haQ attaQ 66 - About RAM memory (iOS 7 vs iOS 8)
About RAM memory and why we iOS musicians need a LOT of it. I am also comparing iOS 7 and 8 in terms of "resource hogging".
Comments
Don't forget that the 'retina graphics' use more ram(double up) and iOS8.3 is way better at handling and flushing ram when it needs it.(It only makes sense for iOS to use as much ram as possible to speed things up and release it when apps need it and that's what's happening in the background).
iOS9 will further improve this by simply dumping resources that are not needed for the app on the platform it's running on (so no 32-bit code on 64-bit devices and no 'retina-resources' on non-retina devices and no 64-bit code on devices that can't run it, those things will not even get installed).
Once you start pushing 'memory intensive' apps on iOS8.3 you'll see that it manages a lot better than iOS 'old whatever' did. iOS8.4 (will be available on 30/6) will add some speed and once iOS9 hits we'll gain back storage space and ram too.
Great video as usual Jakob! I can't wait for iOS 9!
@Samu i was hoping to get a discussion going with this episode so thank you very much for your input! I appreiciated it a LOT!
I really hope iOS9 will be optimized and use less RAM.
@TGiG Thank you!
Usually I'm never one of the first to update with new iOS versions, but I kinda got the new iPad for stuff like that so that I can show everyone what's broken and what's working good.
Thanks for the app recommendation jakoB and toz, was gutted to lose memory when I upgraded, I've read ios 9 is going to be like osx 10.6, where everything gets optimised instead of having a load of new features, am looking forward to it.
Great vid. I'm still on 7.1.2 on a retina 2. I like to get a drum synth and a couple of other synths going at once in Cubasis so I can MIDI sequence while I program patches (so I can adjust patches and tracks for a while to get things working together before I bounce to audio) and things can get glitchy quite quick with some of the heavier duty synths (nave for example). Based on your vid I'm not sure if 8.3 would make this better or worse... Any thoughts , as I was thinking of upgrading to 8.3 this weekend?
Thank You @jakoB_haQ !
@Xen I missed your comment and saw it just now.
Did you "jump the gun" and install iOS 8 yet?
When it comes to multiple synth apps in a live session then what's important is processing power.
However if your using drum instruments and drum machines that are sample based then RAM is also important.
Nave is a very heavy beast and I was able to get stutters when running Nave together with DIODE and a few fx apps just now. I'm uncertain of what advice I should give. I'll probably know more if I can spend more time with my new platform.
Feels like a new device.
@jakoB_haQ
No, I didn't in the end. I keep thinking I will, but everything is working and I'm in the middle of a few tracks so I don't want to disturb things. I'm almost at the point where I feel I should wait until iOS 9 now.
Apart from being able to buy a few more apps that I don't really need I'm not really sure if I'd gain anything at this point.
