yeah, I'm usually pretty full with my 32gb iPad2, though I could cull a few unused apps and samples. That's good though I've whittled it down to a minimum spec now, 32gb Air 1. They seem to go for around £250 - £300 secondhand and £330 new via Amazon.

  • Good plan. Must be the 32. Minimum.

  • get 32mb minimum, but if you can afford it, get 64mb. when i bought my air1 i was hesitating between 32 and 64, and i'm super glad i got 64.

otherwise, good plan to get the air1.

  • @monzo,

As you've said ebay is currently selling 32GB Airs for around £270 (on average). It's worth really trawling it over a few days as there are always new ones being listed and some ones go under £250. Sunday seems to be a
    good day to buy.

I've found 32GB to be fine so far, but I haven't started on a big project in earnest. I'm sure an Air 2 is better (once the bug is fixed), but I'm finding the Air to be fine. As a step up form an iPad 2, I'm sure it will seem rather speedy !

  • Thanks. I notice the 64gb version seems to be around the same price as the Air2 on Amazon, I guess because it's been discontinued on the Apple store. Not sure about the sellers on Amazon - prices are cheaper but they all look a bit dodgy.

  • dont listen to these get a 128gb ;)

  • @DaveMagoo I don't think you were at the meeting/got the memo: While we all know he should go with the 128 (or at least the 64) this patient is having a very difficult time committing and thus we have decided just to encourage him to move forward in any way he feels comfortable. Thanks.

It works better if you nudge me in stages. I'll probably end up buying the 128gb Air2 via Apple

  • Every computer I have bought since the Atari ST running Cubase 1 has had some issue or other with complying with my musical needs and desires.
Ultimately , You just have to work around the idiosyncrasies of the hardware and software.
I love my new air 2 64 gold ipad especially as an upgrade from the ipad 3. It can do so much more for me on the music front. Apart from that , the camera is totally fantastic as well as all the other new bling.
Seems to me that unless you immediately really need a dozen un glitching gadgets running through flux etc then the choice is clear. I'm sure the air 1 is a good machine but it is old technology now. Here in Australia the air 2 cost me $635 aud (327 pounds!) after price matching.
An air 1 32 gb is available for$489 aud.
With the extra memory, ram , camera, fingerprint , not to mention resale value, etc the Air 2 is , to me, a far better investment. At least Apple does regular os updates and is obviously listening to the music community. Also, the developers are doing a fantastic job keeping up with the technology changes. Audiobus after the new update is heaps smoother for me.

@monzo Jump on in man, the waters fine..

  • Thats a good price - is it possible to transfer the Apple warranty?

    @jes - blimey - that's a lot cheaper than the UK prices!

    from the ebay listing...

  • EVERYTHING is always cheaper than uk prices - the biggest scammers in the smallest country !

  • I'm a bit nervous of buying secondhand after reading a few horror stories of warranties not being transferred and the ipads dying after a few weeks. The majority of purchases are probably fine, but it's the minority I'm worried about. The problem is there doesn't seem to be much of a saving buying from places like eBay to compensate the potential risk. Hmmm. I've seen one listed about an hours drive from here which seems ok, but has a scratch on the back. Might be worth a look.

Thanks, sorry I missed this before.

I'm now edging towards a 64gb Air 2. Even with the current bugs it'll be faster than what I have, hopefully, and should be more future proof. Auria Pro will probably be built to work better on the Air 2 and as I'll be using this for recording (hopefully it won't be mega expensive) it seems a sensible choice.

  • No problem. Also, I've noticed that when anything weird with the CPU happens in Auria, I just close it and reopen it (sometimes more than once) and it usually stops acting up.

Are there any other unresolved issues regarding the iPad2? I notice the scroll-bug, or whatever it's called that affected Gadget seems to have been resolved with the beta iOS8 update - just wondered if there's anything else I should be aware of.

    Thanks....I'm getting there!
