IOS Live Performance (in front of people)
So I've been quiet with posting lately due to real life happenings. Anyhow, my band Fleksi performed at a local Festie and I thought I'd share it with you. Not much to see here (iPad screen-wise) as the camera points from the side. Also it came out more guitar less synth and tricks but I haven't practiced this set in ages so played it safe, short and snappy. Also having only 30 mins slot doesn't help.
Also the video suffers from vibro turning syndrome so towards the end there's only the drummer in the picture. We have another 2 events booked in the next 2 months so I'll definitely post more.
Cheers

Nice!
yeah, like what you did man
What? No 5 camera shoot with a live director? As a sound engineer, it is good to see amps up on off of the ground to help keep stage volumes down. Live is good fun man.
You've got a nice sound, and a tight infectious groove going on there supadom.
Awesome stuff!
That was groovy ... Does your drummer (quite good, BTW) have any triggers tucked away back there or is all the extra sound coming from you? Either way, nice job, thanks for sharing
Nice music!
Thanks guys. I had so much more ready for those tracks to show off samplr, turnado and sunrizer but I had light coming in at a dodgy angle so didn't trust myself overdoing on-screen stuff. @eustressor no, no hidden mind controlled triggers
. All coming from me. The drummer really is only playing on top. He couldn't hear me much so his dynamics are a bit flat but to be honest so are mine. He had a click in the earphones though, which pretty much saved the situation.
Cool beans - any gigs in Wales?
I think that petrol money and eager audience would do it @monzo
Funky
We've just had a festival here this weekend which would have been a good one for you, but I'll keep my ears open and let you know if I hear of any possible gigs
Sounded great @supadom, I really enjoyed the music in those clips. Where are your upcoming events?
That was great @supadom. Great sounding, great to see people using iOS devices live, and great that you took the time to share.
Nice work Wojtek. I'm assuming you're using Loopy?
when peeps say your a hipster just say yeah and it sounds sicker than your synth✌
or looper
or i say watch my ipad not crash! of course im nice and stuff but i love the anti ios peeps! fluk em
my mac has crashed 2 ce live . ipad not yet!
Grass, canvas and all the tech you can lay your hands on, FUNKY!
?? @oceansinspace categorising people didn't get anyone anywhere, just look at history.
And what do you say to people? Blame it on your mama?
Apologies, my reply was rude. The truth is both of us have very small kids so being a hipster is out of question, no time for grooming here
Hey @Vecoto I don't know where you are but currently we only have 2 shows booked in mid August. 2 smallish local things (Oxford Elder Stubbs Festival and Grimsbury Festival which I have no idea about). I need to harvest some more footage for promo etc. also get the set more interesting before going bigger.
Yeah @Ben, same old really. Loopy, samplr (the golden duo) with sunrizer and turnado. Simple but very powerful set up IMO. All IOS 8.3 on a mini. I'm getting some very rare glitches when I jam at home (possibly mostly from Turnado) but I reckon it's worth the risk. I'm not planning to play Jules Holland anytime soon anyway.
Oh sweet, I'm pretty local to Oxford, so I might be able to catch one of those shows. Will let you know
First off; didn't know Flo had his own fest. Not surprised. Bit irked I didn't get a pass.
Secondly, and with my usual bullshit to one side, very cool. Hear a lot of Winwood in the second piece.
Thirdly: Good to see you taking it out on the road and making it pay.
I loved the build up at the end, good way to finish the show, both seemed very relaxed too, I was wondering though in places whether your drummers ponytail was real or a clip on.
I think the ponytail is that something behind him. I can see where it came from though @mister_rz I won't be able to watch this again without that mental image. Also come on, we're hipsters, remember? The set was totally unrehearsed other than me having loopy speeds set for each song and samplr sets to mingle with. So the last tune was basically played after i was told 'you have 4 mins for the last song' by the organiser, so I just went with the jammy one. I'm glad I did.
@JohnnyGoodyear taking it out on stage is crucial to me. I get bored with bedroom music very soon and there's no better motivator than a good crowd to give the sets that extra punch. I heard of Winwood but never his actual music. Will give it a try.
That makes me like it even more, it can go pear shaped when your just ad-libbing, but the vibes were great, especially with the ending.
I've been interested in using iOS in a live setting (I've done a teeny-tiny bit of solo gigging years back), if only for the portability. The trick is how you present it to the audience.
'How you present it to the audience'
In a form of music?
Just kidding @Brain. I don't see it very different from the guy with the looper. Ed Sheeran, KT Tundstall, Feist and Beardyman are doing it without a hitch.
My guess is that it definitely helps if you play a traditional instrument in addition to the electronic part. I, personally wouldn't do it without the drummer who adds the visual element.
I was just thinking recently while watching a pretty average salsa band how despite the music, having 20 odd people on stage, provided for a lot of visual candy as it was. Not that it is of utmost importance, but thinking of differences between listening to the music at home and live, meeting the artist face to face is not to be overlooked. So is seeing how They go about doing what they do, which can be tricky with someone smudging their iPad with their sweaty finger.
I sometimes wish I had the opportunity to have my iPad's screen capture projected in the background of the band.
I've thought about exactly that tbh... not that ive ever played live.
Would be pretty straight forward wouldn't it? (Maybe not at an outdoor venue though!) - but you just take a mirror of the display and project it. I guess you'd loose the ipad's lightening socket.
Or you put a camara on a tripod and film above the ipad (probably better cos you could see you hands at work).
There are some lovely looking apps you could use for different tracks (e.g. TC data, Orphion, Samplr)... I think people would be interested in seeing that.
