Accessing "alternate" voices in Roland SC?

I was on the fence about whether I should start a new thread about this or not. After writing the rest of this thread, I figured it should.

I know there is something I'm missing here. I literally spent hours on google trying to find the answer. The thing is, I'm having a problem accessing "alternate" voices in SC via MIDI CC automation in the Sound Canvas app. I'm pretty adept at using MIDI (I still have my MIDI Companion book on my reference bookshelf in my studio), and I know how to automate control changes using an app such as Cubasis (although I am impatiently waiting for Modstep). I'm able to successfully change the main voice using the Program Change automation. However, I have no idea how to access the "alternative" voices.

In other words, I'm able to easily switch Piano 1 to Reed Organ using MIDI automation, but I'm not able to, say, change Piano 1 to the Piano + Str. patch. According to the appendix of the Sound Canvas manual (it starts on page 22 http://m.roland.mu/app/Scanvas/sci_manual_e.pdf ), the CC number to switch these voices is supposed to be 00. However, when I try to automate CC 00 to go from 000 to 024 in Cubasis, it doesn't work. Cubasis' MIDI automation section even lists it as the "bank selection" CC. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is this a bug in the Sound Canvas app?

The CC number to switch to Piano + Str patch is CC24 / PC1. I can't make it work in Cubasis, but it works perfectly in Pro Midi.

  • I just purchased Pro MIDI, and there doesn't seem to be a way to automate a program change (you can only set it) and no way to automate CC00 (which is bank automation). You can only automate CC32 (subbank automation). Despite the success in it setting specific main voices to be played, Sound Canvas still doesn't want to access the "alternate voices". Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Do I set the bank or sub bank to access the piano+str patch? (Neither worked here, so I'm just wondering how you did it.) Any advice on what to do here?

  • some vague theory here:
I've noticed that sometimes CC needs to be 'initialized', especially with older units. the only tool I've seen that does this is igor valisev's midi pattern sequencer:

    https://itunes.apple.com/app/midi-pattern-sequencer/id579508906?mt=8

    its clunky but very extensive....

i've also noticed that some virtual midi apps like to better listen to the 'local network', and not its own midi port.
this can be set up with audeonics midibridge:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id449160859?mt=8

it could be that you have better luck sending with this instead of to roland's virtual midi port.

May the fourth be with you

  • Thanks mate, but I'm actually referring to the Roland Sound Canvas app, not the SC-88. (It's all "in house" on the iPad.) This is good advice to know for the future if I purchase an SC-88 for my studio.

  • I know-! what I'm talking about is idiosyncrasies I've noticed along the way with different "all-on-the pad" apps.
This question really gets into the realm of hacking it until it works. I've had some luck doing this sort of voodoo, but i need to wait until at least tomorrow to get into solving it ... office work is killing me right now-! lol. if you don't solve it by tomorrow i'll start to work on a solution, because i love random problems like this

  • Alrighty mate. Let's see what we can do. (I'm on an iPad Air 2 with 128gb space running iOS 8.1.1.)

  • Just a reminder to check if your using Bank Change then Program Change after?

Right, but I can't find program change automation in Pro MIDI nor Bank Change (unless we're talking CC 32 which is the subbank change). Let me try that once in cubasis.

Ok, let's try to explain how I proceed :

    1- Open Pro Midi

2- Load SC as inter-App instrument in, for exemple, Pro Midi channel's 1

3- Set "MIDI To" to SC channel 1

4- Add a first "clip" than enter in edit mode by double-tapping it

5- Tap the little arrow on the bottom left side of the edit window

6- Tap "Velocity" (that should appear by default)

7- There, to access the "Piano + Str" preset on the SC, you have to set "Bank" to 25 and "Program" to 1 (leave "Sub Bank Select" to "-")

Now to "automate" the presets changing along a song, you "simply" have to :

A- Create as many "clips" as you need presets on each channel and define set "Bank" and "Program" in those "clips"

B- Finally, at the top of the edit window of these "clips", set the black arrows to define the "section" of the song for each preset.
I hope this will help... If not (I know my english is bad), let me know, I'll try to make screen captures ;)

  • Well son of a gun! THAT'S why it wasn't working in ProMIDI. I had to add a number on the bank patch, lol. Not 24, but 25. Fiddly, but it works. Thanks mate. :D

I also got it to work in Cubasis' automation system as per knewspeak's advice - bank select first. MAN! Everything's a piece of cake now. Thank you guys.

The best part about our "race for a cure" is we both win. :P Cheers mate.

  • That's how I did two decades ago with my MT-32, and they say tech has changed? Glad to help.

Tbf, MIDI hasn't really changed much since the 80s.

  • New question. Does ProMIDI have a "song mode" available (where I can play things back in a sequential order), or is it all live performance based?

  • Love this kind of forum-sourcing....good stuff.

Not a real song mode but you can set it to play the next clip automatically

  • Sweet. I think I got everything figured out now. Thanks guys.

  • mh, I when I tried to do program and bank changes in cubasis I noticed I can't put in values 1,2,3 and 4 because the graph is snapping to zero. Anyone else having this problem?

Yes I get the same thing, a work around is to draw in the CC, then switch snap to grid off, then select your CC event and now you can move it to 1,2,3, it just doesn't snap to a timing constraint.

    thanks for the workaround.
this is one of the most stupid and annoying bugs I've seen in a while
