How to improve Pro Midi.

Pro Midi has the nicest piano roll in iOS. It also uses less CPU than Cubasis (don't have conclusive evidence, just a hunch) meaning more synth/effects.

I would love to see this app improve. Here's what's I think is currently wrong with it.

  • Cannot hear what you're playing when using external keyboard.

  • Controls for stop/start and metronome are on a different page to the on-screen keyboard.

  • Cannot start a new project by copying an old project (no file duplicate).

  • Cannot copy a selection of notes from one clip to another.

I don't really get the purpose of (what I call) the meta play button. I'm guessing it's Pro Midi trying to be more like Live or Gadget or something. If someone could explain how it's supposed to make sequencing easier, be my guest.

  • On your last bullet..long press and select copy, then paste to whatever clip desired. I'm not clear on where the meta play function is, so I'd appreciate clarification on that.

  • I'm having virtual MIDI issues, not recording from MIDIMorphosis. Not isolated the culprit yet, but one of them seems to have a broken port. Will continue to investigate ...

  • @funjunkie27

Yeah that's copying a whole clip to another clip. I'd like to be able to copy a selection of notes/controller data.

  • @dwarman

I'm also having some virtual midi weirdness which, being intermittent, is hard to pinpoint atm.

"Meta play". This app has two play buttons. The one I call meta is on the main page (clip view? ) and is useless to me . I don't know what it's for except to complicate what I try to do with Midi Pro.

  • Dear dev, please could you allow us to select a key as well as a scale to lock the piano roll to...

Do you mean the main play controls on the top control bar? I do find the different play controls useful although sometimes confusing.

Yes it definitely needs basic cut, copy and paste controls of a selection of notes, not just duplicate.

Dear Dev, please add a Gadget like song mode, eg able to set number of repeats for each scene (row) before moving to next row. I guess the song controls could be down bottom right where the record controls are. Song arrangement with lettered Parts would another great feature to add to this.

I've been getting midi weirdness with this app too recently, but I'm not sure if it's Pro midis fault or not or ios 8.3, losing connection to apps like Seakbeats and Drumjam.
Also when playing with IAA apps after a while I get a glitch and the sound of all apps cut out. sometimes a restart of each app helps sometimes not....I hope this is a Pro midi bug which can be fixed....

    +1

This controls are very confusing, and I still don't understand what is their real interest and function.

  • I have found Seekbeats midi in to be extremely flakey unfortunately. IPad Air and iPhone 6. iOS 7 and 8. I've emailed the dev and he's getting on it.

If you send it too many notes it's midi port crashes.

  • Agreed...the project play baffles me.

I'm also unclear on the sound recorder section at the bottom right of the project screen. Is anyone using that! How is there any sound to record other than from the external apps you're controlling?

    Beats me.

  • i'd say, devs should start answering emails first!

@funjunkie27 @markk I just tried the Sound Recorder and it seems to create separate audio recordings for each midi part using IAA (like exporting stems).

  • I get message "You must connect at least one instrument to the channel" even though I've got NLog in there.

  • Ok, I didn't actually have NLog in the IAA slot, just in the "midi to " window.

Pity you can' t play the recorded audio within Pro Midi.

    Thanks for the tip @Vecoto.

  • it's nice to collect these ideas and feedback on improving Pro Midi, but it would be great to see an appearance of @Wiksnet here

  • Thanks @Vecoto and @markk. I'll have to give this a try after work.
