Korg iM1 - user created Darwin patches - demo Korg Gadget track
Quick, 1 take, demo track I arranged live in Gadget (using mute, solo and faders) of some custom iM1 patches i've created.
You hear some slightly modified: "Small organ"(the bass), "Guitar 1" and "Organ 2".
There are 4 pads that I created pretty pretty much from scratch in iM1
The drums are samples in Abu Dhabi
Thought people might find it interesting in regard to making your own sounds and getting them into Gadget.
Comments
Thanks! I liked that. First I've heard anything with im1 that interested me
Thanks @Halftone ... the pads were really fairly quick to make - just me messing around with pretty much the first 'instruments' that loaded up.
I have revised my scepticism and now think iM1 has lots of potential for add rich, interesting audiofile-based sounds to Gadget to compliment all the other synths.
Thanks for this. Reminds me (in a good way) it's not just a matter of what sounds and notes you choose to use but also when and how you bring them in / leave them out.
What was the wash sound behind the guitar (around 2.35)?
Crying out for a girl soul singer if you happen to have one up your capacious sleeve...
Good to hear - your ideals and preferences for Gadget are very much in line with how i feel about Gadget from comments I've read ... Still not 100% convinced - but 1 step closer.
Good demo, I like the custom pads. What's the automation like in Gadget, generally? Can all the controls that are made available within Gadget be automated, including effects parameters?
Erm - i'm not entirely sure... I messed around with the "PolarChoir" patch quite a lot and made 2 of my own patches from that.
Then I made a patch with "Vibes" plus "Spectrum2"
And another with "Digital 1" plus "Voices"
It's very cool - just pick two source sounds (longer ones) - pretty much at random - and start twiddling knobs with aim to get the sound as long and as evolving/interesting as possible.
Not sure how much they will start all sounding the same eventually - but i guess we'll see.
Yes, all the basic dials you see in Darwin can be automated in the normal way in Gadget. That includes the wet/dry of both effects - but no other effect parametres (e.g. pan, depth, speed or whatever - that all has to be set up in iM1, then saved, then fed through to the patch in Gadget and can't be changed once in Gadget).
It's kind of weird having to do it across 2 apps... That might start to annoy me when in the thick of a production in Gadget... I'm thinking mainly to use it for interesting pads though - Gadget has most other things covered I think.
Really cool. The M1 sounds modern. I was wondering if the drums were M1 too and what patch they are. I take it you glitched something.
Thanks @mkell424 glad you like it...
The drums are totally not iM1 - they're a kit taken from iMachine (Static - Purist Kit).
Everything else is Darwin/iM1 though...
Cool. I take it when you used iMachine you had to extract the samples first because it doesn't have AB, IAA, Audiocopy, or export?
I hope he's got a super sekrit sneaky answer to this, because this apparent lack chokes me.
iMashine has audiobus now.
So I've got this nice thing going with the iMashine kits where I play each of the 16 pads out one by one, evenly on a template over 2 bars at 50BPM and it creates a <10 second audio file which I then trim in audioshare and put into Abu Dhabi - where it instantly creates 16 slices at the right points.
The alternative would be iFunbox I guess - then Bilbao.
Clever bugger. Two house marks (or perhaps 16 in this case...)
Didn't sound early 90s to me at all. I think iM1's getting a bad rap. Thanks for sharing, Mr. 2000
@eustressor Don't encourage them Mr. Stress, all the more for us etc.
Thanks @eustressor - that was really my aim. To go in and see how much I could bend it to my will.
So far I'd say it's good/worthwhile for rich pads / soundscapes. Not sure if I'd use it for anything else but I'll keep you updated.
great example track
Thanks @buska
That's nice Matt, I really like some of the pad sounds you've created. Food for thought, I haven't ruled out buying the iM1 yet, particularly as I've started doing so much in Gadget. Good to hear what else it can do.

Yeah, Darwin needs a 'Easy' page like iM1. Thanks for this demo.
+1 Never judge a synth by it's presets. 'Romplers' always had a place in my studio, especially if they have good modulation options for filter, pitch, amp etc.
You're welcome @R_2 - I agree with "never judge a synth by it's presets". A good example is Gadget itself, which has mostly quite boring presets IMO... There's so much more you can do with its synths.
I agree, and also think that's where Korg's development team really shines. They make it so danged easy to twiddle the presets. Nothing scary looking back at me. Now, Nave ... (runs screaming) ...
