Audiobummed

So I just got my trusty old USB audio interface from a friend who had it on extended loan. It's an Art Pre II USB interface with dual TRS 1/8" / XLR combo jacks, headphone monitoring, TRS stereo out, phantom power, etc. It can be powered by USB bus, 9V battery or AC adapter. Couldn't wait to try it with my iPad + guitar + audiobus.

When I first hooked it up (using the refurbished Lightning USB CCK I got today) everything seemed to work great. Jamup found the interface, sounded good, I was stoked! Fired up audiobus, added Magellan as an effect (its effect bay is great), played around for a couple minutes, then everything crashed. Audiobus puked, and I couldn't get jamup to recognize the USB interface. Force killed and restarted apps, replugged device, etc, no dice.

Then my iPad mini just rebooted by itself. When it came back up, it rebooted again. It wouldn't stop boot looping until I removed the USB interface. Once it rebooted without anything attached it was ok, and I could start the process over. But ever since it has been super flaky with the USB interface and basically doesn't work.

So yeah, I'm audio bummed. I guess I'm just ranting, unless anyone has tips. It looks like the Art Pre II just pulls too much power. I also plugged it into my ipad 2 via 30 pin CCK and it refused to work at all citing too much power. The weird thing is, I even plugged a 12v AC adapter into the USB Interface to take the load off the iPad and it didn't make a difference.

I was so excited for this to work right! And now I've gotta buy something else :(

  • Would a powered USB hub work?

As the camera kit is iPad only, I don't have any experience with it.

  • Sorry to hear that. The 'reboot looping' sounds like a serious bug though, I've never seen that before.

I have a sneaky suspicion that if you replace your 'refurbished' lightning adapter with a brand new one from Apple then this could help resolve your problem as there are a lot of fakes on the market.

I had a similar thing happen to me where I had some crazy crashes where my ipad sound went all 8bit and once it had a dull screen refresh effect like when you film a CRT screen you can see the refresh and just died.

I did as above and it solved my problem.

Check the lightning adapter very closely for its build quality and fine detail compared with your charger connection, see if you notice anything.......or maybe it wasn't refurbished that great !

  • I'm going to try a 9V battery in my USB interface today and see if that makes a difference. If I can find a powered USB hub I'll try that too.

@DaveMagoo yeah I'm worried about that. I ordered it from Amazon on the actual official Apple Lightning CCK product page, using the Refurbished option. It came in OEM Apple packaging and I'm 99% positive it's not a fake (I work in I.T., I'm pretty good at spotting knockoffs). It's definitely pre-used, there was dirt on the lightning connector, but the connector itself is the high quality Apple variety with the bead-blasted metal finish, not the crappy crimped connectors that the 3rd party ones use.

Still, it's possibly it's flaky. I'll try it with other accessories and see if it gives me any grief. Worst case I'll get a refund from Amazon and buy a new one.

  • Just tried a USB thumb drive with a few photos on it and got "This device draws too much power"

A USB keyboard worked for like 10 characters and then failed with "Unsupported device"

So... back to Amazon I guess :*(

  • Update 2: I found a USB hub with a dual-USB cable to provide auxiliary power. I plugged the data side into the iPad lightning CCK, the power side into my laptop's USB port for extra juice, and then everything worked. USB keyboard, thumb drive, USB audio interface...

So my CCK works fine with a powered hub. Is this par for the course? I've never used a lightning CCK... Does anyone else have problems with theirs powering thumb drives or keeyboards?

  • Update 3: According to this page using a regular unpowered USB hub will trick the iPad into sending out more current to the USB device. I just tested it and it appears to work... will have to test more thoroughly with a recording session to be sure.

  • Final update (I hope): I used a generic unpowered USB hub for an hour today with my refurb CCK and my Art Dual Pre II USB interface and it worked perfectly. Audiobus, Jamup, Magellan, Loopy, etc... no crashes or reboots.

  • I love it when a plan comes together
