Apollo MIDI over bluetooth - IPAD to MAC not working.
Hi,
I tried Apollo MIDI over bluetooth by SecretBaseDesign app today which works OK when I send midi message from MAC to IPAD, but the other way it works only with few apps like Massive or FM8, but not with Kontakt or DAWs like Logic or Reaper. Apollo Midi Input is available in all these apps, but none midi message is sent.
does anyone has any experience with it?
Thanks,
Peter

Hi -- I'm the developer for this -- and yes, hassle with OS X is a known issue (things were working fine prior to Yosemite --- I'm guessing you've got Yosemite and iOS 8? That seems like the most troublesome combination).
I've dove back into this a week or so ago, to see if any changes to the Apple system libraries, or the compilers, has fixed the trouble. I think I've got a lead on how to work around the problems, and hope to have a solution out in the next few weeks -- but for right now, it's broken (on some versions of OS X, and some versions of iOS). Apple has been doing a lot of changes in the back-end Bluetooth (this is playing a big role in the Apple watch, for example), so it's been a moving target to get things working.
Hi,
I've Ipad mini retina with ios 7 and OSX yosemite. I'm going to download a couple of hosts like Tracktion or MuLab and see if it helps. What I wonna to do is to make music on iPad and support it with some desktop VST/AU plugins to save iPad Cpu and use larger libraries (like Kontakt).
and thanks for quick replay!

and there is something else: it's not that bluetooth is not working - clicking on black button in Apollo mac app doesn't trigger any midi event either in mentioned apps (Kontakt, Logic, etc), but it works with FM8 and Massive. So I think it may not be a problem with Bluetooth but with Apollo mac app itself.
UPDATE: Kontakt is working fine now. I had to activate "Kontakt virtual input" as MIDI INPUT (Apollo MIDI input was activated before). As long as these two midi inputs are activated ApolloMacApp triggers Kontakt. Same with Reaktor ("Reaktor virtual midi" + "Apollo midi in").
Is audio over Bluetooth possible?
And I'm also hoping for a fix for iOS to Mac.
Ahh -- ok, so Bluetooth is working on your combination (there are combinations of OS X + iOS that misbehave). Do you have an IAC bus set up? This has been the most reliable way for me to get MIDI into Logic. Here's a good tutorial on setting things up:

Nadav -- audio over Bluetooth is not easily accessible to ordinary apps. The compression hardware that gets used for things like Airplay are controlled by iOS, and as I recall, there's some sort of interaction between IAA and the Bluetooth audio system, preventing it from being used. Bluetooth audio is also relatively high latency, making it non-ideal for music making.
I've got a few other apps in the Apollo series -- Apollo Remote Recorder will stream audio over WiFi. Apollo Sound Injector can catch it -- that's available for iOS, OS X, and Windows. For streaming of audio from OS X, there's Apollo Transmit. Remote Recorder has a built-in recorder (surprise!), which you can control with MIDI -- and the app also has a built-in web server, so you can record on the same device generating the audio, and then transfer the recordings to a desktop. For the Mac, Apollo Remote Sync will transfer the recordings automatically. In this batch, everything except for Remote Recorder and Transmit is free.
And I should probably mention -- I'm part of the Music IO team. Music IO will stream audio and MIDI over a USB cable, so you can go iOS to either Mac or PC. Much lower latency than any of the above, so if a wired solution is acceptable, that would be the way to go. Most of my time is going into Music IO, but I am putting some effort into Apollo MOB and the WiFi stuff -- there are some use cases where a wired connection isn't convenient.
@secretbasedesign: just yesterday I was playing around with Apollo again (Air to Air2) and noticed, that after ca. some 5minutes the Midi always was lost, when Apollo wasn't in the foreground. Once brought back into foreground, it caught up again, but I had to do this every five minutes, again and again. Air is on 7, Air2 is on 8... Just so you know, it seems consistent.
@Animal -- on the main Apollo screen, click the little gear icon -- there's a toggle switch to keep the app alive in the background. If no MIDI is flowing, and the toggle is off, the app goes to sleep to save power. (And this is the full version, right? The free test version stops every few minutes to nag you to upgrade).
If that doesn't fix it, let me know -- it's entirely possible that there's a bug of some sort, or maybe some new weirdness in iOS 8, and I'll check it out.
@secretbasedesign: Wow, that did it. Thank you so much for this fast response. (I do have the full version, just never even noticed the gear icon before). Happyhappy now!
