West Coast Synthesis on iOS
Hey people, just wondering how many of you out there are like me, and are desperate for there to be some kind of implementation of west coast synthesis on the ipad (meaning Buchla/Serge inspired sine waves into waveshapers/wavefolders, general non-reliance on resonant filters to shape sound, etc etc). Like, can i just get a low pass gate emulation, someone? I honestly would be so incredibly excited to have something like Aalto on my iPad - I honestly could go a year or two without seeing another analog emulating bread-n-butter synth come out; I'll admit to being a little burned out on straight 'saw wave or pulse into filter with LFO and ASDR modulation' synth programming recently.
Am I missing any apps already out there which approximate this approach? Obviously there's waveshaping/folding in z3ta, but the lack of a modulatable sine wave (and the fact that theres a certain digital jankiness to the waveshaping for my taste), along with it's slightly overstuffed interface makes me not so into it. I have been enjoying Tera synth, as I think that the basic tone is pretty good and it's got enough weirdness with it's FM/waveguide/formant filter to let me get freaky in patch design. Anything out there that I'm missing? Honestly I JUST WANT AALTO ON IPAD PLEASE GODS (or randy at madrona labs) MAKE THAT HAPPEN, I BEG THEE. i'm coming perilously close to just going modular, copping a make noise DPO and some other fun shit and saying goodbye to my meager savings account, but then I remember rent. An ipad synth would help stave off the madness for at least a while...

Nave?
Sunvox.
Pulse Code's Modular app:

They have more complex oscillator modules available.
I hear 'West Coast' and I think of blunts and G-Funk portamento saw waves.
Audulus?
Sounds like a call for more additives?
Hmm, additives are sorta there, but I suppose I'm also just more interested in emulating the Buchla approach in particular, which is a bit pickier. Theres just such a wonderful synthetic-but-organic sort of cyborg beauty to the textures people can get from those synths, and from complex oscillators in general. (example here:
especially around 1:30 or so. man, i want a music easel so bad, beyond all reason)
You could probably approximate some of these sounds with Nave, but through different techniques. I have to admit that for reasons that stump even me, I've never really liked Nave even though I love waldorf synths and my Blofeld gets like daily use - perhaps its an interface thing, although I also find something naggingly off about the sounds (probably all in my head)
Sunvox - I have it, but i'll admit that I tend to get stumped my even the most basic stuff in there. WIll give it another look. Does Audulus have waveshaping/folding?
I'll give the Modular app another look - I'd honestly forgotten about that one..
When I go looking for sounds like that, it's usually Addictive Synth or Animoog expansions.
Lol, same here:)
O.P.,What about iVCS3?
+1
I think Audulus would be the closest approach today. It is similar to NI Reaktor, you can build own subpatches (modules). There is also a Mac/PC version available where patching is a bit easier. Although I must say it is not too easy to build own modules.
Desktop software in that area is also rare. Next to Aalto, only the WEST// Ensemble for Reaktor comes to mind.
Aalto on iPad would be nice, but it appears the CPU workload is too high. I hope there will be one or two apps in future that cover the 'West Coast' synth philosophy.
I'd give ZEDSynth a spin, it's one of my favourite iOS Synths when it comes to tweaking and making 'unusual' sounds.

In the whole software world Aalto is good for drones, but so is it's sibling with physical modelling Kaivo, for it's age Tassman 4 from AAS, but the sounds from the video really speak's filter - subtractive, here on iOS probably calls for physical modelling synth's combined with a really good filter FX ?
Huh, don't know how i'd never really taken a look at that one before - looks interesting, thanks!!
Kaivo is pretty glorious, for sure. Its honestly silly, but I kind of hate using VST/AU synths - I spend all day on my computer working, and it's really hard for me to get into creative mode when sitting in front of it and interacting using a mouse and keyboard; for better or worse, i love using iPad synths because they feel more like a separate piece of hardware. For the record, you're totally right that the video I linked wasn't something that couldn't be achieved with subtractive or anything - sometimes gearlust is stupid, and I know that I could probably make a galaxy's worth of interesting music just using, say, sunrizer and a few outboard FX pedals. Part of this is really just falling in love with the sound of analog 'complex oscillators', and wanting a direct equivalent on my iPad. Either way, thanks for all the input, people.
I should note that it's extra crazy that i hate VST/AU synths since I typically track and edit all my music on my computer using either ableton or presonus studio one; its just that I find THAT part of the creative process works great for me on the computer (and I hate doing it on my ipad), but when it comes to patch creation/playing, i really prefer the ipad or hardware stuff.
I know, I feel the same, desktop tweeking synths can be a chore at times, like on the thread about the Surface, that would, if plugins were designed for touch, make things better, but it lacks raw CPU power, a half-way house would be an OS that could mirror from a powerful desktop to a touch device, best of both worlds, accessible with the power.
a buchla/serge ios synth would be my holy grail- pulsecode modular is starting to bring that stuff in- it has a Serge NTO like oscillator- ems is very west coast in spirit- so ivcs3 also brings a little bit of that FM oscillators with spring reverb vibe as well-
Sippin' on gin and juice, laaaaiid baaackkk
1st choice: iVCS3
2nd choice: via effects apps like Flux / Turnado with many synths it is doable.
I agree that iVCS3 is a very good modular app, and that combined with effects it can get interesting. Maybe build an LPG in Audulus and run an FM patch from iVCS3 through it. Unfortunately I don't spend enough time with Audulus to try it out myself.
Regarding Aalto, I manage to run it fairly well on a Win8 tablet. The CPU spikes occasionally, but the overall performance is usable. I use this tablet for recording (Cubase 5.5.3 instead of Auria on the iPad) and for few softsynths. I can even run Diva (in draft mode, but rendering is of course always in divine mode). And there are good Lemur templates for both synths, so in a way I have Aalto and Diva running on my iPad, just as control surfaces, not as synths.
@Raised_Eyebrows
Thanks for sharing that buchla easel vid. Your comments are spot on. And Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has a new fan:)
The obvious answer now to this ancient thread is Ripplemaker.
I'm so hooked to it and want me some more West coast action.
I'm barely resisting the temptation of getting a 0-Coast.
Just get Ripplemaker

isn’t ripplemaker west coast style? or close to it?
The fact that Ripplemaker wasn't mentioned in the post made me think this was some clever marketing ploy for it. Like... it's literally it.
Not back then but maybe me resurrecting this old thread is my way of given Bram Bos some free ad.
Seriously not enough affordable West Coastyness out there.
Didn't even look at the damn date.
Give Bram Bos all the free ads... and your money!
I actually wish I could buy Ripplemaker as a physical unit. That's how good it is.
Hahah. I didn’t see the original date either.
Just back the truck up to Bram Bos house of magical synthesis and wait for the good vibes to flow
