Animoog -> Thumbjam MIDI Question

I've been playing around with the good old String Ensemble patch in TJ, and am constantly amazed at how expressive it can be. However, I find that I sometimes unintentionally move one finger to another note when I didn't mean to. The player surface in TJ features note triggers that have no space between them, and sure I can widen them, but then I have to switch octaves way more often.

So I purchased the MIDI package for Animoog and tried to send MIDI from that to TJ. This works fine, and for some reason, I have the finger drift problem much less often.

But now I can't figure out how to send volume swell MIDI from Animoog (volume swell in TJ is accomplished by accelerometer and this doesn't seem to work when notes are triggered from Animoog. At least not to my ear). Sliding my finger up from the bottom of the note trigger does not cause the volume in TJ to increase like I expected.

I have enable Send Ch. Pressure, Send Poly Pressure and Send Velocity in Animoog, and in TJ I have enabled Use Chan Pressure (Vol) and Use Key Pressure (Vol). Is there another setting that needs to be toggled, or some MIDI configuration that needs to applied?

This is a really nice arrangement because you get different note volumes by using Animoog to control TJ. If I could only figure out volume swell...

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Don't know the answer @Markomatic, but would like to :)

  • Thanks @Flo26, absolutely beautiful!

  • TC-Data is a good alternative here as well. For example one can map the "Touch size" to control volume once you have setup an appropriate "keyboard".

    The midi volume expression bindings in TJ can get a bit confusing, no doubt. As you have discovered, when the preset has tilt or xaxis volume bindings, the mod wheel (CC1) can be used for volume expression. CC11 or CC7 may always be used for that as well, regardless of preset. To further complicate matters, you can enable channel pressure or key pressure for volume too, but the min vol used for those is not silence, as it is for the aforementioned ones. In general you only want to pick a single way to do it, and don't mix them, or you can get conflicts and junky results. Additionally, you may want to consider setting the Use Fixed Input velocity option so that velocity is ignored and only the volume expression affects the final level.

    Phew!

    In verifying all this I accidentally discovered that the Lydian Hexatonic scale is lovely to play the string ensemble with!

  • @moderndaycompiler- TC-Data seems like an incredible app, but it kinda scares me! Someday when I have more time I hope to investigate it further.

    @sonosaurus- thanks, that really gives me a lot to play with. And let's be totally clear... The problem is my drifting fingers. Ain't nuthin' wrong with the Thumbjam at all. TJ was one of my first apps, I think I bought it back 2009 (if that's possible). I was showing it off to EVERYBODY! In fact, TJ probably set the hook of my iOS music app obsession :)
