Anyone here using the Novation Launchkey (or Roland A800Pro)?
I have the Impulse 61, it's big brother, but the keys are f'in horrible on that one. The dampening is almost non-existent, making every other key stroke go CLACK!, hitting that big hollow plastic cover. Anyways, so it's either moving up a lot in price range, or move down and get a keyboard with regular synth-y keys and prolly a cheaper feel.
My Q is though, how is the velocity sensitivity on the Launchkey? I need a keyboard to can go above 115 without having to slam the keys, and still be able to do lower velocity parts without every other key vel. jumping up and down. Hope that made sense...Oh btw, read there were issues with windows 8.1 (not 8), are they ironed out?

I have the 49.
I found most velocity issues could be calibrated and adjusted with the controls of each of app. Also-depended on how many things I had running at the time.
It is still far more sensitive than my VST's on my PC - so I am satisfied. Plus-the pads line up so good with most app settings and lay outs it is so convenient.
The exception being Gadget. Horrible velocity sensitivity.
I am sure things like this will improve the further along the technology grows in the IOS music field.
That's just me though. I could be wrong. Maybe if would be worth taking it back and getting another to try.
Hope that at least gave something to compare against.
Yea I'll be using mainly with VSTs. And it needs to be able to do somewhat dynamic playing, going from low velocity playing to high in a somewhat smooth velocity curve.
I love my Launchkey.
I have had others and come back to it for IOS and PC music production.
The keys are quiet, no clacking. However, I have had issues with the velocity. In fact, in my long life the only service call I've ever made was to Sweetwater to ask if there was an issue with velocity. The symptoms are, the 61 I have works great with most apps, but a surprising number seem to have volume issues; some keys are loud and some don't sound at all when hit with the same velocity. After awhile I realized that even within the same app some presets worked great, others had the issue. I just tried it on the two VSTs I have; Cameleon 5000 and SynthMaster Player. The 5000 works on some presets and struggles with others, the SynthMaster Player works like a dream.
Bear in mind I am not a good keyboard player. I bought it mainly to control the Launchpad app and then for the keyboard because I needed a new one. The only other synth-style keyboards I have used are my old and beloved X-Station and my ancient M1. The Launchpad's keys are equal to those, in my opinion. Despite the velocity issue, I'm happy with my purchase.
When playing those VSTs, your DAW should give a readout for the midi velocity on the channel it is receiving the Launchkey on. So it shouldn't be affected by what preset that is currently loaded in the VSTi (I'm guessing Cameleon might just have a bunch of preset with very low sound, and/or a low midi velocity value on some presets, same might apply iOS synth presets).
That's what I assumed as well. For "friendly" presets and VSTs the keyboard works very well for the cost. Let us know what you think if you go ahead with it.
I went ahead and got a Roland A-800 Pro. Same price class as the Impulse 61. I figured I'm gonna need the after touch, and adjustable velocity curves. It has that god awful Roland spring back pitch/mod stick, but the mod wheel can always be programmed to a slider or knob. Or maybe I'll just open up the thing and remove the spring. In this price class it seems it's the one with the best synth action keys, comparable with something like Fatar, and with all the thing like AT etc. It should arrive in May. Anyone got the A800 and can give some impressions?
From my research, the Roland is the most ideal cheap controler, but for what the 3 octave model costs(for example), I'm now looking at playing it safe with the Novation Bass Station 2. One less octave, but better keybed, and an admiral analog synth to boot.
Yea, I need 61 keys. Im just used to that. And it's also a lot due to key triggers/switches in Kontakt libs and such.
