Sampling and signal processing in a live setup?

Hey all,
I'm not really sure where else to ask, so here I am. I'm trying to arrange a stage setup with my ipad air2. I want to be able to control(via midi control surface) vocal fx like delay, reverb, distortion, preset change, etc. But i'd also like to do some sample triggering with the controller too.

I'm having a really hard time figuring out how to make this happen. The software ive looked at and tried doesn't have the capabilities. I can't find a program that fits the bill. It doesn't seem like this is that exotic of a request - After all, isn't that kinda the ultimate draw for iOS music software? But I'm having no luck.

Anyone doing this successfully? Or anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

  • Something like

MIDI Designer Pro by Confusion Studios LLC
    https://appsto.re/gb/aA8vD.i

    Maybe?

  • I'll put that on the list of useful bits. Though to be clear, I'm looking to use a hardware controller, my keyboard, as the midi controller. Hoping to avoid touching the ipad, mostly.

If I have to sacrifice some form of functionality, then it's sampling that I'll skip. But I'd really like to be able to control vocal FX with my keyboard, via ipad software.

  • If you sacrifice the sampling function, you can use any multi-fx that accepts midi control.
You could use DFX by Fingerlab for example, it has a load of effects and deep midi learn functions.
Or you could use any good guitar FX rig (ToneStack, Flux:Fx, Jamup...) they work well on voice too.

You could always use some other app in parallel for the sample triggering

  • Excellent. I'll look at those. Are any of those FX units capable of processing two inputs independently? Two vocalists.

I've often run separate chains of apps for two separate physical inputs; I just used Audiobus and various combinations of apps. MiMiX is useful for quick control of the mix between channels etc. You can set MIDI controls for the parameters you want to adjust in whichever combination of apps, as long as they behave properly with MIDI. Turnado is one of my favourites for this.

  • Anyone else have program suggestions? hoping that there's one that's vocalist oriented, and more straightforward. Don't need 'creative' effects, just the standard stuff + midi control.

I'm not sure if any of the vocal specific apps support multiple inputs. What audio interface will you be using? That would need to support multiple inputs as well....unless you have more than one iOS device.

Just search for vocal effects in the App Store to get a listing, but I couldn't vouch for them, since I'm not much of a singer and haven't spent time with them. I also couldn't say which support midi learn, but I imagine several do.

You might also want to consider something like Auria. It isn't vocal specific, but it has some great effects built in and many that are IAPs which are wonderful. It is multi input and supports midi learn to a very deep level.

Using IAA, you could also find something to trigger your samples on a third track and be able to mix everything together.

That still may be overkill, but in the end, it might be a better solution since you're talking about a second vocalist, which rules out many of the other options.

  • You might check out tonestack. It allows two discreet signal paths and has extensive MIDI control.

There are lots of apps that sample. Do you want to sample the vocals in realtime and mess with them or do you mean triggering ore recorded samples?

  • Two mics & usb midi running in through a focusrite itrack dock. The hardware is there, just need the software. My searches on the app store for vocal programs left me wanting. None that i looked at had midi capability, and I looked at quite a few.

Part of why I'm so picky here is that the other vocalist isn't strong with music software, and I don't want to overwhelm him with obtuse, fiddly stuff. I spent some time running him through Cubasis, which turns out to not have midi learn(wtf...), and pushing another complicated suite on him may ruin his interest in the endeavor. I can handle the back-end stuff, I think - audiobus, the in-between programs - but the it would be nice to simplify whatever he ends up dealing with.

Thanks again for the great tips so far.

  • Triggered pre-recorded samples, btw. no real time sampling needed. Just want realtime delay/reverb/chorus/distortion control.

  • Hey all, an update: For the moment, I'm using Vocalive to do the job. But it has a number of significant issues. No vocal distortion, can't control the program's bpm via MIDI, switching presets doesn't update all the fx settings(!!), and it only takes one input signal(to my knowledge). It's not a big list of problems, but they're big problems.

Anyone know of a vocalist-oriented fx processor suite, or some other mostly self-contained system that could compete with Vocalive? Or run alongside it to handle the second vocalist's input? The near-comprehensiveness, presentation and control scheme is good enough, and works for live vocals in a way that 'creative effects units' that I've tried don't. But my end goal of stage-processing and control for two vocalists still isn't met.

  • Go buy vocalive for iPhone. It is a separate app that can run parallel to your current vocalive setup. It should work, though I haven't tried it.

  • I have a mobmuplat patch that does some of these things. I built it for live looping but it also has drums wich are just wav files you could replace with any sample you'd like. I've been working on a big update for it lately but the current version sounds like it could suit some of your needs.
