No (really) good mastering options on iPhone

Someone needs to come up with a good mixing mastering solution for iPhone only iOS musicians. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 6plus and its frustrating that almost all EQ's are two point + high and low cut.

The best setup I've found so far is

Multitrack DAW by harmonicdogg (amazing recording and mixing options)
audiobus

ApeFilter << (great precision and multiple EQ points but can only adjust master/1 track thru IAA or Audiobus at a time)

AUFX:peakQ (turns out it has exactly the same two points of adjustment EQ feature as Multitrack DAW so turned out to be a waste of money even tho the interface is lovely)

AUFX:PUSH (good compression limiting options but once again only for master bus not individual track basis)

any thoughts or solutions for Non iPad Users?

I talked to Igor Vasiliev (Altispace creator) and asked if he would consider making Audio Mastering into a universal app since even in its current UI i think it could work fine on iPhone 6 and 6plus. He said he's wanted to make his apps into universal ones but reworking the UI is a lot of work...so maybe?

It would be amazing if someone could find a creative solution for people who don't want to buy an iPad or have to mix on a computer. (i travel a lot)

I've heard this complaint before from non-ipad iOS musicians and if some developer would give a full featured Mixing solution for the iPhone that would be a godsend.

  • I agree.... seems we have to wait for NanoStudio 2....

I don't know what the Howie Weinberg Mastering app can do.... seem the only mastering app for iPhone. Yep, sad story for iPhone users. I really prefer it to my iPad Air but the developers not ;)

  • Perhaps worth mentioning is also stereo designer for mastering. Together with the tools you already have it would be more or less all you get with an all inclusive ipad-suite, like final cut, or audio mastering.

  • I LOVE Stereo Designer but damn it's unreliable in Auria...

  • I use Audioshare with a finished track and AUFX apps for processing, first Push, then PeakQ, then Space. You can obtain surprisingly good results with that setup. Push isn't even that necessary. Gonna pump up that fucking bass!

Yea. I think aufx are great but you can eq or compress multiple tracks. I guess multitrack DAW two point Eq+High low cuts is going to have to do

  • Has anyone tried the Howie app?

  • Maybe Final Touch is a good all in one solution. Not sure if its optimized for iphone.

  • @Tarekith
Are you referring to this? ;-)

I was laughing pretty hard when that app was released for iPhone, especially since I don't think it's slate behind it.

  • Yea that howie app is more basic than most audio toy apps. It would be cool if final touch or audio mastering (from the altispace app creator) was made universal tho

  • Please tell me the Weinberg app is the magic 'one-knob' solution the cack-handed among us have always been hoping for....

  • The video I posted is not the iOS app, it's a video slate released on 4/1/12...which makes the howie Weinberg app that much more ironic as it's not the same people involved (as far as I know). I always wondered if it was joke based on this video.

Unfortunately no one knob mastering solution...although paying a mastering engineer could be considered "one click."

  • Anyone who'd name an app after themselves is kinda full of it

  • Honestly multitrack DAW has a great layout and works awesome. Just wish it had more mastering options. Its workable and harmonicdogg is great about listening to their users so maybe we'll see an update soon

  • The new trend -- online mastering -- such as this: https://www.landr.com/en
I'm not recommending, just pointing out there are online services. And this one has some kind of automated, instant mastering service.

Personally, I'd go with a human professional before I'd risk my precious audio to some A.I.

@Tarekith -- any thoughts on automated mastering?

  • It's stupid.

  • I guess I should expand on that some :)

I've never believed that mastering your own music needs to be that complicated or difficult. Focus your attention to making it sound exactly the way you want in the mixdown, then use a limiter to get the overall volume up. Easy (ish).

I'm not sure why anyone would spend all that time writing some music they care deeply about, and then at the very last step upload it and let an algorithm decide how it should sound. You're better off just dialing up some mastering preset in something like Final Touch and adjusting it a bit yourself to fit your music. At least then some human is making a judgement about what processing is too much.

@tarekith I agree and also I think mixing/mastering can add a lot of texture and personality, there's not one perfect way to do it. I really like to have the vocals be kind of distant sounding and crunchy while the music is more smooth and balanced sounding

@earsinn I just looked at stereo designer and that might be a really good addition. I think multitrack reverb has a widening option but it's definitely not as robust. Thanks for that

  • I spend more time reading forum posts wherein other people express concerns re: mastering than i spend actually mastering anything.

  • :-). Stereo designer is awesome. Really can bring dimension to flat sounding recordings. Thanks for that one @earsinn

Me too, and I do it for a living :)
