Random patch maker (for Korg Gadget). Via midi ccs.

Another crazy idea.

If a midi controller type app (like TC Data or Lemur or MidiDesignerPro) allowed you to create and send random cc values then you could send these to Gadget and make a 'randomise' feature for the Gadget synths (indeed any synth that had midi learn).

Any ideas of a 'design app' that has a random operator? Maybe something like Jasto?

Any help appreciated.

  • You're in the Lab with the boffins on this one. Let us know how you guys get on...

  • Bump...

    Anyone?

"Random" ability in an app that send OUT midi ccs?

  • TB MIDI Stuff.

  • I don't have Lemur but AFAIK it supports scripting. I remember watching a youtube video about setting control values randomly. Maybe you can make it send random cc values too

  • Or even better idea: Mobmuplat + custom Pure Data patch

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 for the current Gadgets?

I thought you did this recently with Midi Designer Pro(?) but with sliders

Are you talking about replacing the sliders with random values? I'm not at my iPad at the minute but I'm pretty sure Lemur would be able to do this as it has a fairly comprehensive set of maths functions.

Will give it a try when I get home if you like (assuming I don't get too distracted be Waldorf Attack)

  • @iamspoon thanks - i have TB MIDI Stuff. It scared me so I uninstalled it. But probably time to have another go.

@yug - thanks - but I don't have Lemur (and don't feel like spending that much money) and I think Mobmuplat would be beyond me!

@Jocphone - yes, i put together a template for Helsinki with sliders and XY pads and everything for all the parameters... but what i want it to be able to hit random and have every synth parameter adopt random settings... Just like the random button in Animoog.

I think this could be pretty cool for coming up with new sound patches. I you don't like the sound just hit random again. Or if you like it you can start tweaking from there.

  • OK @Matt_Fletcher_2000 that doesn't sound too difficult to do in Lemur. Although the trick is probably finding which attributes are most useful to randomize for each synth.

I originally bought Lemur so that I could create a useful interface for my Miniak but never got round to it once Gadget came along ;)

TC-Data does have midi CC controllers that will emit a random value. The thing is that you can not randomly choose the controller itself. So if you have say 12 controllers mapped to Helsinki parameters, setup a TC-Data patch with those 12 controllers, set them to one of the possible random triggers under Touch->Random. The Random with the down arrow will emit one random controller value when a touch is made. So if all 12 controllers where set to that, all 12 would get the same random value. If you want better control of that, then Group->Random-Touch 1 with the down arrow would send a random value for the first touch, Touch 2 for the second, and so on. You could possibly also use a table or sequence to randomize the controllers. Have not tried this but it is a nice idea you have there.

  • @Moderndaycompiler thanks - TC-Data has "random"? I didn't know that.

I see what you're saying. I'd definitely want each of the 12 to have a different value... so i'd need to click 12 times I guess.

Better if I can have a sequencer run through this for me... but i'll see.

Need to find some time to have a play... I'd have thought perhaps I could just duplicate what you describe initially, 12 times? Rather than having to touch 12 times?

  • I love the idea. I'd use it all the time.

  • This is a TBMIDI Stuff template featuring randomisation I made for the Volca Keys.
It's pretty crude but fun. global randomisation of all parameters with each press of the randomise button.

I didn't work out how to selectively control the randomise function. It seems to affect all of the controls on the page by default. You can however have multiple pages with different controls and there might be a more advanced solution on a single page if you dig around.

Btw, if anyone wants to try this with a Volca the MIDI in/out is on channel 2. (but you can change this in Edit/Page Settings)

The only other option for a single touch (which seems to be the only choice for Controller) is to set each controller to a different Random gesture like Touch Drag (long, medium, short), vary the slope response in each, etc. Then just
sweep across the screen and see what the values are. From the patch editor screen when the controller windows are not expanded and you use that test window widget, you can see the values in the unexpanded controller boxes.

Better if I can have a sequencer run through this for me... but i'll see.

I think so. And I think that is possible to do with a table even. Lots of possibilities. Hmm, those LFO's in TC-Data have a lot of what look like noise waveforms. Those could be applied to the CC controllers.

I just looked and there is really no individual per touch settings in Group Random. I now that Note On allows individual notes per touch in the Group settings. So you will need to find a way to have one single touch randomize each controller you setup. That can be done I think by try some of the tricks above.

  • @iamspoon - that's amazing!

Going to download you zip and try to retrofit to Gadget.

OK, so got it ind of working in principle in TB Midi Stuff.

It's nice because you can edit some controls to disallow being randomised (e.g. maybe the master volume, pan, pitch bend etc...)

I might create a template for, say, Chiang Mai which has a lot of controls and i'm sure could produce some craziness under the thumb of a random button...
