Swap iPad 2 for discounted iPad Mini 2 - worth it?

Hey team,

Just wanted quick feedback on this deal. I have a cool opportunity to snag a new 32gb iPad Mini 2 for $200 (full disclosure, I work for Apple) after a trade-in of my 16gb iPad 2. I am saving for an Air 2, but that might take longer than I thought and I'm just hitting a processor wall now (Borderlands, Gadget, opening any music app in less than 30 seconds). Not to mention the storage bump.

Ideally, in the long run I want two iPads for live performance/multi-screen . I know that I'm going to pull the trigger on an Air 2 at some point, but was wondering if it'd be worthwhile to trade up my iPad 2 for the Mini 2 until then, considering the processor/RAM/pixel density is much better on the latter. As far as keyboard squishing is concerned, I do have an external MIDI controller I would route through it -- so the Mini would essentially be an audio engine.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks all!

  • iPad Mini 2 is sliiiiightly less powerfull than ipad air 1

  • buy the refurb 32gb iPad Mini 2 for $300 and keep the iPad 2 as a controller (Lemur, MIDI Designer Pro, TC-Data). That is definitely worth the extra $100.

Most people really won't hit the processor limits of the Mini 2. You'll be amazed by the difference coming from iPad 2.

  • Go for both...Mini 2 is A7 64-bit..so will be nice to have for the processor intensive apps. .I'd keep the 2 for other reasons,as well. Ios 9 may help the 2 but speculation now.

  • iPad Mini 2 is amazing. Get one...

The only problem with the ipad 2 as midi controller for the mini (Lemur, MIDI Designer Pro, TC-Data) is it doesn't have bluetooth. But not a problem if you're controlling a desktop computer.

  • Like Yendor said, the mini 2's A7 chip will give you better performance than the ipad 2's A5, just on a slightly smaller screen.. worth $200 IMO.

  • I've found the iPad 2 works fine with MIDI over wifi to another iOS device. ... If you have wifi, that is.

  • I can speak to the mini's power. I have a mini 2 and everything works well with it. In fact all of the music apps from my Air 2 run on the mini.

Hmm. Good to know. Does it piss you off to use though, size-wise Vicar? Or (app-wise) are most of the most of them just fine?

    How big are your fingers?

Who are your people and where do you summer?

    :)

lol Why my people's fingers are regular sized for an adult male. :-)

I got my mini for the bedroom. There's nothing like working on some tunes before going to sleep. :) I haven't had any problems with the UI on apps being too small and I've got average sized hands. There are some apps like Thesys which are impossible to use but they are few and far between.

But you're right there is a difference in screen size. In bed I use it close to my face. It would be different however if I used it downstairs with my keyboard. It would be hard to see attached to the mic stand.

    Mini in the bedroom?

Interesting.... actually makes perfect sense....I wonder if we will live long enough to ever see Thesys in proper size.....?

I think it is a major step up from the iPad 2. I used to have an iPad 3, and my mini 2 is so much more powerful. You can listen to something I just finished using it right here:

    http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/8900/contest-entry-recorded-entirely-on-ipad-mini-2

I had no CPU or memory issues during the recording process. I am very happy with it. And the size has never bothered me.

  • @DexterTragic I listened carefully to your tune and while it's not my kind of cabbage (never got on the Rush-go-round, but many, many of my friends certainly did), I think it's an impressive bit of work. I was going to say especially if you did it on a Mini, but of course it's the apps in the end, along with your skill :) Good luck with your competition.

  • Thanks for listening, and your kind words JohnnyGoodyear...I do appreciate it!

  • Awesome, thanks for the input! I'm going with the mini -- most iPad apps worth their salt have adapted (or been designed) for a touch interface, so I'm not worried about cramping.

    thanks again!

  • I created my last track (SOTMC) entirely on my iPad mini 2.

I don't notice the difference in screen size much and often prefer the fact that it;s lighter and smaller than my iPad Air.
