  • Amazing, thats perfect. I will test this in abelton live, cheers

I'm pretty stoked about this update!

The MIDI and audio is basically working on Studio One from my iPad to my MacBook. But for some reason it's just not clear how to send and receive the audio from one track in Studio One to another so I can record it. Does anyone know how to do this for Studio One? Cheers, Joe

  • FYI,

    Got some success tonight.

I figured out how to send the audio track that has the Music IO AU plugin --- allowing audio and midi with the USB-connected iOS device -- to Bus 1, and then use Bus 1 as the input to another track.

It has been working, albeit inconsistently.

But when it works, I can do the following with an iOS app like Animoog:

    • Play it from a keyboard connected to my Macbook
    • Hear the audio from the iPad in my Macbook
    • Record the audio in Studio One

    It didn't work as follows:

    • Anything in channel 3 of MusicIO
    • iReal Pro wouldn't work. Strangely, it didn't even consistently do the "Play" function on my iPad, so I don't know if that's just iReal Pro, or if something about the Music IO that could have caused it.

Anyway, it's cool, and hopefully gets more reliable as time goes on. I have a number of nice iOS music apps to use if this works out.

    Cheers,

    • Joe
  • I love this app, great work. If anyone else uses maschine, this plays along lovely with it.
This is a much nicer solution than my usual midi adapter and audio leads.

  • @joegrant413 -- I took a quick look at iRealB. Something funky with it -- its audio engine doesn't start up correctly from Music IO. If you start it separately, and then add it to Music IO, it does connect and stream audio. A bit weird, but you should be able to get it to work.

We're close to having another update out -- streaming four channels of audio in both directions (you can use the VST or AU plug-ins to stream from a DAW track, out to iOS, through an effects app, and then back into the DAW track). Assuming the folks in Cupertino like us, it should happen some time early next week.

  • Thanks! I'll try iRealB again.

  • And to keep folks in the loop -- version 1.30 will come out on Friday. This will have four stereo channels of bi-directional audio. The obvious use case is for things like guitar effects apps (I've been doing a lot of "testing" with ToneStack lately). You can route audio directly from a DAW track, through the VST or AU plug in, out to an iOS device, through an effects app, and then back into the DAW track.

We've also added support for different sample rates, and have made some improvements to latency, and reduced audio glitches.

We've also put together a new app that is MIDI-only. This will release on Friday as well, and will be free for a limited time -- so if you're on the fence about trying things out, or you just need MIDI, make sure you pick it up!

    Sounds great!

  • @secretbasedesign any word on a windows vst?

  • So how is the rewire Thingy coming along?

  • @Jose_Bee -- no announcement on Windows yet.
@o_imseng -- no announcement on ReWire yet.
(I'm generally optimistic, and we've got some things working -- but if I say that we'll have everything done by X date, there will immediately be a ton of 1-star reviews for the app, from people griping that they shouldn't have to wait until X because they want it NOW! And it would be pure chaos if we don't hit a release on X date.)

  • @SecretBaseDesign,

If you need any beta testers for windows count me in!

No worries :-) Just out of technical curiosity. We can discuss this via eMail if you are up to it :-)

  • Has anyone tried the latest version and seen how well the audio works both ways?

  • Ummm... I had no luck trying what I wanted to do just now. Hoping I could send audio from Macbook to Loopy on the iPad. Or to have the signal of my bass go from MacBook to JamUp and back. Couldn't make it work.

Granted, I didn't give it a college try, just tried a few things over 10 minutes or so. But no luck.

    Thx,

    • Joe
  • @joegrant413 -- send an email to support, and we'll help you get this going...

  • Ok, now I am interested too ;-) Tried it from Cubase to Cubasis, no luck. The other direction no problem. On the website https://musicio.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/sections/200626067-FAQ this should be added if there is a way to. Like this https://musicio.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/204648648-Routing-Audio-with-the-AU-or-VST-Plug-Ins.
For now it's like fishing in murky waters without additional information.

  • IAA with Cubasis seems a bit flaky (at least audio coming out of Cubasis). Steinberg contacted us about this, and it looks like a general problem in their code (AudioShare can't get audio from Cubasis using IAA either). So -- for an effects app, you might want to try something else. I've had good luck with ToneStack, Flux, Haggis, and EchoPad has worked (but acts a little odd). Dan has been using MobilePod for his testing. I think that Nic has mostly been using the AU:FX series from Kymatica.

To get the effects loop going, there are a couple of things:
    1) Drop the VST/AU into a DAW track that has an audio input (I use a guitar interface, or you could put it onto any sort of audio track -- it will work with an internal synth, too).
    2) Toggle on FX Loop for the appropriate track in the Music IO Mac server. To keep data flowing across USB to a minimum, audio received from the DAW is only forwarded if the FX Loop is toggled on.
    3) Make sure you have an effect app (or an instrument) on the Music IO iOS track. Audio from your DAW won't be sent unless there's something for it to go to.

We need to update the FAQs, and do some more documentation.... And I need to get off my duff, and finish my effects video.

  • @SBD, please, write a windows version. thanks

  • @SecretBaseDesign, thanks will try this out.
