Do you ever do "this", in the itunes store?
Maybe it's not as needed now, but before I knew of this forum, and MusicAppBlog, and discord, and others. I like to click on the username of a reviewer, and check out all of the other apps they have reviewed. (I don't think this is possible on the idevice, just from a computer).
Not just for music apps, but music and other apps as well. I've found some pretty interesting additions to my Arsenal this way.
Comments
I'll just leave the mandatory "Jordan Rudess" mention here.
I do that on all sites that offer online reviews where the feature is available. Too much "Astroturfing" and tit-for-tat reviewing around today. I don't do it for every review, just the ones that look a little fishy. Also good to know if the reviewer only gives bad reviews or always gives great reviews.
The review system in the AppStore simply doesn't work for me. Just have a look at random reviews of a random app; most ppl simply can't figure out what a review is, lol "if it would do blah I would rate it with 5 stars", "I can't figure out how to do blah, can you help me", it's as bad as the random comments on a random YouTube clip. Who needs that?
Interesting find but I think it's a shame the App Store even uses reviews. One man's trash is another's treasure. Always and forever. If I were a dev, I'd make a short feature commercial, ask TheSoundTestRoom to overview it, discchord palmsounds etc to review it, get an iOS artist that I like to make a song/demo, and introduce myself on the few iOS music forums that exist. That should be adequate hype and exposure wouldn't you say?
No.
I don't like most people and don't give a fuck what they say.
I don't even like most people.
That's why I am here on the Audiobus - ------------- that's where the credibility is greater than the other avenues. Not MUCH spam or insider fake hype.
@RustiK, I get that, and agree.
I think since I was not very clear in my original post, what I was trying to say, and actually said, were different.
I don't read most of the reviews, I only look at the apps in the review list. And just page through the first couple pages, to see if there is anything that looks interesting, that I may have missed.
One of my favorite songs, by Overkill, I Hate You........ RustiK..... Well what you said reminded me of it, I think you would "like" it.
"Planet's not big enough for me and you
So much trouble
Over me
Surrounded by jerks
Can't ya see?
Smile to my face
I know you lie
Knife in the back
Another game
Rules, rules, rules
Not for me
Ya fuckin' fool
Open your mouth
Just one more time
And my foot's goin' down
In one ear
Out the other
A waste of time
Don't even bother
I hate being here
I hate people that make you feel small
I hate having my back against the wall
You know, I hate being talked down to
I hate you...
You! I hate you
You! I hate you
I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate you"
Yes, I agree with that too. For sure.
I can tell pretty quick whether the review was by a paid reviewer or someone who doesn't know what the app is capable of. I can tell more about the app by looking at how well the developers webpage is done, and what level of professionalism is behind the scenes. I just want to know if they are in it for the long haul or not.
I love people who hate everybody too.
If anyone ever looked at all my reviews on the AppStore over the years I'd be mortified
Not just because of my cheesy prose stylings-!
I've gushed all over so many apps in the past 4+ years, crazy fanboy stuff that some devs have copy-pasted onto their websites, this for apps that now kinda suck and I have long since deleted...
In my defense I came out of the 60s, and the capabilities for music on iPad simply blew my mind, and it still does. I have a Moog on my iPad FFS, and I paid $2 for it and it sounds incredible. (Yes it's crashing all the time but Geerts on the case!)
In defense of High5denied It seems everyone is missing the point. Sure there are piles of poor reviews... when you do spot a real reviewer giving an intelligent opinion, then you can click on their name and see what other apps they are reviewing. Good idea.
In defense of everyone else, when we have forum.audiob.us and others why would you ever bother to wade thru the appstore reviews???? ;-)
Ya, what you said.
I don't take much notice of reviews on the store as if someone's had a real problem with an app and had a refund, their review is removed. - so you don't get to see the really bad stuff. I used to check reviewers history when I was on the Mac, but as this isn't supported on the iPad I've got out of the habit.
Since being on here though the feedback from you lot is the best guarantee of buying a decent app, and along with the Doug vid, all I need to make an informed purchase.
I never did that, i will try it
When on the App Store or retail stores like Amazon, I skip the positive reviews because there's a good chance they were written by the manufacturer. I find the negative reviews helpful. What I look for is technical problems.
The problem with the system review is that is the same...for everything.
I mean: many games offers to you extra levels of extra Game Center points if you leave the five stars (sic).
Many users (let's call them pro users) like many members of this forum, are really demanding persons because they have to do it. And when reviewing and app, they're thinking on MIDI, Midiclocksync, exporting options, etc., so many times, even if some apps are truly amazing, they don't give them five stars, because it means that app is close to be perfect.
And that's the reason why I barely review musical apps, because as newbie, it would be an unfair judgement, beacuse for my purpose, most of them I use them below 50% of their capability.
By the way, I'm not sure what would be the best alternative system. I was just writing what I was thinking about it.
