How to sell your soul

A quick hypothetical question. Not trying to stir up any ethical debates but generally speaking, how would you sell your gear to maximize your return CASH profit? Not talking about trading in.

Go to a weaselly mega-corp like GuitarCenter here in the U.S.

Go to the slimey scaly Pawn "stars"

Or go to our typical down and out but good ol blokes at the local music shop

What would you do to get the cash?
Thanks!

  • Craigslist or EBay? I'm more of a hoarder, so I can't speak from experience..

  • eBay is great but not so much for full stacks or drums.

I have friends that had someone try to rob them while selling gear on CList so I'm good on that

  • Sugar daddy.

  • Didn't mean to sound rude @NoiseHorse what you said is true. I'd use eBay for 99% of my gear.

  • You can expect to get around 10% of used value at GC, or pawn shop.

  • I very rarely sell anything, but if I do I usually try to get a part exchange against buying new gear at a local music shoppe.

  • eBay first choice.
    Craig's List second.
Local music shop as long as it is not Guitar Center or Musician's Fiend.

  • Craigslist or local places might work if you get the right deal and get the money up front.
Guitar Center gives you about the same as a Pawn shop.
Pawn shops give you 1/3 of the value of the item.
Ebay takes 10% of your sale.

I recommend considering Reverb.com (Reputable and takes only 3%) or going local.

  • I've mainly used sos online marketplace, gone to a few people's houses and had a few people come round to drop stuff off or pick stuff up and they have all been cool and into their gear, or used ebay, find I get slightly more from specialised market places though.

Don't forget forums and classifieds in the newspaper! I've had pretty good success with craigslist... I saw someone get $30 for their Yamaha SY35 at a pawn shop recently, really couldnt believe that was all! I'd try Craig's List and meet at a police station. Just make sure you have a place to plug in!

This sounds so goofy, but has the whiff of savant brilliance about it :)

  • I'm never offended. I'm disoffendable. But I am wanting to see @TGiG plug in his Drumset!

Thanks! (I think...). I've purchased and sold on Craig's List...I've had my concerns and usually approach with caution.

There was a CL murder around here and a neighbor who is a policeman on the case suggest that it to me... Thought I'd pass it on if someone is uncomfortable selling... your taxes are paying for it anyway, so might as well make use of it! If I was selling something expensive/ valuable I'd do that or a public place. You'd probably have more visibility on eBay though!

  • I assume that's a 220 volt.

If it's not an amp or whatever (like the original problem) I try to do it at a cafe, via Craigslist. When it needs to be at my house, it's never in my music room. I bring whatever it is into the living room and play dumb.

  • Another vote for Craigslist and ebay, I've made a much better return selling gear that way. NEVER sell it to a place like a pawn shop or Guitar Center, you won't get squat. By far the best is ebay when you're willing to ship overseas, though obviously that brings some risks too.

  • Vemia is a specialist synth auction: www.vemia.co.uk which now redirects to http://www.spheremusic.com/Index.asp?Origin=Vemia — I used them about 14 years ago to sell my Roland TR-808 and Korg SQ-10, MS-10, MS-20.

  • In my town, someone has started a Facebook page called "mytownname_yard sales". It is a closed group that you have to join before using but then you can post your items for local viewers. It's pretty sweet and I have sold a lot of stuff this way. You might try searching Facebook for something like that in your area.

  • So given that we consider our iPads as gear (I do) what say ye when it comes time to trade in/resale?

  • I just got a new iPhone and then sold my old one via the above mentioned yard sale group. I assume there is a similar demand for iPads. Return kinda depends on model and memory and the sale is much easier and faster if you price it competitively.....

  • I've bought and sold iPads on eBay. Be sure to look at the seller's feedback and other item's for sale

Buddy for real? Is that supposed to be funny? you only joined last night and immediately post that horrible link. Sorry to say this but I think maybe you are in the wrong forum mate!

edit: This thread name needs to be changed as it may have sent your sense of humour into overdrive, I am in no way religious but that link is disturbing.

  • Just sold all my hardware stuff on ebay. Did pretty good. My sampler cost $50 to UPS it because of size and weight but still got more than if took to local reseller
