Newbie: GarageBand & Audio Mastering App

Hi all, I have songs in GB that I would like to run through & experiment with Audio Mastering App to improve the sound. How do I configure this in the AB chain please? As a non guitarist I love using GB Smart guitar (easier than Guitarism for me) but again, I'd like to run that through a dedicated Amp Sim, then back into GB. In future I may get a DAW but then I won't be able to use GB Smart Guitar? Thanks.

  • GarageBand only works in the output slot of Audiobus unfortunately (thanks again Apple) so you'd have to export your audio from GB and open it in AudioMastering. It works - but not an ideal workflow.

  • Thanks. After mastering do/can I export it back into GB from Audio Mastering. How frustrating is that from Apple. I suppose the answer is to get a DAW, master Guitarism & use GB for ideas only. What a waste of some great smart instruments for the non playing community.

  • Welcome, welcome, step right up :) After the first two or three hundred apps the pain fades. Promise....

  • Haha thank you. Yep its daunting but exciting seeing all those apps. Would love a month off to investigate & play. Can see what my secret stash of cash will be spent on. So much to learn & enjoy. Ps. Think I will stick with the presets on Audio Mastering for now. Brain freeze!

  • Hi Bluepunk, exporting from Garage band to Audio mastering is the best way (in a DAW also) IMO, because by recording into AM via Audio bus there's a possibility you could record some glitches on to your master. Export/ Import gives an exact copy.

And yes, you can export from GB to AM and then export the mastered version back into GB (or any other app)..

  • Thankyou RUncELL, I appreciate that. I managed to export from GB to AM. Had a go at mastering (what a difference, wow) but then couldn't find GB in the AM app settings to export it back. I must be missing something. Will retry. Have I got the correct sequence if I record a song in GB, ( I can use Smart Guitar) export to a DAW (Cubasis on wish list) for mixing/effects, then export to AM for mastering, then back to either GB or Cubasis as finished project. Thankyou.

  • might not be setting in AM to export to GB - you may have to copy to pasteboard and paste into a track in GB? can't remember how Audiomastering works

  • Thankyou, I will check again when home from work. Trying to get the order of things & whether to AB or Export or copy & paste. Just a shame that can't put GB into the input of AB. I'm not tech savvy but why did Apple, iOS, allow us to access the ease & pleasure of the AB app when GB, it's own family, can only be used as an output! Thankyou Halftone.

  • @Bluepunk They want to be the girl you go home with at night and this is their ill-fated strategy to be so....

    also @Bluepunk

Copy is indeed an option in AM. Only wav format. So you could copy a wav file in AM, and paste it in GB, indeed possible.

To copy within AM: Share File > Clipboard > Copy.

To paste within GB: make an audio track (microphone track) which is large enough; set the marker at the beginning of the track; tap on the track once; choose 'paste'.

  • Thankyou Marcel & Johnny that's great & thanks for the flow sequence. Makes it easier on my wee brain cells. I look forward to trying it all out at home (when the boss lets us leave). I've downloaded the sister app "Master Record" to learn how to warm the sound. So that I've got this correct, after I've used AM (& before copy & paste back into GB), copy & paste from AM to Master Record, edit, then from there back into GB. Thanks.

  • Hooray, all worked. GB>AM>MR>Back to GB. Thanks. Can I do the same for the individual instrument tracks (8). ie send Bass Drum Track to AM as its flabby. If so, when I Copy/Paste back into GB, do I carry out same procedure by opening the Audio Recorder every time & paste each instrument into the next empty track down for all 8 tracks. Cheers.
