iPad1 sync to iPad-Air? Best use for it?

I was given an iPad1. There are still PLENTY of older apps that run just fine. To think that this think is maybe 5 yrs old and is already "sooo old"...Sigh...
I'd be happy to use it, if not as an instrument/sound-source, than as a touchscreen MIDI controller for the iAir, but am not sure how to get the two talking to one another. Is WiFi/WIST really my best option? Bluetooth LE connections don't work because the iPad1 doesn't have the appropriate version [only has non-LE Bluetooth].

My question for you, is there are a hardwire way of linking/MIDI-syncing my ipad1 to my master ipadAir? Or at least getting the i1 to pass MIDI control commands to the iAir?

Other thoughts on the best way to incorporate this into my current Air/ioDock setup? What would you do with it?

  • Oh. Dock. Not sure about that. I used a pair of those cheap HDE USB MIDI Converters back to back.

  • What @dwarman said. Simple, solid and inexpensive.

  • Thanks for the feedback!

@solador78 - Apollo is a non-starter. IPad1's are stuck at iOS 5.1.1 and Apollo requires at least iOS6 I think.
While I do use Apollo to link my phone as a control surface to my Air, as per Apollo / Secret Base's website: [Emphasis theirs]
"Apollo...IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the iPad 1 or iPad 2, or the iPhone 4 and earlier. The app uses Bluetooth LE, which IS NOT AVAILABLE on earlier devices. If you download the app to an earlier device, it will not work. There are significant hardware differences between Bluetooth (which all iDevices support), and Bluetooth LE (which only the more recent devices support). Again, to try to be as clear as possible on this -- Apollo will not work on the iPad 1 and 2, or on the iPhone 1, 3g, 3gs, or 4."

So, you had 2 ipads, 2 HDE USB->MIDI cables, and had 2 Camera Connection Kits and just plugged the MIDI cables in to one another flip flopped? ( I don't own a CCK for the 30-pin iPad1)

  • Yup. Clunky but it worked.

  • Whoa... @dwarman ... that's big news... Thanks. I never knew this was possible. I happen to already have 2 CCKs... so this could be a perfect solution for say, my iPhone as a midi controller for my iPad.

    Love it!

Before I buy on Amazon, what's the latency like please?

  • Well I just bought 2 for a grand total of £6.00. So I guess i'll find out! :).

Being the MIDIot that I am, even this hardware setup confuses me. Aren't they all "male" type midi ends? How do you pair them back to back?

  • ...and that is something completely obvious that I did not know.

    Thank you @drarman

  • Looks like 2nd hand 30pin irig midi and midi mobilizers go for peanuts on eBay in the US.
