Tips and Tricks ONLY - Different Drummer

Okay so only technical discussions here please. Any pricing debates can be had at the other thread, plus it might be closed soon so wanted to make sure DD owners had a place to share tips and questions.

I'll start it off.

I'm having a hell of a time just making a simple beat to support the complex rhythms that DD makes. I remember the first night I had it where I had some tribal thing going on with bells and I just felt it needed a very simple basic beat under it to tie it altogether. I couldnt do it so I just opened up beatmaker and came up with the beat that was in my head in 10 sec. This might have to be my workflow for time being until Techne gets all the wave stuff sorted.

Oh little experiment I tried. I took a Blue Notes jazz drum loop along with a 50 cent sample and loaded them in. very interesting results once you start tweaking the waves. def try to experiment with this app.

as for the scales, it only sounds cool to me when its on the actual instruments, not really feeling it on drums or sound fx

Lastly, any apps in particular that work well with DD midi out? From what I recall, it was sorta hit and miss with virtual midi.

  • see my very last post example...randomize did that

    @gjcyrus

Based on your post in the other thread, I understand that you really like the "Not Withstanding Everything Else" example which was made by the app's dev. No joke, it's an excellent piece.

Besides using an external sound module, the key to achieving that sound (as confirmed by the dev) is Digital Performer... specifically the DAW's quantize function (which will correct any imperfections in the beat from DD).

    Here's how it works:

  • I've not had chance to try it with MIDI but I had DD running in the background, opened up Sunrizer and it hooked up straight away. I think it was on track 1 - will dig deeper.

  • @JMSexton - Yeah, I just listened to it. Glad it worked out for you. I guess for myself, I don't want to rely on randomization to get a basic beat. I need to have more control over the parameters

@Solador78 - Thanks for the video! I originally read your post from Tapatalk but for some reason it doesn't show Youtube clips on there. Interesting.

@Trueyorky - Yeah, I also tried Sunrizer and the new free Novation keyboard and they all hooked up automaticallly but when I tried Glitchbreaks, nothing. I usually try to use Midibridge for any virtual MIDI stuff but doesn't seem to work with DD so won't rely on it. Can come up with some interesting stuff.

Where I'm starting to see DD in my workflow is in one of two contexts.

    1) Just coming up with random ideas and if there's something that needs a simple beat, I just use the snapshot button to save the settings (in case it crashes) and then open up BM2 to lay down a beat and record it there for use later on.

    2) If I have an existing beat or loop where I feel it needs a percussion feel. I just look at the BPM and try to match it in DD since DD doesnt have MIDI in.

Also trying to get the hand of the scales and how they relate to samples I throw in there. I like sticking in weird samples and creating weird melodies out of them but I need to have control and not have too much randomness.

@gjcyrus - I completely agree, was just throwing out the idea of randomization. I too want more control, was just noting it could be done.

Also I have gotten DD Midi to control iMini, Alchemy, Sampletank, iGrand, iLectric and haven't tried others yet. IMini did require use with MidiBridge

  • So you click the snapshot button then change a few settings. How do you go back to your snapshot?

  • It's auto saved in the wave sets.

  • Got it. Like a quick save but listed as untitled. Thanks.

  • Yes, they come in as Untitled # so you should probably Rename them fairly soon thereafter. I confess to have tons of Untitled's which leads to later going over and picking out the "keepers." I think it would be fun to be able to share presets between users.

  • FYI, worked on a video last weekend but it was 50 minutes...need to edit it down. Thanks for your patience and 1.5.1 should be hitting any day now.

  • I've used Animoog and MIDI Synth too...with the MIDI. I'm actually using Apple's Core MIDI to any "destination" that uses it, theoretically. @Trueyorky...Also considering an "Undo/Redo" function to step through changes made so you can always go back and also compare settings.

  • TIP: Did you know you can toggle a voice by touching and sweeping your finger on a wave button (release outside button)? Also you can solo a voice by touch and hold.

  • There was an update yesterday. New saw tooth waveforms I think. Any chance of MIDI clock in?

  • Nice on the sawtooth add!

  • Yeah i also dig the sawtooth waves.

Ive given up on making "normal" beats with DD but love using it with other drum apps like BM2 and the newly added drums on Alchemy. I'll usually experiment with DD til i get some cool groove, then bust out the kicks and snares on another drum app

  • I'd like a sharing community on this to see what others come up with. I've made some that I'd consider a fairly normal rhythm, but my rhythm is somewhat lacking!

  • @technemedia - Ive got a problem with syncing the tempo of DD to an arp sound in Alchemy. On DD, bpm is 120 but in Alchemy, its picking up BPM as 999. Any thoughts why?

Update just came out. You can view it in landscape mode and also copy/paste waves in other waves. Oh also new grid mode that allows you to edit specific notes. Gotta give that a try

  • The grid mode is cool you can essentially draw in the levels for each beat, in either 1/4 1/8 1/16 1/32 and the new landscape is nice

  • The grid mode is cool you can essentially draw in the levels for each beat, in either 1/4 1/8 1/16 1/32 and the new landscape is nice

  • Here's a little tip. I've started importing my own drum samples. I created one simple drum beat with kick, snare and hihat and saved it as a wave set called "Basic Drums". In order to group associated one-shots, I'll load Basic Drums, switch out the sounds with the appropriate samples, and then save it as a new wave set with a name like "Kit - Atria". That way, if I want to use a certain kit for a new track, I just start by loading the wave set for that kit and go from there.

It would be great at some point to have the ability to group samples in-app, but for now this works out fine.

  • Nice tips. Thanks for sharing.

I'll admit I don't spend as much time as I would like to on this app (or many others at this particular busy time) but it seems to me that after the previous update the default settings provided much more "normal" drum patterns and not so random.

Of course it is easy to get random beats with the several randomize features but overall I think the developer has listened to his customers for various requests that have been offered.

  • @Keebo Yeah, the default wave set on load has a basic drum beat now for at least the kick and snare.

One other thing I've figured out. If you're seeing the lines for one of the tracks, but not hearing any sound, it's most likely the quantize setting, especially if your phase is not set to 0.

  • Yea I have a Default preset, then a few others that act like sets, I really like the potential of the app and the developers commitment to constantly making it better.
