Sci-Fi Track - The Bar at the Edge of Space

Track 4 from my Sci-Fi concept album, a work in progress. Rough mix (lyrics written, vocals TBD). All comments welcome :)

Apps used: Gadget (drums and synths), M3000, Scratch Disc (horns), Jamup Pro (guitar and bass), Stereo Designer, Audiobus, Auria.

My hearty thanks to everyone who took the time to listen and comment on previous tracks. As a relative novice to mixing, and composing in a new (for me) genre, I truly value the feedback I've received. Quick shout to the following fine folks I didn't get a chance to thank properly in last week's thread: @MrNezumi, @TozBourne, @Flo26 - your encouraging comments were very much appreciated!

As for this track, Steely Dan and Black Sabbath walk into a bar to meet Rosemary Clooney ...

  • Kinda hear a bit of Neal Schon and Toto in this piece, quite a progy 7/8 & 9/8 rhythm (I think) and riff. Another cool track. My only critique would be to tidy up the bass and drums to really lock into the groove and to hear the bass end. Still it's cool, progressive with a hint of disco and power pop.

Thank you - I've loved Toto IV since it came out, and Neal Schon is one of my favorite guitarists. I think a lot of the synth maestros here would enjoy his albums with Jan Hammer. The bass on this track has been a love/hate affair for me. Glad to hear it's not just me hearing it. May just re-record and start fresh. Appreciate the feedback :)

Wow - really impressive. Reminds me a bit on some Jazz-Tracks, I've heard. A little busy for my taste but I think it is intended this way.

  • I'm hearing "Looking Through God's Eye" right now - very cool track! Love this type of guitar-sound in songs from "Monster Magnet".

Thanks for checking it out - definitely trying to sneak in a bit of 40s lounge in there ;) I'm curious if you think the whole track seems busy or a specific part? I know my taste in drum rhythm leans more toward the Keith Moon end of the spectrum ...

Thanks, a little bit of Saturn in Auria goes a looong way :)

That's a great track man, variation on the drums is fun, crystalline in there on the synths?

Thank you! I like "lively" drums, but no crystals were harmed in the making of this tune. A hefty dose of convolution reverb in Auria coupled with Stereo Designer for the big synth drop, though.

Edit: what did you use for drums

Gadget - London. I appreciate the feedback :)

  • All kinds of things going on here. More than Steely, I hear Mister Zappa.

Saturn ++ (and after all, it's appropriately named for this project...)

  • I really like the drums - nice variations. The instrumental setup seems somewhat anxious (hope that's the right word) to me, but very well done, without a doubt. So that "agitation" seems to be an intentional element of the song - it's only that this impression came to my mind, when I listened to it. I've heard this "debating" between instruments often in modern jazz.
So - I fear, I'm more the "stupid groove" type, which burns into my head, hypnotically repeating the same phrase. In acoustic music, I would mention Otis Taylor for example.

I would like to add, that what I've tried to describe above isn't analytical or educated in any regard, but only summarizes the emotions, I had while listening to it.

  • I don't know how you kept such a complex arrangement so tight. I showed my 16 year old son these tracks and he would like a copy of the final album release, as would I.

And how the heck are you pumping these out so fast without compromising on complexity...

  • @eustressor -- jolly good track! Great concept, looking forward to more...

All the better, I could roll with Neal Schon and Toto walk into a bar to meet Frank Zappa.

Am I that transparent? LOL, thank you as always for sharing your insights :)

I really appreciate you taking the time to dig down and share your listening experience with me. That's why I'm posting these tracks. Without emotion, music would be stripped to nothing but math + pitch = song. I definitely stuff a lot of notes in my bars more often than not - holdovers from my heavy metal/pseudo Prog background. I like to think I've put a fair amount of thought into each part and how the many voices will interweave within the song, but it's good to be reminded that kind of business isn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea.

Then again, I could fare a lot worse than suffering comparisons to jazz and/or Otis Taylor ;) Thank you again for generously lending your ears and thoughts.

Wow. Thank you. This must be what it feels like to get your first two donors on Kickstarter!

Thank you Toz! Next week, Track 5 will be a bit different, a sort of instrumental tribute to Tangerine Dream with zero fuzzy guitar riffs ...

  • Kick ass tones from all that stuff. Killer guitar riffage, sir. Very cool.

  • Now there's a great track

  • Hey, thank you for the listen and the feedback, @supanorton :)
