EIE effects loop question

Just wondering if anyone has used the EIE (red) effects loop. The real question is how that sits relative to the iPad. I assume I can inject into the return and record into the iPad, but I would also like my guitar amp to sit in the loop. Does anyone have any experience/ideas on that?

  • Are you referring to the channel inserts on inputs 1-4?

I've used them a bit. They are pre-preamp, so they are sending at whatever level is at the associated input. I believe the impedance is high (i.e., they are not designed for long, balanced runs). I've inserted guitar pedals when the associated input was the instrument level straight from my guitar. You should be able to put your guitar amp in the insert and bring a line level back into the EIE. The challenge will be having an amp with line level out (maybe the fx loop output on the amp?) and the fact that you'll still need to have power amp + cab/speaker compensation on that signal after it comes back from the amp.

That is, unless you're doing speaker sim externally. Then you can just insert that whole amp + speaker sim setup.

You need a TRS split insert cable to use the inserts btw.

  • Thanks much @Uncledig. I'm aware of the need for the split cable. The amp I plan on using has an effects loop as well as an emulated output, which I believe is line level. The output of the EIE is going into a PA. I guess the problem I'm having is where does the USB host I/O fit into this relative to the EIE.

  • The entire insert loop is pre-preamp, meaning all of the things in the loop happen before getting to the USB audio input that the ipad sees.

  • Ahh..that makes sense and answers my question. Much appreciated!

  • Cool! I love my new ICA4+, but I'm hanging on to the EIE. Best kept secret in the ios music universe.

  • Thinking about this...it seems I could take the amp send to the EIE, run through the USB output to an effects app on the iPad, return to the amp, take the amps emulated O/P to a second EIE channel and output to the PA. Does that sound right? If so, that would open up so much!

Definitely can do that. For that matter, you don't even need to use the channel inserts for this kind of thing. Assuming you are using outs 1/2 as mains to the PA, you still have 3 and 4 to use as mono outs for "fx loops". You can go:

    Guitar->EIE Ch1->iPad apps

iPad send to EIE out 3->external stuff->in to EIE Ch2->more ipad apps

iPad send to EIE out 4-> external stuff-> in to EIE Ch3->more ipad apps

As always, which iPad apps you use can affect which ins/outs you can access, but Auria is a safe bet for doing all of that.

With the channel inserts, you can do a serial insert on each of those inputs adding additional external processing to any of them. Put that all together, and it's a powerful box.

You probably know all of this, but I typed it out in case others don't.

  • I want to get my amp's pre and final into the loop, but that still sounds easy enough with how you're describing it. I knew bits and pieces, but you really helped gel it all together. Thanks again @Uncledig! I got some exploring to do!

  • Having a compensated out on your amp is sweet in these hybrid (analog/digital) guitar setups. What amp is it?

I have a Palmer PDI-03 that I use with tube amps for this kind of stuff. For a while I had a fun setup going using a Peavey Classic 30 in a setup similar to what I typed above, with the iPad in the fx loop of the amp, and then also getting the final output from the Palmer. Lots of app mangling possibilities.

    Have fun!

  • I have a Blackstar ht-5r. It tends to be a bit thin sound-wise, but I'm hoping I can round it out a bit with some iOS effects thrown in. It's certain to be fun going through the palette.

Neat. I haven't paid attention to Blackstar, but that looks like a nice combination of tubes and digital. ROCK MUSIC.

  • Just got the y cable today. Should be able to test by tomorrow...if life doesn't get in the way! My other amp is a Bogner Alchenist. I love that guy, but no emulated o/p. Not familiar with the Palmer though. How do you like that??

The Palmer is great. Kinda hard to find these days, but they're still out there. You can really push an amp hard into it and it will still sound amazing. Like a real 4x12 mic'd. Of course that means it's easy to wear out tubes with it, but I haven't done that in a long while.

That Bogner is a monster. Never give in to the temptation to sell it. I sold a Rivera Knucklehead (original non-reverb model) and I still regret it.

    My amps now are:

    Gibson GA30RVS

    Fender Vibrolux Reverb

Peavey Classic 30 (don't smirk, great amp!) :)

    Roland JC120

But lately I've been doing everything in the box with a laptop and Scuffham S-Gear or Ignite Amp VSTs. That's because I'm going a little nuts with looping and audio mangling, and it's just much easier to use a (good) VST. My ipad really plays an "external audio mangler and synth sound module" role now, so I don't even try to use any of the ipad amp sims. They are all "ok" but seriously none of them can hold a candle to that Scuffham S-Gear VST.
