Demos become songs
In the spirit of a discussion in the May song of the month club, I thought it would be interesting to post a demo that turned into a finished song. If anyone wants to do the same, that would be cool to hear.
I get together with my shutterwax bandmates, scattered around the US, in Maine each summer for one week and we write and record. Everyone has other careers, families, etc, now, so this is a way to block the world out and be totally immersed in creativity for the week. It's a great battery recharge for us all.
This demo, Rise of the Bird, was done on nanostudio on my iPhone standing on the corner of west 82nd st and Columbus ave in NYC. The clever title comes from the fact that I was listening to Phoenix when I got the idea (while driving into the city). I believe I was upset with my wife at that particular moment, who knows about what but I'm sure it was dumb. At least I had words to sing rather than my usual demo mumbling....
Here it is:
I was surprised when my bandmates liked it, but it turned into the first song on our new album ( I hope you like it). It's (not) called "Surrender."
The song became about an unintentionally demanding wife and her hard working husband (don't yell at me- the female singer is the guitarist's wife and she was in on the idea). British ska combined with the Andrews Sisters. Why not? And the intro is quiet- don't turn up or you'll be blown out of your seat when the song kicks in...

Have fun with this topic!

Awesome tracks. Dig Me a Well is great. I really like Rise of the Bird because I'm a big Phoniex fan. It's amazing you were able to great audio on a street corner with your iPhone.
Thanks! Yes, this technology blows me away. Feel free to download anything on that page as well, no need to pay, I'm happy we finished and released it and if you find it enjoyable that makes me very happy!
Im mad at my wife also!
I need to write a jam. Awesome track!
That's really cool, especially that you guys are still doing it. My old band mates and I played all through the late sixties and thru all of the seventies. Disbanded in the early eighties but managed to get together every couple of years for a gig or two and a little recording. This new melienia, not so much, only once so far and now we are all old men. we are scattered all over the map nowadays and I think it unlikely we'll ever get together again. I'd try to do it over the interweb but most of the band would find that a challenge I think.
Anyway, it was great hearing the demo and some sigificant new instrumentation and arrangement after the band got involved. Good stuff!!!
Syncs well with the tighty-whitey scene from Birdman. (Press play when he pulls the rug out of the robe)
@mrufino1 bought your Dig Me a Well album from Band Camp. Cool how you mix different genres. Great album! :-)
Thanks! Much appreciated! The album was mixed entirely in auria, I don't think I would have ever finished mixing it otherwise.
@mrufino1 very good. And great to hear a band banging it out. I do find (musically) the ios output to be predominantly singular and hearing the evident contributions from more than one head/skillset always seems to add another whole level of energy.
Surely someone else has a demo and final to post? I didn't want the thread to be just about the one I posted!
No, we've had a discussion about the matter and all decided this is going to be your special space from now on. Help us keep an eye on what you're up to etc.
Egg sellent. I'm not on Facebook anymore so I'll let you know every move. I'm playing a casino tonight. Getting ready to eat first. Shall I post a photo of my food? ;-)
Preferably before ingress!
Or not....
Actually, at some stage I think the Forum should open up an Instagram account and post stuff from around the globe. Not quite certain how to do that sensibly/securely, but I can imagine it being interesting and fun.
Ha! I am social media free, except for a twitter account that was set up for me but never used. I don't remember how to even log in.
Great tracks! Dug me a Well put me in mind of British band Jump for some reason, maybe a thematic link to their song Horse To Water:

Ok, here's an excerpt from my first take for my April Song of the Month Club entry, the Police-y thing:
vs the final version:
I have an awful lot of 'before' entries.....still optimistic there will be some 'afters' also
@eustressor- cool development from demo to finished! No question on the police influence, but I liked it a lot. You heard the police influence on our song too. If you're going to show your influences, I think the police is a good one! Thanks for posting though, I think a demo, no matter how rough, takes on a certain charm when played with a finished version.
Sorry I'm a little confused. Aren't you guys talking about the first draft/sketch versus the finished article? Demo would be something used for demonstration, perhaps a bit rough but still something to show to others. I have a feeling that many of the finished recordings are indeed demos as opposed to something that ends up on an official release/vinyl what have you. Sorry if I'm completely off target though. Just mumbling.
I'm not sure I understand your question. In my case I had a demo, which was also the first attempt, and the final version, which is on our album. But, it doesn't matter, I just thought that since a few of the songs in the may thread (including mine) were said to be demos and the master has not yet been recorded, it would be fun to post something from my (and anyone else's) past that had started as a demo in some form -first scratch, demo, anything. In my case it's pretty much one and the same since I'm writing during the year with the intention of refining and recording with my band each summer. We do this for only a week, so refining happens fairly quickly. Some songs are usually left over because they didn't get fully realized, and may be revisited. Or maybe not.
Never Mind @mrufino1 I was just rambling.
Gotcha. We're entitled to a good ramble!
Indeed we are, I believe -according to the Forum constitution- it is biannually incumbent upon us etc.
Thank you, I'm glad to hear you liked it! This was a one-off deliberate homage to Stewart Copeland and Co., so it's a bit heavy-handed, but it was fun to give "Police-style" a shot.
I agree, I enjoy tracking down demos and unreleased/alternate versions of songs by the artists I love the most. Which can lead to interesting conversations with the missus ... "Don't you already have THREE copies of that album?"
BTW, I've been a fan of those crazy Shutterwax kids ever since they rented ad space waaayyyy back on thesoundtestroom.com v1.0 ...
We rented ad space on thesoundtestroom? But thank you, it makes me happy when someone enjoys it.
If you have ADHD, as I do, then you're entitled to a good ramble every...so did you notice that people seem to be slowing down on apps these days? I tend to stick with the same few now.
Huh? Oh, every few minutes.
I thought you did ... I know I heard about Shutterwax and listened to your album before I was active here ... Hmmm. Auria Forum perhaps?
Look.....a squirrel.
That could be. I also did an article with music app blog about the production of the last song on the album maybe that was the source. In any event, I'm glad you enjoy it, it means a lot!
As Murray Hewitt (or Brian Nesbitt if you like radio better) said, "Guys, we've tripled our fan base , we're going to need 2 more shirts..."
Thought I'd pull this thread up, seeing as I have a very rough demo I just recorded, and hope to turn into something much more listenable in a week or two. For future comparison's sake:
