Beathawk update - June 26 2015
A few different bits and bobs, probably more 'optimizations' than anything BUT:
-User Library now supports sub-folders (YAY)
-File Import/Export via iCloud/Dropbox/Google Drive/Onedrive (YAY also)
Every app seems to have it Area of Weakness and (for me) BH's file organization/clarity doesn't match its functionality, so some of this, while perhaps still a work in progess, is a step in the right direction...

check it out now
@BastienCo For the record, have updated and rebooted etc, and I get an immediate crash when I go into 'Browser' and then select 'Browse to Pad'. Kicks me straight out of the program. (Air 1/8.3)
Thanks for the report, I'll look at that now
Works fine here, Air 1 / 8.3.
Nice to see folders -- though I don't know how to put already recorded samples into folders. Any one tried this? It is either very tricky or I need another coffee.
Yup, a good explanation of the HOW of new functions is always a good idea. I'm sure it's simple enough, but Lord knows some of us is also....
It seems to happen when you do "browser to pad" on an empty pad, can you confirm ? if so, this will be fixed in 1.1.1
Exactly. OK. Thanks. Good to know. Interested in your answer to @Nick above. Forgive us with our simple questions, but we are enthusiastic and want to make the most of your work
Can you create user drum kits?
Sweet! We now have iOS-FilePicker support in BeatHawk. For AudioShare-support just select locations -> more and and enable AudioShare and drag it to the top.
Both Import and Export works like a charm, I'm happy
@BastienCo Might it's good idea to clarify that the 'iCloud - Import File & iCloud - Export File' is actually the iOS-Filepicker since there is no need to even have iCloud Drive activated to use the feature. And congrats as being one of the first developers to get iOS-FilePicker 'baked in', I'm sure many more will follow
Ah, I learned stuff from esteemed geek/FilePicker champion @Samu
I understand that, because of all the hard work, the features devs add seem obvious and simple to them, but to ensure that users enjoy/profit from this hard work as much as possible it's always worth remembering the rules of the music hall comedian:
-Tell them you're going to tell them a joke.
-Tell them the joke.
-Tell them you've told them.

Regarding moving files, there is nothing yet, we wanted to have some feedback and suggestions before going too far, we were thinking of doing a Copy/Cut/Paste to be able to neat your space.
Not at the moment, but we think about it..
@Samu
Thanks, I hope apple will implement multiple file selection though..
I would much prefer long press on a file, then drag and drop into a folder
or, an "edit files" mode that then allows drag and drop
first option preferred though!
After the update IAPs no longer appears in the list so it is not possible to purchase any packs
@BastienCo At least when importing from AudioShare it's possible to import complete folders which is good enough for me
We'll have to wait and see what improvements we get once the iOS9 SDK is 'final'.
I have a feeling they will be motivated to fix this
@BastienCo It would be very useful to pinch to zoom the waveform of the sampler. I usually record a loop or something, and isolate hits on each pad.
I love the implementation of iCloud Drive, finally someone make this :-) I hope Auria is the next...
@Korakios you can effectively create your own kit by making a new project, load your samples into the sixteen pads, make whatever edits you need to the sound, and save the project. Whenever you want to load this kit into a project, load the project then load the "kit" with the "kit only" option rather than project.
If you have AudioShare you can import whole folders in using the, "iCloud - Import File" option or choose individual files (which creates a long list of samples which can't be put into folders).
@Sinapsya Couldn't agree more! It helps to be a little pushy for new technologies because sooner or later they will be implemented and when they do people think why hasn't anyone else done this yet? Honestly I feel it's the 'fear of loosing pre-iOS8 customers' that keeps most developers from fully implementing it...
Can someone with the Vintage Blues Guitar IAP see if they are also experiencing really slow load times for the Vintage Guitar Loop instruments (the ones that have multiple loops that play a different loop on each key)...like -60-Slow-Blues-Main.
These instruments start with a dash (-) in the Vintage Blues IAP....I don't have any other instruments that start with a dash...and I'm not having this issue with anything else....not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Thanks,
Dexter
@DexterTragic I can confirm this. I tried a couple and measured the last -060-Slow Blues-Phrases which took 30 seconds to load and then a further ten seconds to exit to the pitch screen. Air 1/8.3.
@BastienCo Just to take things a step further: AFTER running the test above and closing BH and then later deciding I would do some work with the app I tried to open it....it hung on the splash screen for ten or fifteen seconds and then kicked me back to the 'desktop'.
Double-clicking revealed the app in the background, I brought it back up inside the app, but it was locked up, no doubt trying to load -060-Slow Blues-Phrases I had loaded (slowly) last time.
I closed down and rebooted, but the same happened when I tried to open BH. So now I can't load it. Of course I could delete the program and re-install, but I don't want to lose the considerable amount of work I have in there etc.
Any ideas?
If on the top left of the browser it does say "Refresh" or any message, just wait, beathawk is indexing the packages.
If there is no message at all try to go to Beathawk documents from iTunes on your PC/MAC and delete beathawk.db, then restart the app. Tell me if this changes something.
Guitar package contains multi sampled instruments with loads of samples that cannot be streamed because they use a stretch oscillator.. That is the reason why it takes this long.. We made the choice to have better samples quality, the price to pay for that is long loading.. This may load faster along side we improve our API.
This is not nice indeed... (You can do a backup from iTunes from your PC/MAC before reinstalling), try remove that beathawk.db and tell me if something changed.. (it wont make you loose any data, it is just index)
Another thing that comes to my ming is that when you close the app the last session is saved and is restored on startup - you said you use guitar samples that are heavy so it might take a while.. I'll check that on my side.
Thanks for your suggestion, we are thinking of doing some sample editing like this, I can't tell what is planed and for when though..
@BastienCo Regarding 'sample-editing', I think a zoom (down to sample accuracy? Current seems to be 10 samples when zoomed), a basic trim and normalise would be a good start, preferably done before saving the sample. Naturally it should be possible to trim & edit previously recorded samples too.
I do like the way it's possible it's possible to re-use the samples and just play back different parts, optionally it would be nice to be able to save a 'selection' as a new sample.
There also seems to be a 'glitch' in the sampler/recorder, because after sampling/recording the pad has the new 'sample name' but the sample is not loaded? (Ie. need to go to the browser and 're-load' the sample that is already assigned to the pad).
I feel the 'pad' just points to wrong location/path because as I recall there was no 'Records' folder in the earlier versions?!? (This is where the user recorded samples are saved to in the latest version).
Not to forget, when using external USB-AudioDevice it would be really, really handy to have a 'monitor' feature in the recorder so it would be possible to monitor the input prior to sampling/recording.
A 'reverse button' to temporarily play the pad-sound in reverse would be a nice touch, this could also be recorded into the sequencer...
So many apps so little time
Let me just get a refresher.
Syncing BH with Cubasis is only via IAA?
BH can't sync with host start via Audiobus?
I reinstalled in last week and forgot how I used to do this. I also had to delete some IAP to save space.
Can you remove individual sounds at all or just whole collections? I tried to no avail.
THANKS
The first few "instruments" in the V_Blues pack are an issue. Have been from day 1 for me.
I ditched them to save space.
Sidenote -- ALL Of the samples seem to be loading a touch slower after this update. (for me)
Anybody using Midiflow to sync clock tempos between apps when using AudioBus? Since Cubasis can only send MIDI Clock, I am interested in anyone doing the above with Cubasis in the output slot.
Yes, I think this IS a function of the more recent function to load 'last session' (which generally I like . It is loading the last session and the last session had the long blues sample BUT it's not just a matter of waiting, it waits, thinks, falls over, kicks out....
Unfortunately (first world problem alert) we have arrived in Maine for the summer/vacation and OF COURSE my last proper back/iTunes etc is at home in Austin. "I'll travel light," I said. "I won't take that big Alienware laptop this time," I said.... Ah well....
I guess I can just delete the whole thing and start afresh and then re-install from the back-up when I get back to Texas in six or seven weeks....probably won't write any masterpieces between now and then
Problem's a little frustrating, but I appreciate your attention and am pleased that you are still engaged not just with this community but with the app itself. BH is a little different from the rest of iOS world at this point and I like that....
@BastienCo As it is now possible to create folders inside BeatHawks's 'User Library' it would only make sense to add a pop-up menu (below sample name) to the 'Save record as..' dialogue where an available 'Destination Folder' for the sample could be selected. This is purely a request to make it easier to keep things organised...
(This would probably also eradicate the 'bug' mentioned above where that pad has the name of the newly recorded sample name but the 'path' is wrong as there is a need to reload the sample).
For 'Moving/Deleting' multiple files there could be a 'select files' check box on top of the file list. For single files I'd prefer the 'iOS Method' ie. Hold down the finger until the file starts to 'wiggle' and then move it to it's destination folder. I do like the 'double tap/tap' menu, it's very quick to use and I'm very happy about the fact that iCloud/FilePicker is 'first option' instead of AudioCopy
Sampling related settings could be stored in 'Preferences...' menu to avoid cluttering the UI.
Few setting that comes to mind is
Guess I should get some IAPs to show my support for BeatHawk
@BastienCo Was just importing a (short) vocal sample into the library. Was told the sample was successfully pasted, clicked on the User Library and was presented with the choices/directory tree in the photo below, but there was nothing in the library. I closed/re-opened and this went away and only the user library remained. You might want to take a look etc.
