A basic App to App Midi tutorial

Here is an article I wrote for the AudioNewsRoom.net covering basics of app to app midi.

Hopefully it can be helpful to someone. Let me know what you think. I plan on doing a few more midi tutorials between App to App so if you have specific apps you would like to see let me know.

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • Nice article. This should be helpful to a lot of people. I hope the statement that Garageband doesn't have any midi capabilities is not misleading because I play Garageband's classic piano patch from a weighted keyboard all the time. I guess the article is focusing on "app to app" though.

BTW, CC actually stands for continuous controller.

  • Thanks for the input. Yes the article it's focusing on app to app midi.

I might need to revise it if causes confusion.

  • Hi, how about sync in Garageband?

  • So, GarageBand it only has MIDI Note In only. No sync, no note out? Is that right? That's kind of amazing.

  • Thanks for sharing. One thing I need to know about GB: Is there any sync or IAA sync funtion? I'm thinking apps like Thesys, Genome, arp...etc. in GarageBand

  • Nice! Great job.

  • I will have to check GB IAA sync.

  • Great!Thanks

  • Great job. Your article is well written. I look forward when you get into some of more advanced topics.

  • Good stuff. It was very helpful too me. I learned some things.

  • So I just did a quick test with garage band using IAA. All I have is my phone right now to test with. I could not get figure or Magellan jr to sync via IAA as far as tempo.

I did however get ElasticDrums to sync tempo and start/stop using it as an IAA instrument with GarageBand.

So I would assume that some apps may work that have IAA implemented. It would be something to test.

  • Good job! This is very interesting
