Dropbox and Crystal Synth XT

Is dropbox working for anyone with Crystal? I'm on 8.2.
I get instant crash when I hit the dropbox icon inside Crystal. Any ideas?

  • @Musikman4Christ Sorry you are having problems. This is why I haven't purchased it yet.

I don't get a crash (still on iOSv7.1.2). On first use it allowed me to link Crystal to Dropbox but subsequent taps on the Dropbox do absolutely nothing! I wonder what is supposed to happen when tapping the Dropbox icon. Confused :(

  • iOS .3?? Wasn't that before wifi @Flo26? ;-)

  • Thanks!
It did work the first time but nothing after that as well.
Good thing I can access the folder state with iFunbox though.
But this synth is still so amazing at the sounds it can make.

  • The dropbox feature in Crystal Synth XT works fine here and this the first report of any problems I've heard of. Did you follow the instructions here: http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/tutorial.html ?

In particular, make sure you have this folder in your dropbox:
    /Apps/CrystalSynth/CrystalPatchBanks

After you create it, you can find some patch bank files here to put it that folder:
    http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/patches.html

  • @crystal Thanks for the response Glenn. Good to see you about the place...

So far Crystal Synth is my top fav synth. I am truly amazed at the type of sounds it makes. I just want to really learn how to use it cause I made this awesome Cinematic Strings Pad and I overwrote it accidentally when I opened the list of other available patches and when I clicked it, my custom patch was gone. So now I'm being extreme careful. Thanks for this amazing synth!

  • I'm pretty sure you didn't lose your patch. Crystal doesn't overwrite anything when you select a patch from the list. You're simply choosing which patch to to play when you do that. Your patch is still in the list and can be reloaded by selecting it.

When I click on the main drop down there are choice for Pads 1 & 2, Motifs, and I forgot what else, but when I selected say, pads 2, all my custom patches were gone and were replaced with unused named slots. I also noticed that it makes some kind of backup files with a date in them. I wonder if my presets are in any of those. I haven't touched those in fear that it may overwrite my custom patches.

I'm positive its my fault. I just dove into making patches as I was so amazed at the power of the breeding system.

Also, when I go back to desktop to launch another app, when I come back to Crystal, its upside down. No biggie as I can fix that but wondered I this is a known issue.

I'll read the manual and learn more cause this Synth has so much potential for sounds it is simply amazing!

  • @crystal
Thanks for the most amazing free vst synth/most amazing (5$!) iOS synth ever. And all the updates, patches, support. Extraordinary.

  • Any ideas why it gets upside down when I go out of the app and return to the app ? IOS 8.2

  • Thanks, @crystal. Linking CrystalXT and Dropbox created the /Apps/CrystalSynth folder on Dropbox but not the CrystalPatchBanks sub-folder. I created it manually and all is working well now. Thanks for the link to the extra banks too :D

It seems that CrystalSynthXT likes to start with the 'Home' button on the left, although it will rotate as appropriate. It's a pity it doesn't sense the iPad's orientation before drawing the screen. DrumJam is the same. Makes me quite seasick! ;)

  • Mine doesnt auto rotate though. I wonder why? Also, no matter how many times I have added and deleted the dropbox folder and named it exactly as instructed, I still can't get it to work. When I click on the dB icon in Crystal, it just blinks like for four times i think, then it sends me back to home screen. The Crystal app is still open though, but when i go back to it, it is upside down and it wont reset itself unless i manually do so with the buttons.

I think I might have to reset my entire iPad.

  • Okay, got it to auto rotate but it does only when I pick up my iPad and turn the ipad around. I though that it would automatically detect the iPad being in landscape the opposite way. I guess its no biggie, but if Im playing live, it will look kind of silly to be doing this if for any reason i had to go to the home screen and come back to Crystal.

I still gotta solve this dropbox mystery man. It boggles my mind. I tried everything. But I don't want to delete Crystal as I will lose my created patches. I tried it with the DB app and also doing it on line with the browser. No go.

Washboy, so is the communication between Crystal and DB bidirectional? So you can open in" Crystal and from Crystal save to Drop box?

I just downloaded all the patches from the link by Crystal and placed them inside the folder in dropbox but no joy still.

In Crystal, I opened up the list button that is next to the dropbox icon and saw the following Patch Banks available:
    Ambient1.fxb
    Motifs1.fxb
    Vintage1.fxb
    Pads1.fxb
    Pads2.fxb
    ZBackup_150515_a7ee8d3d.fxb
    ZBackup_150522_b28fe6b.fxb

Under the list of all presets, I have at the very end one called Crystal Patches
Then the list is a couple of blanks and then some called "unused"

Well this is where I had all my custom patches.

Can you check your and see if that is what yours shows?

I selected each of the banks, and guess what? now my custom presets are gone! :(

Even in the ZBackup ones they are not there.

I really love this Synth, but if I can't save my hard programming work, it's going to be like a rompler for me. I really love it and I might just go ahead and reset my entire iPad back to factory specs just for this synth. I'm trying not to go that route though if possible. Thanks for all the tips and ideas.

  • Sorry, I can't explain that. Crystal doesn't delete files from Dropbox. But, just to be clear, you don't need Dropbox to save custom patches. Any patches you create are always saved on your iPad. Dropbox is only used to share patches with other devices.

  • Oh I see. It's just that for some odd reason the patches I had saved in the unused slots are gone. Maybe I not still understanding the whole saving concept but I know they where there. When I opened the list of available banks as listed above, once I selected any of them, the patches I had saved in the unused slots were gone.

There is something strange going on, I saved two patches with names then went in the bank and slots that had been named were blank (no name, and it "unused"). When I select the two blanks, the patches play the way I remember, but the names are gone. This from using the breed feature. I'll try adapting an existing patch and re-saving it...

  • I love this synth so much. Cause now that we have Synthmaster, it is like having the full version of Synthmaster. I have heard patches that sound as I was playing Synthmaster and vice versa.
I really hope the preset erasing issue gets fixed.

  • @Musikman4Christ: Frankly, I'm no expert on either Crystal or Dropbox. However, my experiments (I should RTFM, really) show that from Crystal you can definitely save to Dropbox. It will save the current patch bank to ./Apps/CrystalSynth/CrystalPatchBanks on Dropbox. Similarly, patch bank files residing in that Dropbox folder can be opened in Crystal. Unfortunately, it appears that Crystal does not have 'Open In...' support for '.fxb' or '.zip' files so Dropbox appears to be the only supported offline storage.

I suspect that your Crystal installation is not linked to Dropbox properly. Did you create the 'CrystalSynth' folder in Dropbox's './Apps' folder or was it already there? If you had to create it manually then I reckon they're not linked after all. Regrettably, I can't recommend how to fix that without needing to reinstall Crystal.

    Hopefully, @crystal can advise.

  • One thing to note is that working with patches is pretty simple in Crystal. You have a bank of patches at your disposal. The first half of the bank is factory patches which can't be modified and the second half are user patches for your own use.

When creating your own patches, any changes you make to parameters are automatically preserved. There is no need to explicitly save anything. Your patches will always be there with your latest changes. And there is no need to use Dropbox to save your patches. I hope that helps, but let me know if you have questions or suggestions.

What looks like is happening- the new patches I make go into the "back up" versions of given banks fxb, and the patches are there, even if I make them from a preset or the breeding feature within a factory or dl'ed bank.
