Thanks for the info. Yes I agree that they seems to keep things cripples because they want you to buty their hardware. Any experience with the hardware Maschine? Their first version sells quite cheap second hand as well as the mikro version.

Actually i do have a bit of experience with maschine mk1. My best friend has had one for quite many years and he does most of the stuff on it(and i have done some stuff with him and his maschine). I think for the price that they go, its a really nice controller, actually a real steal, but i would advice on getting some keyboard with it. It has midi ports, so you can hook anything with midi ports straight into it(so get at least some cheapo oldie midi keys or synth with midi out for it, you can find some for like 20-30€ used if you dont care to put a lot of money on it). I have some vague memory that you cant use regular usb midi keyboards with the program(and that the keyboard needs to be hooked directly to maschine hardware via midi port), or maybe it was just quite a hassle to do it, im not 100% sure, so check it out elsewhere.

Also one really neat thing about NI controllers is their controller editor program. Basically there are two modes to the controllers, regular maschine mode and midi mode. With the controller editor program you can basically assign any midi note, cc, program change, poly pressure, channel pressure or mcu. I have traktor kontrol f1 controller that uses the same editor program and i can route it to my ipad(needs to be routed through computer tho, i use midipipe for routing it straight out of audio interfaces midi ports without having to do it via any daw).

Just keep in mind that the maschine program isnt a full blown daw like ableton etc, but a groove box program more similar to having an mpc on your computer. But you can use it as a vst/au inside daws. Also since you can get it to midi mode in a sec, you can assign the midi mode stuff to your daw(like ableton, or just route to ipad) and have the maschine program on the background and switch between regular maschine mode to control that, and midi mode to control your daw/ipad.

I dont know everything about the thing, but if you have some questions, i might be able to answer some.

Ps. i would take maschine mk1 over maschine micro any day.

I've got a Maschine Mikro, it's a lovely bit of kit. I'd say the software is not that far away from a full blown DAW, and I pretty much abandoned Ableton after getting it, particularly after using it as a plugin with Logic.

Interesting what you say about the controller though - I tried hooking mine up to the ipad but the iPad didn't recognise it as a MIDI controller. Maybe the Mikro is different, but if it was possible to use it as a hardware controller for the iPad I'd be over the moon - it's such a well-built controller it'd be great for live use on the road.

If you have any tips for configuring it for the iPad I'd be grateful to know how to do it :)

Well i dont really agree that its even close to a real daw. It can be enough for some stuff, and not everyone needs a daw with it(especially if you are doing some boom bap instrumentals or something like that which doesent require much automation or have too complex structures etc). Basically if you can work with an mpc alone, you can work with maschine alone easily. There are some stuff that is beyond the old school hardware mpcs, but not all that much. My friend basically only uses a daw with it to put the loops(made in maschine) together and recording vocals, its pretty handy to use the vst for this because you can just drag&drop audio loops or just the midi to your daw from the maschine vst.

I did mentioned that it needs to be routed through computer. You cant hook it straight to ipad. You basically need to put it on midi mode and then route the midi out of your computer to your ipad. You can do the routing in a daw(not sure if possible straight from maschine program as well), or by using some midi router program like midipipe.

  • IMPC is great for what it does and has been for a good year, for those of us with modern mpcs it's a great companion and sketch pad. Any updates fixing issues is a good thing imo!

Reasonably said. But an Instagram dance to announce a bug fix? This suggests that BM3 is coming soon and iMPC is sweating.

I did find this oddly disappointing. Of course, I opened up the updated version last night and while resizing a note in the timeline crashed out to the desktop within the first few minutes, which produced the kind of muted sigh that a man will make when sitting all alone and feeling familiarly crushed by something. It has to be said I then worked for another hour with no problems. I do love the song mode on this thing...

Even dancing girl gif's and a fixed bug couldn't persuade me to summon up the energy to reinstall it, and give it another go, like I have so many times before.

    A definite 'meh'.

I love so much about it. But I must confess to be confused by the organization, starting even from the "clever" floppy disk launch screen. I have no idea what they represent. And from there: What's the difference between a sequence, a track, and a program? And once I've accidentally recorded Turbo Duck or note repeat onto my ... track? sequence? How do I get it removed?

But for sample slicing? For taking an amen break or a line of dialogue from a movie and distributing it quickly over 8 or 16 pads? Unbeatable.

I hate to break it to you, mate, but she's not dancing. She's trying to uninstall the app using the Etch-A-Sketch method.

  • Has anyone tried the latest update? I'm currently at work. This use to be one of my favourite apps but it kept crashing at the worst times, amongst other things. I don't think they should have announced just bug fixes but I hope they are putting more energy/effort into the app.

Yea the update didnt fix the crashes.. I think it took a bit longer for it to crash than usual(or maybe i was just lucky this time) and instead of randomly crashing, it now crashed when i pushed play.

Was nice to lose all work for a change with this app..

@ToMess what type of Ipad are you using and what version of IOS are you running? I'm curious because it seems some are experiencing random crashes while others are reporting stability. Maybe it involves crashes while performing certain functions or file operations.

I'm running IOS 10.2, Ipad Pro 9.7. An example of my workflow from a couple of days ago involved creating a simple 4 bar pattern using a user-created drum kit, selecting a new track, going into Program mode, selecting New Sound, choosing Inter App(Audio), selecting Beat Time, Rec Arm, launch BeatTime, choosing a video from my library and playing it, chopping up the audio to create a kit, saving the kit then recording patterns using the various kits. Rock solid operation during each function.

Just for kicks I went in and moved some notes around the timeline with a sequence playing, no crashes, no glitches at all.

I haven't tried any really big projects yet but for simple, MPC-like tasks I haven't had any problems. It sure beats the hell out of the MPC 500 I had been using:)

12.9/latest. Had a hard crash resizing a note in the timeline, otherwise steady.

  • for me sampling animoog via iaa is a non-starter as usual but regular sample stuff is no problem.

Using air 2 and on ios 9.3.5. Todays crash was caused by putting a chopped sample(imported from aum via audiocopy and chopped on impc) on timeline and pushing play. Havent opened it after that.

Lol. I used it in the past for full songs but I grew tired of reopening it. This is a shame because I absolutely love the workflow of it. I don't even care if they add new features. If they fixed the existing app I would be a happy camper :D. Just got home and I'm going to give it a spin again.

I thought Audiocopy may have been the culprit so I imported a long sample from AUM into Audiocopy, chopped it in iMPC Pro, played some notes onto the timeline, played back with no problems.

  • Apparently the crash i had was most likely caused by impc pro only being able to deal with 16bit 44.1khz samples
