  • You can kinda do the unison thing with a combination of the chord function and the voice programmer

Wait, that's brilliant. Looking forward to trying this. I didn't even know it had a chord function!

I just tried this (boss, don't be reading this) and it didn't work the way I was hoping. Can you explain how you do it please? I even tried making the chord an octave and then offsetting the OSC pitch in the VP on every other step to compensate but that didn't quite work as expected either.

  • From the original hardware it was 8 mono-synths stacked giving you polyphony. The plus was that each voice didn't have to sound exactly the same but the downside was that each voice had to be programmed and tuned separately. Since iSEM is digital it can simply go polyphony with ease. I don't have it in front of me at the moment but I seem to remember that it could be switched to polyphony. So...Then you could switch on the 8 voice programmer, detune and such, but my issue is that it's stuck in sequential mode. The sound will always change for every note press. Which is a cool feature in itself but what if you don't want it moving through steps but want all 8 voices to sound same time with whatever tweaks per voice you made?

  • Has anyone successfully changed iSEM's parameters via an iOS sequencer? I've successfully been using StepPolyArp to draw automation in sequences for NLog and Laplace but my method only intermittently (now not at all) works with iSEM.

I press the midi learn button, press on the desired blue knob, then (instead of twirling a hardware knob) I switch to SPA and move a fader in the "hyper edit" window.

This method or something like it has worked with NLog and Laplace. I will try it with my other faves today (no work or family today - huzzah!). Sunrizer, Cassini, FM4, Virsyn stuff, Magellan).

Any thoughts about lack of success with iSEM? I have quickly grown to love this synth and would love to be able to automate its parameters via an iOS sequencer (I have them all!)

I made a quick video to show what I meant.

There are several modes of playing the Voice programmer. By default it is set to 'FWD', I believe the mode you are looking for is 'Reassign', where each key press is assigned to the number in the programmer ie, key 1 = voice 1, key two = voice two, etc. If you release key 2 and play it again, it would still be voice 2.

I retract the former comment I made in this thread regarding the voice programmer not working the way I had expected - it totally does and sounds incredibly lush :)

Smacking brilliant! Thank you. I tried to go down that path with my octave thing but wasnt nearly that clever.

  • @syrupcore
    No problem.

Yes. With Pro Midi and also Tabletops Mastermind. It just works. Check if the relevant Midi connections are on and if you are on the right Midi channel - obvious stuff but I can't think of anything else, iSEM is solid.

  • That's good news @firejan82. Did you use a similar method to the one I outlined above?

  • @markk I think its a similar method for Tabletops Mastermid although I have no idea what the "hyper edit" window is. I don't use SPA a lot.

A different method for apps like Pro Midi and Thesys.

  • Well, did you click on the relevant green knob in iSEM while in mid-learn mode and then switch to ProMidi and move one of the faders in one of the automation lanes under the piano-roll ?(that's what I mean by "hyper edit", sorry).

No. I don't know if this is the best way to do it but to Midi learn from Pro Midi I create a temporary clip playing in loop with only one cc number automated - I make the iSEM knob learn that cc and delete the clip. I repeat this if I want a another knob automated by another cc message. I hope that is clear. If there's a better way please let me know.
