Field Recording, IOS specific what kind of mic are you using with your device for Field Recordings

  • I've done some with a Zoom IQ5 lightning connector microphone. Quality is reasonable, especially at the price.

  • I have the IK Mic Field, pretty happy with it. Botched a couple clips due to wierd artifacts where it became slightly unseated from the lightning connector, but that might be due to my phone's case as much as the mic.

  • I recorded some nature sounds just with the iPhone 5 intern mic and was surprised from the good quality. And that little included lo-fi did nice textures after processing too ;)

  • Tascam im2 on iPhone 4s.

  • Rode ixy, I like it a lot

I have a Zoom Q2HD which works directly as an audio input when connected (sometimes) using the camera connection kit. But for out-and-about, I’d prefer to use it standalone.

  • Here's some Howler Monkeys in Belize, there's a baseline of insect noise, cause it's the jungle...

Yeah, Rode has always impressed me with their awesome sensitivity. The ixy is just as good as the NT series. I also use it on my iPhone with a 30 pin to lightning adapter using Multitrack DAW or Audioshare.

I wound up getting the Lightning version, use it with Audioshare. I wish that I didn't need to use Rode's proprietary app to turn the gain up on it though. Small complaint but kinda annoying when I'm trying to record outside, as it's much easier to record directly into Audioshare.

edit: But yeah the mic sounds incredible. Best field recording quality I've ever got.

  • I use an Olympus DM-901. It does not plug into my IOS devices directly but connects via wi-fi. It can be remotely controlled via an app. and files can be transferred to Dropbox. http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/dm-901.html

I got it for $50 from a Radio Shack store that was closing a few months ago.

  • iM2 on iPhone 5 with adapter, or Zoom H1.

  • I just got the Rode iXY-l version as well, and yeah it's amazing for the price. I like the Rode app myself, but then again I've been using Audiofile's Fire app for years with the built in mic to capture samples. The Rode app is basically the same as Fire.

The mic itself is great though, good stereo seperation and not overly sensitive to handling noise with the iPhone6. The carry case is nice, though I wish there was a smaller one for when you don't need the windscreen. My only complaint about the i-XY is actually the windscreen it comes with, I don't think the holes in it for the capsules do a particularly good job attaching it to the mic securely.

    Otherwise great mic.

  • thanks for all the tips everybody, gonna check them all out, @ Tarekith regarding the windscreens did you get some others that work better or you're sticking with the ones it came with?

  • Agree completely about the windscreen. If you really force/guide it on, it will sit snug.
