The Impossible Music of Black MIDI
I saw there wasn't a thread on this phenomenon, so thought I'd post it for those not familiar.
They are strangely compelling when they are at their most intense patterns of colour and sound.
Some songs are over a terrabyte of data!

Here's a kind of youtube dummies guide or primer:
To play some of these files would be a good test for an ipad

Eight tracks, on the same channel, at over 900bpm in Different Drummer is the closest way I can think to get close.
Here's an example...
OH, the polyphony!
Let me just say that I like the piano roll in the correct orientation, and why the hell are all the DAW's rolls in the wrong orientation?
A lot of things in life go in the incorrect direction. Wall calendars, for example. The future plummets into the ground, leaving the past above and visible. This is why people are suddenly surprised when something important that they put on a calendar appears out of nowhere.
That's a new one on me! What will these crazy kids come up with next?
@Carbot Thanks for the introduction.
@funjunkie That shit is intense! What model of iPad did you use?
I find these cultural memes which evolve very interesting, sort of illustrates the human desire to create, destroy and try things out....
Epic! with a great finish too... @funjunkie27
Thanks guys.
I don't recall which iPad I used, but it was either an iPad4 or the mini retina. I ran DD through Swoopster in AB.
Love this stuff! And that's a great idea @funjunkie27 using Different Drummer to generate the madness. I really must revisit DD to push what I thought it could do.
Thanks @Jocphone. That was due to an update to DD late last year where the Dev bumped the tempo range from ~200bpm to >900bpm.
Great thread. I learnt something new today. Not entirely sure how to apply my knowledge of Black Midi though
Should of had a warning for epilepsy, altho the one part on the vid, when everything started playing at the same time, actually sounded quite good, but reminded me of those machines with all the lights, that always steal my money, as I can never match the fruit.
If you read my music theory at http://www.holistictonality.org then this meme fits it perfectly. The theory is in a nutshell when you play so fast it becomes slow then you are composing sound in a new way. Then it works backward to say that all music is already just sound on a different time scale so it's really the same. However, composers of the future will comfortably compose between the different musical levels creating a seamless musical expression rather than just showing what a computer can do or creating cacophony which is pretty easy. I made software in the 90s called HyperChord which was to explore this theory. Here's a tame instance: You can get some cool bass rumbles from this technique too. I have some pretty catastrophic recordings on cassette I need to transfer.

Line for something or other here...
