Free MidiDesigner Korg Gadget Templates - First up: Helsinki

Here's the first version of my project to create Midi Designer layouts to control all the cc parameters in all the Korg gadgets.

v1.0 is a layout for all the parameters in Helsinki.

Notes:

  • Great used on a second iPad (iPad Mini is a great size for 4 or 5 finger control) with the Apollo midi over bluetooth app allowing midi to flow between the two ipads

  • Also good once you have a sequence of notes going (or looping) in Gadget. Hit record then flip to MidiDesigner to modulate.

  • Careful with the Damper... although it allows you to have an uninterrupted note or chord playing as a pad, modulated as you wish, over an infinite number of bars (which I just discovered). Just switch it off when you want the note to finish!

  • I've tried to use X-Y pads where it makes sense to pair parameters. And place them so you can use 2 or even 3 X-Y pads at the same time. Feedback welcome...

  • For this "Pro" version i'll just be adding more pages for each Gadget as I produce them

  • I'll create a single page max 12 controls version for MidiDesigner12 users where I can get away with it. For Helsinki I can get it to 12 controls by losing the ADSR controls (which I guess you'd be less likely to want to modulate once set). Coming shortly.

  • I'll think about whether an iPhone version could work...

  • If you want to say thanks just follow me at: https://soundcloud.com/matt-fletcher-2000 :)

(Thanks to @solador78 for his great Gadget midi implementation chart which makes the whole thing a lot easier!)

EDIT: Easiest way to install is just to email the file to yourself and open in. Or open in from dropbox. Or drop in via iTunes sharing.

Comments

  • OK, here's the MidiDesigner12 version.

Would be great if someone could test this one works.

  • Thanks Matt, this is great...have followed you on SC (love your Impaktor jam on there, really nice). I haven't much of a clue with midi, think I bought midi designer pro while optimistically drunk. However, I did just manage to manipulate Helsinki in a kind of clumsy fashion using your brilliant template, so thanks!
Just a note for those like me who struggle with this stuff. If you want Gadget to play in the background while you try this, make sure to open it in audiobus and use another app in the output slot to stop/start it. Otherwise, the sound disappears whenever you switch apps (unless there's a background audio button in Gadget I've missed?).
Oh, and easiest download route for me was to save the zip file in goodreader, unzip it there, then it gives you the option to "open in" midi designer.

    Thanks @iansainsbury

There is a background audio switch for Gadget in the iOS settings menu for Gadget (not in Gadget itself).

However, I would add that in iOS8.3 I've found that MidiDesigner reloads every time you switch to it and that interupts Gadget's sound. Bit annoying. I think it's an ios8 audio thing. Putting Gadget in audiobus may or may not help this.

  • Thanks Matt. I had fun opening both of your templates on my ipad. I've attached my Berlin template for iphone 5, in case anybody wants it. Probably works ok with some of the other synths too. I abandoned it after experiencing the same disconnection problem in ios 7.

  • Thanks @solador - i'll have a try with your Berlin one.

Here's the iphone version of my Helsinki one (i've left out ADSR for iphone). So Helsinki is now available for MD (above) MD12(above) and MD(both versions) attached here...

To use with an iphone and Gadget over bluetooth you just need the free Apollo app here:
    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/apollo-midi-over-bluetooth/id733258803?mt=12

    Latency isn't noticeable IMO.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 @solador78 good sharing fire men....

@iansainsbury thanks for the midiot notes, Lawd do I need em.

  • Hey guys great work is it possible you can share the gadget midi chart you mentioned at top of page??

    Thank you

It's on the 3rd and 7th posts of this thread:

There is no implementation for transport controls though. Doesn't exist. Gadget doesn't allow midi control of its transport.

What other MIDI designer templates for Gadget have you released thus far?

  • Hi guys, exciting to see this discussion of MD and Gadget spanning all the way back to 2015. I'm not clear on who is authoring here, but I'd love to get this stuff on the MD forums. If anybody's interested, I'm here to help. ... Obviously the Audiobus forums have way more eyeballs, but Google brings interested people to us, too.

No matter what, enjoy and rock on!

    Thanks for digging MD!
