  • Didn't show up for me, I'd long deleted it. After I downloaded again, the update is immediately there

  • Very cool new version with built in synth, drum m/c and effects rack. Nice.

  • dropped in price too for the update, glad I waited til now. Looking forward to playing with this :)

  • bleep!BOX is 50% off too.

Can't find this new "longest pattern" song mode mentioned in the update. Otherwise the app looks virtually identical to the last version. Must be a lot of new stuff under the hood that can't be seen in the UI?

In an email from the dev a long time ago he mentioned that 2.0 was going to allow for cells of different lengths playable in the song window. I haven't had a chance to test this.

only had a quick look, but have found the instruments and effects (I think that's new, but am a new user myself)... a synth, drum machine, filters etc.
It would be good if you could save an IAA synth in this chain like in Pro Midi. But for now this is useful for sketching song ideas.

  • I cannot find the new instruments rack?

  • edited March 2015

    @bsantoro

    • Press the 'Mixer Icon' on a track
    • Answer 'Yes' to convert to 'Instrument Track'
    • Press 'Edit' (Top right on screen) and add the devices you'd like to have on the track and do the routing.

(Took me some time to find it too).

  • ... the helpfile has been updated too! (So I know you get to the instruments via the mixer-symbol in sequencer-view.)

  • Has anyone found the metronome? That was the single biggest request I had for this app. Probably gonna give this one another spin!

Good sleuthing. Never did pull the trigger on this one. Would welcome anyone's thoughts why one should dive in (if one already has Pro Midi, StepPolyArp, iSequencer etc etc)....

  • Genome's nice because it's almost an Ableton-style clip-based MIDI sequencer. I need to mess with Pro MIDI a bit more but I remember Genome was a bit easier to navigate. Also I like the live looping of a MIDI sequence in Genome.

If you like the other MIDI sequencers you've got though, I wouldn't consider Genome absolutely necessary.

  • Oh, and one other thing I love about this update is the AB implementation. Just for being added to the sidebar (ala-MIDISequencer), super helpful!!!

To me Genome is more of a compositional tool, and a bit like playing cards. In the top section you create your playing cards (or 'cells') in the form of bits of midi data. A cell could be a midi drum loop, a single bar melody, a multi-bar sequence, chord or series of chords, bass line, or whatever as long as it's midi data. You can organize them by track number so on Track 1 you could have your drum grooves, Track 2 your bass lines, etc. Each track can store multiple cells.

Once you get all of your cells set up, in the bottom song window is where you would deal the cards you made. Each frame of the song window will play whatever cards you've dealt to that frame. String together multiple frames to form a song. It's pretty easy and really a lot of fun. If you set it up to loop on a single frame it also allows you to audition many different possibilities very quickly.

I have a lot of fun taking a 8-bar melody, dicing it up into individual cells, transposing it a couple of times into more cells. Then audition what you created by changing the melody order, adding counterpoint.

This video does a good job showing what I mean, though he's not using the song window at all:

Yes, although it took a little time to locate it!
It's in the pattern composition editor window (click on the pencil icon after selecting pattern) then it's icon is top left.
I'm hoping for midi editing this is going to be a cross between Gadget, Pro midi and Auxy.. with ease of use and functionality combined. But I've only just turned the key and opened the door on this app so far.

  • Can anyone tell me if it's working for them on iOS 7?

It's actually a similar sequencing experience to Gadget, just not quite as slick or intuitive. If you'd rather sequence songs than loops, Genome is a great way to leverage all of your non-Gadget synths and apps and lay down a handcrafted rhythm section into your DAW.

  • Can you play notes on a keyboard and record them into a pattern/loop as others are playing? Or do you have to press on screen and program each individually ?

  • This might just be what I needed to look at all along for external sequencing the electribe2.

There is a built in keyboard so I assume so, though I've not tried that yet

  • I know I'm being a design snob, but I can't believe that for a long awaited v2 launch that they're still using this super dated UI style with its glossy lozenges and winamp-type backgrounds. Functionality is important, and I'm sure this is a big update, but a fresh look would help spur sales and coax old users to reexamine what it can do. All it would take are a few new images to bring it into this decade, but ah well— first world problems, I guess.

  • Thanks people. I have invested from the college fund. Sounds like fun and interesting also. Of course if I'd known about the glossy lozenges..... :) That's definitely going to be my new IRL insult of choice.

At least we don't have to install it from floppies!

  • New Song Mode:

From now on the length of each song cube is the length of the longest pattern within it, not just one bar. This takes some of the hassle out of setting up long songs, and should clear up some confusion over how the song cubes work. You can still pick the old song mode for your existing songs.

Thanks! So much better with the metronome

  • In the online manual for Genome 2.0, the dev recommends "Copperlan's network MIDI manager" (exe for Mac and PC) for a midi (wifi- or lan-) network connection between ipad and Mac/PC. (I had never heard of that utility.) Does anyone use such a connection between iPad and PC (Windows 7) and is it better (more stable, bettter interface) than rtpMIDI?

Interesting, I've never seen that before... worth giving it a whirl. I installed it and the interface looks useful but I can't get my ipad to show up on the network. I'm on windows 7.

rtpmidi works fine for me but this seems to have the option to save complicated setups, if I could get it to see my ipad then all would be good.

    hmm, tempted by this.
still searching for a MIDI sequencer with this sort of performance based approach.
would anyone care to comment on these questions?

Is it possible to undo recordings in the pattern editor without stopping playback / disabling record?

Do the remix pads settings get saved as part of the pattern?

  • @aaronpc not helpful in delozenging the interface, but this could help reduce the winamp symptoms?

Nice try, but no. This winamp theme would have been called "Ice".
