synth-Q 1.03 feature update — beta testers needed!

Hi everyone,

I develop synth-Q, and I'm starting work on the next update to add new features that have been suggested so far. I am going to be focusing on reworking the preset system as I think it needs the most attention (if you have any presets that you made that you would like to see in the next version, post them here!).

I'm looking for some feedback on what should be added next. Also, if you are interested in becoming a beta tester and seeing these new features before anyone else, please send me a message!

Comments

  • Preset systems seem like the exact sort of thing where there should be one obj-c library to rule them all. Pains me to think of all of the synth features not yet actualized in the world because every dev has to spend time coding a preset system!

  • I agree. It definitely would be nice. The preset system in SQ as it stands is pretty basic— the one thing that I personally find is lacking is a quick and easy way to access certain sounds via some sort of tagging system. I've also thought of making a section for "recipes" for quick reusable settings that only affect smaller parts of the synth— so for example if you want to quickly add an LFO wobble on the filter cutoff there would be a recipe for that.

I also would like to implement better sharing for presets using social media. It would be nice to have access to community sounds at any time via Dropbox or something similar.

  • I'll buy it tonight and get back to you.

Tagging and sharing sound great and are exactly the sort of baseline features a library should support! So that you have more time to:

Because, yes please. That would be wonderful. Been using iSEM a lot lately and dearly wish each screen in the synth allowed you to load presets (say, voice programmer or mod matrix). Same for the NanoStudio Mod Matrix.

I know it is not a "modular" synth;-)
One thing that would be nice, as you remove modules, hear the results?

Unless I miss something; with a preset you can delete all modules and sound stays the same??

If you add modules, you can hear difference...Would be nice if it worked in reverse too.

How do you "go back" in chain of modules, you like the sound from module A to G, but H you don't want...and you want to go back to C...Is it possible?

    Otherwise, great synth...

Another thing, could the modules be somewhat folded (width-wise) so they all fit on screen and by clicking them they open?
    This could be an "option"

  • @soundklinik when you drag a module up you are not removing it, you are just getting it out of the way, and you can always bring it back in from the same place you did initially. If you want to remove it from the signal path you press and hold on the module to turn it off. Great app.

  • @soundklinik A lot of people are confused by exactly what is "modular" about synth-Q — As @firejan82 mentioned the arrangement of modules doesn't actually affect the sound. It's just more or less for your convenience if you have a preset that uses some modules that other presets don't. The controls can be rearranged for easy access, but in terms of being "modular" you can only change the sound by hooking up modules within the 8 mod bays.

Synth-Q is really just a subtractive synthesizer that lets you have up to 8 modulations. If you know Logic Pro's ES2 synth, the design is very similar in that respect.

I really need to get some basic tutorial videos out soon to clear up the confusion!

    Also

I'm not sure if this is what you mean but I did start working on an undo/redo feature for the next update.

This was in the original design but I didn't have time to put it in. I'll think about this one again.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone!
