Multitimbral iOS instruments
Lets make a list of instruments that can be set up on more than one midi port. Should be useful for those using MTS or Cubasis or the future Auria Pro.
From what I have:
iM1 - 8 part
iMS20 - 7 part
Casio CZ - 4 part
Comments
Roland Sound Canvas - 16 part
Thumbjam - 8 part
bs-16i - 16 part
Sampletank - 4 part
Magellan - 2 part
iPolysix - 3 parts
Stroke Machine - 12 parts (synth) + 1 part (12 synthesized drums)
NanoStudio - 15 parts
iSyn Poly - 3 parts (synth) + 1 part (9 PCM drums)
Note: Background audio only available when connected to Audiobus.
FL Studio mobile, Music Studio - ? (many)
Caustic - 14 parts
...Sampletank 8 MIDI-channels if you combined the payed version and the free version!
Nice to know, only if it wasn't by the amount of storage space required by each SampleTank instance. Also, I suppose that you'd need to purchase again the IAPs... :S
IK Multimedia @ikmultimedia should definitely consider increasing SampleTank's multitimbrality to at least 8 part. The first version of iOS SampleTank was released in late 2011 (iPad 2 era), maybe at that time it made sense limiting it to 4 part, but that reasoning doesn't apply anymore for newer devices...
I'd really love to be able to sequence 8 (or more) SampleTank parts with Genome sequencer.
I agree the limitation doesn't seem to make sense any more.
but they would need to make interface changes to accomodate the 8 parts which makes it unlikely to happen
Sound font Pro 4 part for full keyboard, 8 part with splits.
Stroke Machine can do 12 synth parts + 1 drum part.
I thought this list would be even more useful if we detailed which instruments also support multiple Audio Outs via Audiobus.
Support multiple Audio Outs:
Don't support multiple Audio Outs:
Unknown (I don't own the following apps, please contribute if you own any of them):
How did you count four parts for iMS-20?
And the winner again is ThumbJam.... damn.... i think we have to do something special for this developer
If there would be an iOS music app oscar....
Sorry, my mistake. It's 7 parts. 6 drums and one synth. You can program the drums to any sound you want and then programm as a regular synth part in a DAW like MTS or Cubasis.
I think that iMS-20 should be listed as 1 part (mono synth) + 6 part (rendered short samples)
Same por iPolysix, 2 part (poly synths) + 6 part (rendered short samples)
Gestrument and SquareSynth both have 8.
BeatHawk has 16
I'm wondering if gadget would be able to be used like a multimbral synth, used with a daw?
I believe NTBYF and DoubleDecker both support multi-timbal...I think 16 channels, but I'm not certain on that either.
It would be good if Gadget could be used in that manner, but only the active gadget responds to midi.
There are also the DAWs with audio engines...Cubasis and MTS come to mind.
NTBYF didn't work for me. When I set up a virtual midi track in MTS all I got was crackles on midi playback.
It works for me using Different Drummer, however it is only two part multi-timbal.
Thanks for clearing that up! Being on Apples naughty no return list, getting gadget would have been an expensive mistake.
I'm pretty surprised at all these apps foregoing stuff that would be considered absolutely essantial in a hardware product. Like this example, not supporting midi sustain etc. Even from a big player like Korg. This is a shame and a big step backwards in my book. We should not stand for it :-)
Sir Sampleton - 12 part
Beaatmaker 2, 16 parts internally, plus as many IAA synths as can run.
Multichannel outs: AD480, Cubasis, Auria, and MiMix.
And, the ultimate multitimbral synth - the iPad itself.
