Effect Tails

Hello all. I'm just starting to use the iPad to create loops to import into Ableton. When I mix down in Cubasis it asks me if I want to include the effect tail.

I know with linear editing you make loops with effect tails work by alternating tracks. But what about loop players like Ableton? Is there a way to make this work or should I avoid them all together? Thanks.

  • I get heavy effect tails in the end of my gadget tracks, especially if I use tons of delays..wish I could get rid of them

Hi mkell424, when I export loops (on any device/software) I solo the track and export what's between the 2 locators.. including the fx decay. I then re-import (in your case to ableton or cubasis) and set the 2 locators to your loop -ie 2bars and cut the tail at the end of the loop and drag it to a new track and to the start of your loop. Now the fx tail is at the start of your loop and should sound natural when looping. bounce again if required.

I don't use 'include fx tail' option because it exports the whole track and the way just described will give you more control. Hope that makes sense btw.

  • Thanks RuCell! So if I get your idea if I trigger my clips during a live recording in Ableton, I go back and chop the FX tail of each triggered sample and put it on a new track?

Sorry mkell, I don't use Ableton but I understand it triggers loops/clips, So it would be better to prepare your loops in Cubasis first.
For one loop you will need to export 3 versions - 1 with no tail at start - a second with tail at start - then a third with tail at start and end.. And when you trigger these in Ableton loop 1 is to start, loop 2 the middle (when repeating loop) and trigger loop 3 to end.
