iCM4+ firmware update - PSA.
Hi folks,
If you update to the latest iCM4+ firmware - which has changed the names of the ports to be compatible terminology-wise with the iCA4+ - please note that it will change your existing port assignments and rename ports to the new defaults (if you had named them in the iConfig software as I do). Essentially it's a new set of factory defaults.
I suggest you take screenshots of your existing iConfig and DAW setups before doing the firmware update so that you can reset them to what you had before easily.
Comments
if you have an iCM4+ you will need to take precautions on your Mac/PC before updating the firmware.
The device names as seen by your OS will change, which will mean the device names in your DAW will change. If you have existing connections with templates, they will need to be reconfigured also.
So, instead for example of seeing:
iConnectMIDI4+ USB 3.1
iConnectMIDI4+ USB 3.2
iConnectMIDI4+ USB 3.3
etc.
in your MIDI device dropdown list
you will now see the new defaults:
iConnectMIDI4+ DIN1
iConnectMIDI4+ DIN2
iConnectMIDI4+ DIN3
etc.
If you have connected something other than DIN1 to USB 3.1 then you may end up being bewildered for a moment...
You can change this. In iConfig, you can set the names of the ports in the MIDI info page as I show in the official iCM4+ tutorials (although those are now out-of-date with respect to the new naming scheme, the principle still applies).
However, to get your Mac (I haven't tried it on a PC) to see the changed names (and not still report DIN1, DIN2 etc.) you will need to unplug your iCM4+ and remove any reference to it from the Audio/MIDI MIDI setup Window under settings.
When you plug it back in, the new names will be reflected in your device port naming in your Audio/MIDI setup and in your DAW
For example, I have 3.1 routed to iPad 1 port 1 on USB Device port 1 and 3.2 router to iPad 2 port 1 on USB Device port 2 normally.
This new naming scheme by default would show DIN1, DIN2, etc. That's not right for me. YMMV of course - however you have set it up.
For me now, the list shows:
iConnectMIDI4+ iPad1
iConnectMIDI4+ iPad2
iConnectMIDI4+ DIN iPad
iConnectMIDI4+ DIN MS2000
iConnectMIDI4+ DIN MicroKorg
iConnectMIDI4+ DIN Roland R8
iConnectMIDI4+ MS20ic
iConnectMIDI4+ MicroBrute
iConnectMIDI4+ DIN Xkey25
iConnectMIDI4+ HST4
iConnectMIDI4+ HST5
etc. because I renamed them
Of course, I also made sure the routing was correct in the Port routing window bidirectionally as well.
(DIN iPad there is because I have another iPad connected via an iRig MIDI to DIN port 1 on the front).
After removing from the Audio/MIDI setup, those are also reflected that way in my DAW as well.
Here's a very quick video showing how I have it set up now so you can see how it maps to the above.

Cool. Thanks for the tips. What's in the release notes out of curiosity?
Haven't checked. Just did it automatically. :-) Then realized I needed to reset everything. Wanted to give folks a Heads-up so you could save snaps of your existing setups before doing the same thing.
At the very least, the device naming and port assignments have changed. Hence this ^^^^^
Very kind of you to put this information out there. Whether you did it due to your inner make-your-mother-proud generosity or because iConnectivity asked you to, they're both epic wins and the sort of thing I wish the world was full of. I don't even own one!
It hit me in my studio setup immediately I did it and I thought it would be useful feedback @syrupcore (not because iC asked :-) )
What a bummer I didn't read your post before. My screenshots are to old, so I really fiddle around now. But biggest problem for me now is, that I only get one device showing up in the OSX Audio Midi Setup. The ICM4+ is connected to my Mac through USB Device Jack 2+3. And as I can see on my old screenshots, both show up in the Audio Midi Setup. But now whatever I do, only one is showing up. Really a mess :-(
P.S.
Audio through seems also to be broken. Cannot get any sound routed anymore :-(( never touch a running system..
Hmmm @helmutmaria - so - you were doubling up the ports by connecting twice? Wondering if you could connect once, rename all the ports in iConfig for one of the device ports and then try connecting both. Just thinking out loud - not sure I understand what you were doing but if that's it it might be worth a shot.
@Musicinclusive, problem is also, to long ago I was deeper into it. Did not use it for a while now, because all the configuring been to complicated. Aggregate device on OSX is really a p.i.t.a.. Everything has to be renamed. Also in Cubase I have to rename everything when changing the audio or midi settings to reflect it correctly. Thats why I am thinking of buying the new Audio 4+. Looks this is reflecting more my needs. But haven´t checked that out in detail for now. Just want to route some audio from my synths on the ipad to Cubase, not more. Attached the config I am talking about, I cannot get to work anymore.

@helmutmaria - I'll try and offer more help if I can. I haven't found any issue aggregating under MacOS X - but then I never tried connecting it twice. However, that being said, you should be able in theory to connect multiple iCM4+'s in any case - which is similar. I have both a iCM2+ and a 4+ connected and aggregated and didn't do anything special.
@MusicInclusive, thanks for your offer to help, very appreciated. Already tried a lot. Resetting, deleting audio prefs, deleting devices a.s.o.. But in fact I did not change anything with my cable set up. So its a mystery. Maybe I did some routing or configuring I just cannot remember to get this up. But anyways, will for now just try to get it back working for audio with this one device showing up. Maybe its a hardware failure. Midi is fine. In the Audio Midi setup, both connections are shown, like before with audio.
Audio working again. Not the old config, but working ;-) Anyways it looks like for me, that the firmware changed something in the routing abilities. Its like the priority of what is routed has changed.
