That's a wonderful overview. I'm impressed that you learned so much about the app so quickly.

    A couple notes:

    1) For instruments like the uke and kalimba (and the gameboy melodic hits), the note usually lasts much longer than the active hit, so you can indeed play with the note values following the hits (not just on the active steps). You can hear this very clearly on the gameboy/808 sample song on Soundcloud. A single hit and then a lot of note manipulation following it is very pleasing. This works for toms and bass drums as well.

    2) I suggest soloing an instrument when applying drag-n-drop FX. Some FX work better on some sounds than other sounds.

    3) I see a few things we need to explain better in the manual!

Thanks so much for putting so much effort in. I'm delighted to see someone having so much fun in the app!

  • Great video Doug....oooh tempting...

  • excellent intro, Doug!

  • For me getting this app would be a no brainer, seriously, for the price, no IAP'S, Audiobus, come on

A no-brainer if I hadn't just bought an Air 2, Auria, FLUX FX, Borderlands, Thesys in the last 2 weeks...but still a very nice app, looks better than the drum apps I have already. We'll see how my resistance fares after a few glasses later...just don't tell the mrs...

  • Is it fair to say perhaps the closest comparison to this app is DM-1? I have DM-1, DrumJam, and just recently Elastic Drums. If I had known this was coming I probably wouldn't have purchased Elastic Drums even though it's quite good, has an iPhone version, and is eventually going to get MIDI out (I think?).

But this one, like DM-1, has a wider range of sounds, including acoustic, but it appears to do so many more things compared to DM-1 and is going to have MIDI capabilities in the future. DM-1's MIDI capabilities are just so unreliable and I just don't get the impression that they are in a rush to fix them.

Aside from that Diode-108 looks like It has the potential to be so much more than just a drum machine. Once it gets decent MIDI capabilities it looks like it could be a halfway decent MIDI sequencer.

Doug's excellent video is convincing enough by itself but it would be interesting to hear from somebody that has both of these (DM-1 and Diode-108) and if they think there are still reasons to keep DM-1 around?

  • I am definitely going to buy Waldorf Attack next month or so. Until now, no drum machines is perfect enough.

  • Great one, Doug. Thanks very much for putting it together.

  • I agree. I think it's a great addition, but I've hoisted myself up on the petard of being a pain in the arse as regards the C/P etc. and having made my spike I shall sit on it. Interesting that DM1 updated today (haven't checked it out yet...)

C/P and various sorts of MIDI support seem to be the top workflow issues most stridently requested. (But we have a huge spreadsheet of other feedback on our radar as well.)

Would love to know what people don't like about DM-1's MIDI. What is the problem there? Feel free to drop an email through our support box if anyone wants to go on at length regarding MIDI details.

It doesn't work. :) Basically, it says clock sync on the tin but it doesn't actually sync or start/stop. Here's the workaround that works...usually. http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/1564/how-to-get-midi-sync-working-with-dm1/
