Latency in ToneStack

I'm running TS on an iPhone 4s as an only app in airplane mode as a amp sim/fx processor for my guitar for live use. It sounds great but there is a noticeable latency even at a lowest buffer of 128. I bought iPhone 5s and tried to use that but results are the same. The latency isn't unplayable, in fact I manage some 16ths at 140bmp without too much effort but I'd rather not have to use my brain to compensate. I almost pulled a trigger on amplitube since it is on sale but thought I'd ask here to see if my fellow guitarists have any good advice. Have had more luck with one app or the other? I very happy with ToneStack as far as sounds are concerned.

  • I would test your hardware. Your audio interface will always add a certain amount of latency.

Is it the same latency with a direct connection thru Audiobus? Mic in >> speaker out

  • I haven't tested it with audiobus as I thought adding an extra app would add load if anything. I have tested same configuration on iPhone 5s with the same results. As I said it's not bad but would do with slightly better response. Do you think running it through an might improve it?

I'm suggesting testing the latency with no effects. Just straight thru Audiobus mic in/ speaker out.

edit: Doing this would demonstrate if it is just your standard hardware latency or whether ToneStack is actually increasing your latency in any noticeable way.

I don't think running TS thru Audiobus would improve the latency.

  • Gotcha, yes good point. Even if having it tested on a more powerful device and different effect configurations I always got the same latency which I suspect is higher than 128 as I found 128 setting more than adequate for Impaktor in which I expect latency problems would be more obvious being percussive etc.

  • Updated to the latest version of ts and seems like it's slightly better. Shall see on Friday during the band practice. Cheers @Hmtx

  • If ya wanna come to my place to try running it through my iODock into your iPhone lemme know ;)
