  • What OS are you using? I'm at 8.2 now but still don't see the options to do that. I wonder if it only works on iPhone.

  • MidiBand 3.0 has arrived. Check out its new interface, and the long requested background play feature.

Creation of a style out of mid-file should work on any OS, iPad or iPhone.
You need to open the Add/Change Sections screen with Add buttons (+ buttons in older versions). Start playback of the mid file using the Play button at the bottom, and press Add/+ when you hear a fragment that you like. Do this up to 12 times, and you've got yourself a style with up to 12 sections.
Add/Change Sections screen is accessed from the Settings button ("cogwheels") in the new MidiBand/MidiXpress, from the main app menu / Add/Change Sections in the older versions of MidiBand.

  • Thanks so much for the instructions.
I Just tried for the first time and it worked beautifully!

Are there specific parameters the Midi file should have such as what key for it to be in?

Also do you know what's the max length allowed for each variation, fill, intro, etc?

    Thanks!

Musikman4Christ, thanks so much for the positive review in App Store, and even a nicer update.

The MidiBand autodetects the key, gets it right in 80-90% of cases. For the remaining 10-20%, there is a tuning stepper below the section button. It has "red" positions with half-tone increments, and a special green position where it abandons the tuning, and simpy forces all notes to align with unison, perfect third and perfect fifth of the chord played on the keyboard. This distorts the melody, but eliminates all potential dissonant notes and keeps the rythmical coloring of the song.

The max length is 8 measures (1,2,4 or 8). This has been limited purely for UI reasons, the segmented control looked ugly with more than 4 sections. If there is a good reason to have more, this shouldn't be hard to change in future versions. Keep in mind, though, that key autodetect is performed beat-by-beat, that is, 32 times for 8 measures 4/4. For longer sections there is a good chance that at least one of the 32 autodetected keys will be wrong, and this will mess up the entire section, as the manual tuning described above is done for the section as a whole, not beat-by-beat.

If you REALLY want to get it right, a file with "SFF1" FF06 marker inside is considered a Yamaha style, and all Yamaha styles are assumed to be in key C. So if you take an external editor, transpose all fragments you plan to use as sections to C, and add "SFF1" marker to the beginning of the file, this should get the tuning right in 100% of cases.

Also, did you notice the chord overdubbing feature? If you play a different chord during the SEQUENCER playback, it will replace the chord stored in the sequencer. There is one caveat, though. During the original play if you release a chord the accompaniment still stays in that chord until some other chord is played. During the sequencer playback, a new chord remains in effect only as long as you keep playing it; the moment you release the chord, the accompaniment goes back to the chords recorded in the sequencer. Thus, it most cases you need to be careful to follow through and keep the new chord pressed for all 4 beats of the measure.

Hi @Ksh there is another Midiband thread going where I had posted a question ( http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/8921/midiband-3-0-is-out/p1). I'll repost here in the hopes you get notifications for this thread. Thanks.

I'm still having no success at moving the sliders on the right. The master slider works fine. Wondering if anybody else on ios 7 is experiencing this?

The crashes I'm getting don't actually appear to be from loading Sty files. I've managed to load quite a few in. The crashes happen randomly and it's hard to pinpoint a trigger.

@KSh When trying to convert a midi file to sty file, is there some smart code working behind the scenes as to when you select a part that adheres to tempo, or do you just have to be very precise with the timing when hitting '+' button? Thanks

  • Awesome KSH! Thanks for your tips and creating this amazing app. Many folks here have not upgraded their IOS are there any chances to give MidiBAND IOS7 compatibility?

I'm on 8.2 so mine is working like a dream. But many are having issues.

Again, thanks for chiming in and for being available when possible to help the users here. A bunch of really nice folks that love making music. So many workflows here and some are really curious about this app.

The way I see it is I'm essence its like having a midi Ableton like app. Instead of launching audio clips one launches predefined MIDI clips as intro, verses Variations, fills, endings, breaks, etc... So the footprint is small due to midi.
What's awesome is that one can export the whole recording as a midi file to Cubasis where you can add all your audio tracks, or even precise. Edit the midi tracks and even change or add instruments like the Korg iM1 etc etc. The possibilities are endless!

Gotta go to church so thanks again and hopefully wrinkles get ironed out! I don't mind continuing on this thread if you wish. :-)

    Regards,

  • Hi @Ksh
I have a couple of questions on using Midiband. Any tips on getting Chordpolypad to work with Midiband? Is there a specific channel I need to use. I set Midi out to CPP 's Midi Out , but none of the chord changes seem to be recognized.
Also , I am still a little bit confused on the process for chord entry when using a Midi Controller keyboard .Do I need to play the full chord on my Keyboard or just a one finger chord for Midiband to recognize the input as a full chord. If one finger chord mode does work ,any tips on on how to play a Major 7 chord for example? Any advice from you would be much appreciated.

You can play a 1-finger chord, but this would always be a major chord. A 2-finger chord could be major or minor. A 3-finger chord is a fully defined chord. Finally, a 4-finger chord allows to add 7th chords to the mix.
