Good sampling workflows

Lately I've been having more fun spending time getting samples together, for (hopefully) later use, rather than trying to write a full composition from scratch.

What are some of your favorite workflows on iOS to generate samples? Here are some of mine:

  • Load a previous sample into Egoist's slicer feature, control that with a MIDI sequencer -> Loopy

  • Searching for Esoteric vocal bits or otherwise in Amplifind -> iDensity -> Audioshare

  • Using Different Drummer to sequence a lead patch in any synth -> Loopy (also exporting MIDI files from DD into Audioshare)

Comments

  • The arp function (set to the tempo of your track) in Samplr on a random music or vocal sample - normally produces something pretty rhythmic and good...

Great thread idea! @calcutta why do you like amplifind?

For me, I like using any of the dj apps, but usually djay2 or traktor and looping certain sections, then running that through fx or using the built in fx from dj app into audioshare via audiobus

I like Amplifind because it integrates both Soundcloud and Spotify (and, until extremely recently, Grooveshark). It's a very fast way to get at certain source material easily. I'm usually surprised what can be found on Amplifind's search of Soundcloud. For instance, I've found bits from Milton Erickson or Eli Jaxon-Bear (imo, neat voices for sampling purposes) just searching Soundcloud via-Amplifind.

If Soundcloud would playback at something better than 128kbps, I'd use it for more than just voices (I can accept vocal samples at that bitrate 'cause there's usually a lot of processing that's going to happen with it anyway).

For Spotify specifically...c'mon DJay2 for iPad, playback at 320!!!

  • Anytune v 3.10.1 (sample from YT) ---> audioshare ---> samplr ---> magic.

  • @CalCutta Thanks for starting this thread. I wasn't aware of the ApeSoft apps. I purchased the bundle.

  • There goes your weekend :)

  • lol Yes I know. You can take hours to this. Plus there's nothing like having a tablet in your hand on the couch, instead of sitting hunched over a keyboard with a mouse. You can lie in bed and create music and video. Welcome to the 21st century! :)

  • Playing Dedalus, Sparkle, SoundScaper, iVCS3 or Sliver into audioshare for a bit then editing down to a useable sample or loop. I have a lot sitting in Audioshare that may or may not become something

This. I have a lot of Sliver, and Deregulator pieces sitting that hopefully I'll use somewhere.

  • gonna sound silly but you'd be surprised... I often play riffs/jam out on different instruments without the sound being audible and find many nice surprises afterwards in the fodder to sample from, and when you do this with drums the disconnect of hearing the drums like you usually do often brings forth quirky little timing deficiencies.
basically i do this as a pick me up method at least once or twice during long sessions working on music when I've noticed that I'm not blinking or breathing anymore

this is a cool way to discover bits to flesh out in more detail, or you can just loop it and add fx. oneohtrix point never made a really cool tape just by looping bits of pop songs and adding fx, calling it eccojams

for more in-depth tweaking, i use samplr, idensity, egoist, or sometimes abu dhabi in gadget.

And another +1. Deaf cut-up. Cool.

  • @blanksmaiden eccojams are really fun. nice to see it mentioned here.

they're great for when you're in a creative slump. i made a tape of them earlier this year and it helped me get back into the swing of things

another thing i've been doing recently is spending a few hours just playing small (<30sec) bits on a midi keyboard in various synths/instruments, recording them, trimming them down, then load them into samplr and see how they go with each other / other things. last time i did it was like 3 weeks ago and i got 100+ files, using quite a few now.

  • @blanksmaiden That's a good idea with the small synth lines and then chopping later. I saw a mini-interview with Legowelt by FACT mag about how he makes a track, often times he'll pump one of his awesome synths through a few interfaces and then chop it up and effect it in Ableton. I might try the same using studiomux to get sound into a daw, find sections with Audacity, then go from there.

    Gonna check out those tracks!

Anytune Pro, old version used to rip from YT.

Edit: guess that's not much help is it?

  • Bought Amplifind on recommendation from this thread and it's not working on my iphone 6, or on my ipad 4. Both are on ios9, and both freeze after a couple of touches on the UI. Is Amplifind incompatible with ios9?

    love Legowelt

  • such good music and he just gives it away

  • Hi All. I bought Amplifind hoping to be able to access songs on YouTube to play along with, or mangle, etc. in AUM or AB or wherever but it seems that the YouTube feature is disabled for certain users based on location. I'm in the US (California). Am I correct that it just won't work for me, or is there a workaround? Do any of you successfully get YT input to Amplifind in the US?

New Boffin to me. Not my cup of tea, but an interesting mellow-yet-speedy guy...

  • he's quite a character

That's a pretty apt description of him. He's released tons of stuff so there's a little variety to what he does but it's all very synth-heavy and usually has that 4 to the floor kick going. His website looks more like web '1.0', and there's archives of a bunch of dj sets and radio shows he did, playing a bigger variety of music.

  • Does egoist sample directly from IIA? Like impc pro does? I like chopping my own samples in impc pro but wouldn't mind trying out a step sequence type approach

  • the impc pro has a step sequencer too, hit the timeline tab and the samples are on the left side of the screen, you can step them in or even tap them in realtime while recording from that same list.

    Ah cool thanks!
