Is SampleMoog in SampleTank any good? (Half off this weekend.)

I don't care for sampletank, but it seems like a convenient way to get those sounds.

  • Hey John jere is a link to my demo for that very pack, and I also noticed it came out way back in Nov 2013

I just tried loading the store in Sampletank and it repeatedly crashes the app, even after resets etc. So much for IK's advertising if I can't even load the store!

Edit - I got it working by deleting and reinstalling - I was quite keen to get the Sonik Synth pack as it is on sale for the first time.

  • I bought the bass pack. Sonik is tempting but I don't use sampletank too much. The bass pack will be useful though because I can use sampletank on my old iPod touch which can't go higher than ios6. I use it as a backup for live work.

  • First... this is an old discussion - IK apps are only 35% off for a limited time.

I use SampleTank and in particular, the Sonik Synth and Miroslav Philharmonik sound packs a LOT. I find that SampleTank doesn't use much system resources and I can build up a lot of diverse tracks in Auria just using this one app. I can work quickly without the frustration of other apps--are you listening, Synthmaster?--and then make them glisten with Fabs.

The packs are $20 each, but I bought them half price when IK went half off for apps and in-apps in December.

I've always been curious about their SampleMoog Mobile Edition. But why would I buy it when I have both Model 15 and Viking?

Well there is a lot more to the history of Moog than the sounds you can get on those two synths. This package includes over 130 instruments, including the Minimoog Model D, Memorymoog, Polymoog, Taurus, Source, Rogue, Prodigy, Vocoder, Minimoog Voyager, Little Phatty and Etherwave Theremin. And when I watched videos of the full package that they came from I got very curious.

Anyway, it is currently $12.99 so I decided to get it. And I LOVE IT. I'm going to be using it often. I know this makes me a terrible person. I should be learning how to be a Ciani-style cable whiz in Model 15, but I know this will never happen.

As many of you could have picked up the full SampleTank for free recently, you can get all the other soundpacks for $25 now, which I don't know if that's the regular price, but I think it's an amazing deal. $25 is a very fair price for just the high quality Miroslav orchestral sounds. IMHO

If you are curious about what's in this, you can check it out here:

  • it's certainly a safe bet to use a sampled Moog - instant reward by a sound that hardly ever fails
but with a risk to slip into cliche... too many lucky men or tarkuses ;)
and something special of the ad hoc modulation may get lost... (just to consider, no reproach)

    cheers, Tom

  • If you have Animoog you can get the Monster Moog IAP with 167 timbres/48 presets. It includes stuff from Model 15, Minitaur, Sub Phatty, 904a and more. Get some classic sounds and the ability to make your own sounds with these building blocks.

  • I didn't here a single sample of anything worth a fricken fuck in sampletank. Maybe its just me.

  • @MrNezumi Thank you. I haven't explored the in-app purchases on animoog enough so I appreciate you pointing me in that direction.

I think if I had put the money towards the ones you mentioned and some others, it would have been a better choice than SampleTank. But I'm still happy I did, as there are advantages to both. I will do a little of both. :)

I totally forgot about that pack... which I already own!

  • I did a demo video of the whole pack when it came out, this may help you decide

  • Some decent sounds. My Sampletank is complete except for the extra drums.

I'm with those here though that find using the two Moog apps to be more fun to make your own sounds with. Sampletank is OK, but limited in the same way of all simple sample playback software - lack of ability to modulate parameters on the fly.

One way of adding to the use of Sampletank though, is to send it through some fx that are midi modulated by other apps and controlled by your choice of controller.

not to forget that a smooth emulation of a Moog takes a lot of CPU cycles
(which may not be available in multitracking projects)

    cheers, Tom
