ipad 3 & ios 8.3 .. Safe to upgrade?
Just wondering if anyones done this and is it worth it or should i stik with ios7?
my ipad will no longer connect to the apple store and the only way i can get an app on it is to buy it on my ipad air and then download it through the 'purchases' tab.
im thinking updating it might fix this problem but im worried ios8 will slow it down,.
thanks

iOS 8 will definitely slow down your iPad 3, but you'll probably get used to it to be honest. If you have an iPad Air with iOS 8 then I recommend just sticking on iOS 7 on your iPad 3!
But there are benefits of upgrading... The new Korg iM1 is iOS 8 only... So really it's up to you.
If you factory reset your iPad (making a backup first and manually backup presets/samples of your apps via iTunes/iFunbox) I think it will not install the new iOS. Someone could confirm this since I am not 100% sure. I don't think you benefit much installing ios8 for running new apps since they seem to be heavy for the " old " ipad3 . Keep in mind that Apple locked many things on 8.3 and jail breaking or running iFunbox would take some time ( they wait for 8.4 to come first) so it could take months...
You can restore iOS 7 by downloading the file here: http://www.ipswdownloader.com
then doing the shift click restore trick.
All I have is a 3 right now, sometimes I regret updating, but most of the times its fine and the benefits of ios8 seem to be worth it. If you turn off translucency, and the folder/app animations, it really makes the 3 work pretty smoothly. I'm glad I don't have to worry about apps breaking when a new update comes out or just have 50 apps in the Update queue to ignored.
on the iPad users group they said that you could not restore back to iOS 7 anymore, are you certain about this?
@kobamoto and @StarShootex - This has always been a little unclear to me, but as I understand it (and I could be totally wrong ), you can reset to Factory, which wipes all your apps and data and settings, but the iOS version is what ever you currently have on it. When you do a restore, there is an option to upgrade the iOS, but you can only upgrade to and iOS that Apple is still signing (at present I believe they are only signing back to 8.2, but I haven't checked recently). Yes, the older ipsw files are availble to download from 3rd party sites, but unless jailbraking (and here I have absolutely no first hand experience) gets you around that, you either stay with the version of iOS (7.xx) that you have or upgrade to 8.2/3 (what ever Apple is still signing) and there is no going back.
My thought for future iOS upgrades, is to do the upgrade while Apple is still signing the previous version (e.g. upgrade to 9.x while 8.3(x) is still being signed by Apple). Of course in the case of iOS 8, you could have only gone to perhaps 8.1 and still have gone back to 7.1.2, but at least get an idea of how well the new iOS will work on the borderline OLD devices. Yes, I have an iPad 3 that's still on 7.1.2. probably will stay there. I also have an iPad Air (1) that's still on 7.1.2, but I'm close to upgrading to 8.3 (waiting to see which way and when the next update is going).
@Buska - I have an iPad on 7.1.2 and it connect to the App store. As far as I know there are no versions that can't connect to the App Store. Versions of iTunes may be a different story, as I am using a Win7 PC, iTunes has always been a bit difficult with Windows PC's.
I would second @Korakios's recommendation to backup your iDevice, copy your data of of it (iTunes Filesharing and/or iFunBox/iExplorer....) and reset to factory, then do a restore (without upgrading) and put your data files back. I did this recently on my iPad Air (1) running 7.1.2 and I gained about 6 more gig of free space as an added bonus. As someone else commected elsewhere, trying a lot of apps and then deleting them, probably leaves some undeleted data that apperently iOS just doesn't cleanup when deleting an App.
Ok I think I'm going to try the backup then restore route to try and get access to the App Store back..
Might just hang out on the 8.3 update for the time being
Thanks everyone who commented
iOS8.4 is just around the corner (I'm thinking it will be released within a few weeks as WWDC is nearing).
@Samu - it will be interesting to see what they fix.
If you have the firmware downloaded, then it's possible.
Another method is this...
You can upgrade to iOS 8 then DOWNGRADE to iOS 7.
is a video which will guide through a step by step tutorial to anyone who wishes to stick on iOS 7. Good luck!
She downgrading Apple mud still be signing the OS, otherwise you're stuck on the OS you have. I was on IOS8.3 and was able to go back to 8.2 as I really needed access to my preset files through iFunbox .
Regarding 'iFunBoxing' it's way better to 'influence' the developers 'open up' their apps like Moog is doing with AniMoog.(Making it possible to use custom timbres etc. without needing to dig inside that app container).
I'm using AudioShare as my 'hub' for all sounds after it got wifi-drive the iFunboxing became less 'urgent'.
We'll have to see what iOS8.4/9 will bring to the table.
I agree. I hope more and more devs update the apps as you said.
I do agree that iFunBox is a smoother way to transfer folders and files than iTunes. (I don't even remember when i used iTunes for transferring files, I only use it to 'archive' my Apps and do Backups).
Technically it would be easy for apple to have iOS 'expose' the shared folders as mass-storage drive when attached to a computer, they already do that with the DCIM folder (Camera) when the iOS device is attached to a windows machine.
I think this coming week 'leaks' about what iOS9 will include will start to drip onto the web prior to WWDC...
@StarShootex - did you watch the video you linked to? He mentions at the end that this will only work for a short time, while the 8.0 is still in beta. And this is because at that time Apple was signing 7.1.2 and 8.0.
Apple has stopped signing 8.2 since May 4/5, so currently the only iOS version you can install on an iDevice is 8.3
