Excellent list @Samu
And I'm really glad to hear someone else is falling hard for this app.
I think I mentioned this before but have you checked out the Tape Saturation? x
@rhcball
I'm also trying to figure out how to easily explain some of the ideas I have...
I really do like the 'tape-recorder' (I've been recording random stuff from the television, lots of hilarious clips). So it would be nice if it was possible to 'pause' the recording so there would be no need to re-arm it before continuing recording the next clip. The app could also auto-generate 'markers'(start and stop/pause of recording) so it would be easy to extract segments for further editing at later point. Hence, export 'marked section from the tape' and trim, normalise reverse etc, If a simple sample editor gets implemented. It is already possible to export selection from the tape to a pad, but without accurate trimming and the 'slice editor' doesn't yet allow precise 'slicing'(too small view). (Yepp, I've zoomed in and scrolled around the tape to make a selection, but it's too coarse for accuracy).
It should naturally be possible to manually add markers to the tape and and imported loops/sounds would also get markers automatically. This would be like complete 'index' of the virtual tape. The markers could simply contain date & time for the recorded events.
I do like that it's possibility to apply effects while recording and the eq & noise-gate is pretty effective...
The tape effects have a nice compressor, so it would not hurt to have a separate compressor input for nice ducking effects.
It's quite amusing to have a 'speech' (say from the news) and overdub live with silly effects. Overdub should not 'alter' the markers.
There should also be some kind of 'sync' so if recording is armed, it should start recording when starting pattern playback.
To be honest I'm not focusing on 'Midi' (for now) as i see FingerBeat as a 'performance sampler' and as such it will be hard to beat.
I've had some strange issues when exporting songs (Share/Export Song), there is a strange 'silence' in the beginning and and all the sounds 'ring out'meaning further trimming is needed.
If this makes sense to anyone I'll try to clean it up and send it away...
Needless to say it's a really fun app to use
@Proppa Do you mean the 'Tape Effects' on the Tape? (The Compressor, EQ/Cut-Filter, Pan Delay, Reverb).
It's really silly, but it's next to impossible to avoid 'scratching' the Tape
@Samu yes exactly right ('Compressor' not 'Saturation' my mistake)
Scratching the tape is a Must. How could you not?
This is a great list @samu, glad also to see you had items here that I'd sent in to the dev as well. Good to reiterate/triangulate. I'll copy paste your latest into my next email to the guy...
@Littlewoodg Thanks! Hope the latest stuff makes sense with tape-index etc...
Maybe it would be good to somehow get the dev. to drop by here too?
When I sent the lists (I've already sent two of them) I asked if there was a road-map or list of pending features, this way we could avoid sending duplicate requests for the same things
Considering how flexible the pads are there is no need for more pads for now, especially if it will be possible to trigger the slices using the 'piano-typ' interface (splitting a pad into 16 slices makes the slices very small haha).
Noticed that the betas have expiration dates so i suppose a new version will be available before the old one expires...
@samu
Yep, so far the versions appear in iTunes as updates, and seems like his expiration dates are getting longer as the updates come quicker and quicker, the first beta from few weeks ago was updated within ten days, then the next beta had a 30 day expiration which he beat by three weeks with the second update...
I know I'm always very hopeful, but, you know, I'm hopeful about this one. Fresh approach, fun to play, surprising depth, and responsive so far at the dev. level...a lot to like.
I know, I know, not too high, not too low....
Did you testers look at the time signatures ?
Interesting that each pattern can have its own timing. Nice feature.
However there are some odd resolutions....take 7/8 for example.
It should have 7 x 1/8th notes or 14 x 16th notes, (since the grid is in 16th) as a default (9/8, 12/8 is same)
Now there are 7 bars of 8 squares, which is technically correct since they are 64ths, but it is a strange way of "switching" to 64ths...
Seems to me should be 14 of 16th notes in 7/8 time
@soundklinik alternate grid resolutions were in my list of feature requests - I couldn't work out how to drop some triplets over an otherwise 4/4 beat - wasn't sure if I had missed the grid setting or if there wasn't one there.
@Littlewoodg I'll try to clean-up the 'tape with index' and forward it to the developer.
I feel this will be a great feature to keep track of the material recorded to the tape(s).
It's like making a 'mix-tape' with favourite sound-snipets indexed with easy access and looping that can be used for performance too, damned i love 'tape-scratching', now where is the 'mute' button to perform 'gate-effects'
@Proppa Agree on the triplets, It's not the same as going for other time-signatures as it will screw up the tempo.
I've also had some issues with exporting sounds, the exported sound has some silence in the beginning and no way to export only the loop, the tail is always there, and well the UI can sometimes 'freeze'(meaning no way to swipe between screens, need to hide and bring back again, same when changing orientation). I use FingerBeat in landscape mode on my iPad Air 2. But I do wonder how one can start playback in portrait mode when the pad screen is viewed, the only way to start playback is by start/disable recording or start playback from one of the other screens.
So far I really do like what I see, very 'clean' UI considering the number of features it packs and nice usage of Core Animation ('Rubber band Effect') features in FX Live-Trigger.
I'm also trying to find a good way 'explain' how it would be easy to do 'drum-rolls' if the pad allowed triggering of the 'slices' when rubbing the pad, you can already trigger the different pads by just swiping the finger over the pads, but it will not trigger the individual slices of the pads.
I'll also mention this thread to the developer and hopefully we'll see a message or two from them
Lol, just sent an e-mail to the developer with 'cleaned up' ideas for the tape-recoder but forgot to invite them to join us here, talk about being focused...
Soon I'm like 'Fingering my surface a lot', this is one of the ideas regarding the pads that somehow also got sent away...
Pads
As it is now it’s possible to slide the finger across the pads to trigger the sounds.
Unfortunately it does not trigger the individual pad-slices when sliding the finger over a pad.
Sliding or ‘Rubbing’ a finger over a pad could be used to create ‘drum-rolls’(if the pad consists of multiple sounds)...
...or to create complete cacaphony if it’s other type of sounds, it’s creative and fun, think about it
I've been spending a lot of time with the tape-recorder, it's super useful for capturing sounds and if my proposed 'index feature' gets implemented it will be a very good place to store sounds that can be easily assigned to pads when needed...
alternate grid resolutions were in my list of feature requests - I couldn't work out how to drop some triplets over an otherwise 4/4 beat - wasn't sure if I had missed the grid setting or if there wasn't one there.
Same here, different grids was my first request with a few other things, mostly what @samu requested...
changing time signature doesn't make triplets...it will change the rhythm....we really need to be able to insert triplet "thing" switching between triplet/normal grid in any of 8 pads.
For rolls, do you remember Zillidrone ? There is a neat feature; if you drag around within the pad it will make rolls...inside faster, outside slower (if I remember correctly)..or vica versa
12/8 is basically 4/4 beat with triplets but not the way it is in FB.
There are 12 bars with 8 x 64ths in each bar, check it out.
Length of notes can be done by dragging the tail up down, try on open hat.
Ok, so I love the Tape-Recorder in FingerBeat...
Here is the list of suggestion i cent just an hour or so ago that would improve it like a lot
Tape-Recorder
First of all, The Tape-Recorder and Pads are by far my most favourite features of FingerBeat.
It’s so easy to use the Tape-Recorder to capture external sounds (I record stuff from TV, Radio, External Synhts etc.).
What I would like to see is a ‘Tape-Index’ of the recorded events and imports.
So every time we record or import stuff to the tape it would get a ‘Named Index’.
Default index name for ’recording’ could be
hh:mm:ss - YYYY/MM/DD
Default index name for ‘import’ could be
filename - YYYY/MM/DD
It should naturally be possible to ‘cut/copy/paste/export’ stuff from the tape based on the index.
(Ie. select an named index, and it would mark the section on the tape making it possible to do cut/copy/paste/export).
It should also be possible to add additional index-markers to already recorded material on the tape.
Renaming of index-item would be handy too as it will make it easier to keep track on what is stored on the tape.
This could also be seen as ‘tape-bookmarks’.
By having these ‘tape-index/bookmakrs’ it will be easier to find and select the correct place on the tape.
Once the correct part of the tape is exported to it’s own file it would be good to have a simple ‘Sample-Editor’ to enable precise trim, normalise and reverse of the sound, and maybe fade in/out too.
It would be nice to have a ‘pause button’ to avoid having to press record and then play to continue recording.
And finally (for this e-mail), when using ‘Open In...’ from other apps it would be nice if the tape was not ‘replaced’ with the imported sound but rather added to the end of the current tape with proper-index offcourse.(This would make it easy to add material to a tape from files sent to FingerBeat using ‘Open In...’ from other apps).
Great work @Samu. so interesting to compare the attitude we bring to something with potential when shared in Beta which needs work as opposed to something we've bought and find problems with coughattackcough...
@JohnnyGoodyear For me it's more like 'If someone genuinly asks for help they are more likely to get help' but trying to repair 'the damage' already done by some developers (Retardnyms or something like being one of them) attitude ('If it's not invited here it will not be implemented') towards customers and their feedback and requests it is bound to give them some sour comments and bad PR sooner or later...
I'll give the FingerBeat developer some breathing room now, because if most of the things I've mention in the 4 mails i've sent so far get implemented it will take a at least a week or two before we see a new beta
Agreed, both on human nature and the need to let the poor man get on with his multi-various new work
As there are a few beta-testers of FingerBeat here I wonder if you've found a way to adjust the volume or relative of individual slices?(This is mainly to balance the level of the sounds on one pad).
Never mind, I sent a request to the developer asking for options to adjust individual slice-volumes on the pads.
I also asked for proper 'Stereo-Recording' support, meaning recording in stereo if the source has support for it and also support for 'Stereo-Samples' for the pads...
And well, naturally the app should have support for recording from AudioBus or IAA sources...
I do have to say FingerBeat is a super-fun app to use
(I must also admit I was fooled in the beginning thinking this was a 'toy app' with a colourful UI).
I am also in on the beta. My favorite part of the app so far is sliding my fingers over the sections of the pads, creating some pretty cool rhythms. I'm not a drummer, so to me even doing this on the various sections of the toms is creating neat percussive sounds. Pretty fun!
Fingerbeat 2.0 (beta) out now - several issues addressed - exciting times / about to go in
I like the app too. It's confusing at first but has a lot of freaking cool options
@alexbuga It's a very cool app! Super responsive developer too
Thankfully it's open-beta so anyone who is even remotely interested can sign up and give it a spin or rather 'tape-scratching'
I know. I'm on the beta too, but to my shame I haven't sent any feedback so far
Is this universal?
It's very cool in lots of left-field ways, but I really want a Sir Doug video; unfortunately that doesn't come with the beta-territory (mostly
.
@touchconspiracy , yes.
I'll wait for it to come out I think..
I don't like beta testing these days, too busy lol
Yes, refreshingly cool indeed ... I can imagine Maestro Doug to be excited about it.
The 'wait' is over, FingerBeat 2.0 ($4.99) is out http://appshopper.com/music/fingerbeat
It's really is a 'stand alone' app at the moment. So no IAA or AudioBus support but it does have iCloud Drive Support (ie. iOS File/Document Picker for export only) so getting export out to AudioShare, DropBox etc works fine and for single samples there is support AudioPaste/AudioCopy for now...
Importing sounds can be done by sending files to FingerBeat using 'Open In...' from say AudioShare, I did request for native AudioShare support and It's still under evaluation, same with IAA/AudioBus...
Some of the 'issues' I've been reporting did not make it to the release-version but should be there later on...
(As an example there are still some glitches with the exported patterns, like empty leading-space and no 'trimming' for perfect loops).
Minor nags aside, FingerBeat 2.0 is a blast to use and will stay on both my iPad and iPhone as it's is simply too fun to use and mess around with, just record loads of strange stuff to the tape when and where ever, make small clips and drag them to pads for sample mayhem.
Thumbs up to all the developers behind FingerBeat, It can only get better from here on...
Yea, thank you, such a fine thing.
