SidTracker Issue?
This has happened to me a couple of times and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not. I record one voice and then a second voice and sometimes a third voice. No problem. Everything works as expected. However, if I stop playback and then start again voice two or three may not play back unless the preset assigned to that voice is chosen and I tap the keyboard. Then it will play back fine until I stop playback. When I hit play again there is no sound from that voice. Has anyone else seen this? This is on an iPad Air 1 with 8.3.

@anickt I've had the sound 'stop' a couple of times but I've not yet nailed precisely on what causes it so it's hard to do a 'step by step' to reproduce the problem. It helps to just play any sound on the track has issues (i.e. doesn't make any sound). I do however strongly suspect it's multiple sounds trying to use the filter at the same time.
@Segerfalk Do you guys have any ideas why sometimes some a track go silent and need to be played a note on to 'come alive'? (For me this 'randomly' happens after step-editing a track and starting playback even with sounds that do not use the filter).
Is there a way to set the FX-Track filter setting to affect voice 1,2,3 or 'all' or a combination of voices?
I can think of a few things that might cause this like 'hanging' value-counters or other emu/simulation related issues, maybe the 'SID-Engine' needs to be 'reset' before song-start to avoid this?
And well, I found a UI-Glicth too (Font/Type related)
If you open the song 'Escape From Malmoe' the instrument name 'Flöjt' is correctly shown in the list but once selected it no longer reads 'Flöjt' (see the picture).
@anickt @samu
I strongly suspect you have the same trouble as I answered earlier. Try to disable "follows keyboard" in settings, because this assigns filter control to whichever voice you have the cursor in and overrides the other settings.
@firejan82 said: I'm really confused by this FILTER CTRL VOICE thing. I can't make it do what I want it to do. I had it working once I don't know how I did it.
The key is in the settings. Default is the rightmost selector = "filter ctrl voice". This can be overridden by Follows Keyboard voice = gives filter ctrl to the selected voice. This is mainly for live performance and can confuse you by stealing the filter control if you select a filter sound and start playing live in another voice.
For recording you want to enable "tracker rec" which sets the filter control voice in the aux pattern. Did that make any sense? I will cover this in a tutorial also.
.
Also important! When you use an instrument with a filter on a channel that doesn't have filter control, and there is no instrument used on the channel with filter control or an instrument with the filter off, then you will hear nothing as there is no filter values that can be fed to the slave channel. This is exactly what you're experiencing when there's no sound.
Sorry if it's messy, but that's the woes of having only one filter for three separate voices, and for us staying true to the orignal design - otherwise we'd lose real c64 export.
Advice:
I'd suggest enabling "tracker rec" in the settings if you intend to use filter sounds in several voices. Then filter ctrl settings will be automatically recorded in the FX pattern when you change voice. You also edit these manually.
If you're only using one voice for filter sounds, stick to the default 1, or change in the settings.
Follows keybord use is for live performance.
@Segerfalk 'Follow Keyboard Voice' and 'Tracker Record' were among the first settings I disabled since I like to be in charge of what runs thru the filter and in the settings I've set voice 1 to filter control voice. Also I set poly to one and no 'cycle'.
So even with Keyboard follow turned off and filter control voice set to 1 the filter is still 'turned on' when I play a 'filter sound' on the other voices (2 & 3) when they should in fact not be filtered since filter control is set to voice 1.
As an example...
If I have 2 different 'sounds' that have filter settings and use them on voices 2 & 3 and set the 'Filter Control Voice' in fx-track to 3, shouldn't that effectively disable filtering on voices 1 & 2? All 'sounds' that have 'filter settings' are still filtered, but the 'filter-value' is controlled by the sound on the voice set in fx-track but there seems to be no way to select which of the 3 voices gets filtered only the sound/voice that controls the filter?!?
It's good to have the option to select which voice controls the filter but it's equally important to have options to control what voices are filtered (ie. on/off for bits 0,1,2 @ $D417 no need for bit 3 since there is no external input).
I know I'm too nerdy sometimes
You got it wrong. Filter control decides which voice has the power to control filter cutoff, res and modes. Filter on/off is set in the instruments only. We did it this way to make it more synthesizer standard-ish. But also so you can make a voice control another voice for side-chain-ish effects. So, if you want to have filtered and unfiltered versions of the same instrument you have to make a copy and disable the filter.
bit 3 since there is no external input).
Yep, but you have to do it with copy/paste instrument. I think you already lost 99.9% of the forum members by now
It's been a compromise between usability and nerdability, and this is where we're at right now. SidTracker 64 will continue to be developed, and there might even be power user modes in the future where you can insert your own data tables, but for now, you''ll have to do without.
Haha, remember, we made this app.
@Segerfalk Got It! Thanks for explaining the logic behind the compromises.
As some have mentioned a 'linear-mode' for the knobs would be a welcome addition and I guess there is already an update in the works with many of the 'before-release' requested features.
Another feature that might come in handy when memory-loss strikes is 'Auto-Save' or 'Resume Last Session' when starting the app. If the app is hidden and iOS needs to flush some RAM the work in SidTracker 64 is lost.
(The same is true if one double taps on the home button and swipes up to close the app).
So far no 'crashes' so high points on the stability of the app
@Segerfalk
Thanks for the info. Makes sense. +1 for Samu's requests especially auto-step. Great app!
I had that happen once by accident as I was trying things. It sounded pretty cool. I'll have to figure out a cool way to utilize this awesome feature.
@Segerfalk Will SidTracker 64 be able to export 'seamless' loops in the future? There is some silence in the beginning of the exported files and 'trimming' is needed to make them loop perfectly. Could it be that the 'silence'(roughly 1800 samples) is added when decoding the file from m4a to something else?
Using SidTracker 64 is totally awesome now that I've got the hang of the logic behind the compromises.
Thanks for the feedback! And glad you like it. :-)
1800 samples is most probably because of the "hard restart" at the beginning of each note. When hard restart is on, there will be a short silence at the beginning of every note.
I didn't think of this case (silence at the beginning of exported audio file) to be honest, but it will be an easy fix in future updates.
@DanielLarsson Thanks! Now I'm just for fun looking after 'easter eggs'(Hidden tap-zones are among the hardest to find haha). Saw some *.sid files, 'left-over graphics' and some other interesting files when I dug a bit in the app-bundle
Yo, so is this thing a beast to program or nah>? IT looks deceptively simple... yet crazy cool. Whats the 411 on this app. Love it?
@oceansinspace It can be almost as complex as you want it to be especially once you start building your own tables to control wave, pulse and filter. Most of all it's really fun to play around with
