Micswap Pro - thoughts ?
I'm intrigued by this, I've bought the basic version, but I'm finding it a bit feature limited to real get a feel for it. I'm thinking it may be interesting to play guitar through. Is latency an issue etc. ?
£14.99 is a bit of a punt just to try something out.
'Mr Googear', I've seen that you use this, any knowledge is appreciated.

@Igneous1 I have had no problems with latency etc. I like this app, but it is relatively spendy. All I can say is that having done the spending I am happy to have it and use it most of the time I connect my Apogee.
Cheers for that, any thoughts about the environments ? I presume they make a noticeable difference ? (I couldn't really tell from the cut-down version)
I think they're good. Subtle (as they should be) but not TOO subtle. Do you really need this? Do I get the feeling that with all the darn effects choices I have I could create my own AB saved settings etc? Yes, I could, and do sometimes. But this STILL feels like a good base. And I like the little recording system inside as well, but that's another matter....Do accept however that most of us who warble (if not actually sing) are subject to the juju feelings and anything that seems/feels/might make a difference/makes us feel more comfortable is very welcome if not thereafter absolutely essential
Cheers again, perhaps it's just one of those things I've (half) convinced myself would be useful, when (for the same price), I could get Module's 'Ivory' piano instead.
@Igneous1 I guess the question there would be how many pianos do you have already
I am also thinking about buying Micswap pro. For my 'singing'. Expensive indeed. I have a Samson Studio Condensor Mic C01 with I connect via a Tascam device and Sonic Port to my iPad. Not bad sounding, but a bit noisy. Would Micswap pro improve things in this setting I have? Would Micswap Pro be better when I skip the Samson and only use the iPad internal mic? Thoughts about this?
@Marcel My honest answer is that I don't know. I certainly don't know about the Samson, but if it's decent and you get a decent sound it's probably good enough. The biggest single difference for noise I've found is taking a noise print of a typical part of a noisy bit of the file and then running noise reduction (carefully, don't overdo it) through Audition.
I also know that any of us who can or are trying to sing wish for the magic sound or solution to make everything right, when a bit more practice and bit more confidence (and maybe a better melody will help us more than anything else.
For all of that; I like MicSwapPro
@JohnnyGoodyear Thanks for giving it a thought. Good idea about the noise cut via Audition, I have Audition and I know what you mean by the noise reduction process. Done it once with a noisy record but wasn't happy about the result, but perhaps I overdid it. Can try it with my vocals, good idea.
And you are right about the magic solution we wish. It doesn't work that way. Django Reinhardt had , what was it, two fingers left, and still managed extremely good with it. Too tired to explain and explore this association, but it has an anology - I think with my tired brain. Going to sleep now. Thanks again for your thoughts.
@Marcel I understand your Django idea perfectly and you are right, of course BUT STILL we want to give ourselves every advantage. I do know that I sometimes listen to previous vocal tracks and think they are far better (sound quality) than I ever did at the time. We are very harsh critics as I'm sure, say, Flo is about his guitar sound or you may be about a certain piano, whereas to the rest of us, as long as the instrument sounds OK, we don't ever think of that; only the playing and the feeling Django
Find the source of the noise, not noise reduction afterwards. You said you're plugged into a tascam device and the into a sonic port? What is the tascam device? I'm going to bet there's some gain staging or impedance matching issue going on. I've used the samson mic you're talking about and don't remember any noise issues.
Good advice. Having said that I often find myself recording on the fly or in the moment and I recognize afterwards exactly why good studios have such a clean room replicable set-up (which is never the way when I seem to be ready to flap my gums...)

It is a Tascam dp-008ex pocketstudio - one of my misbuys (not cheap, 200+ euros) hardly ever used it, but seems handy now as it has phantom power for the mic. I use a Tascam power adapter PS-P520 to feed the dp-008ex
If there is noise you should try turning the gain down on the pre-amp. I had the same problem and on mrufino's advice I lowered the gain and with the quieter signal the noise was gone. You can still raise the vocals in the mix, and the noise doesn't come back.
For those who need to improve their singing I'd say: instead of buying a mic/room emulation app, go and have a couple of singing lessons to get the idea. Then, most importantly SING! The more you do it, the better it gets.
Buying apps to improve singing is a bit like buying a Gibson or Fender to improve playing.
@johnnygoodyear, I currently just have the one iOS piano- Salzburg from module. Alas, 'Ivory' won't make me anything other than a crap piano player...
Buying apps to improve our musical skills / ideas / possibibilities is what it's all about.
I use MicSwap Pro all the time. I really like it and it does a decent job to my ears of mimicking the basic characters of the various microphones. I go to the ribbons a lot, in pparticular think of them as a fixed eq + stereo space designer with well-tested curves.... Ha...
As mentioned above, I agree with you. When you say 'go to the ribbons a lot' what do you mean?
@mrufino1 and @richardyot thanks for your comments on my noise issue! Good advice: find the source of the noise instead of editting it out afterwards. And lowering the gain (on my Tascam) could result in no noise. Good ideas, will try it. Thx again!
+1
great tipps!
The ribbon mic models, particularly the 77, modeled after the old RCA classic And the BLR is modeled on a Royer R121 which is a modern ribbon microphone with a very distinct sound...
Thanks. Good to know. I think of them as the blue one or the pencilly one.
Must. Do. Better.
Another typical ios problem. Tried state saving with this app in Audiobus and it says "Port unavailable" so the workaround is you can save all your other fx like say Voice Rack or Vocalive but then you manually have to open MicSwap (so do NOT save it in Audiobus)
It's like damn, every 3-6 months for the last 2-3 years, I forget all the workflow problems I had with Audiobus, come lurking here again and decide to give ios recording another try and when I really get into developing a system for creating, BS like this happens and instead of creating music, I become another beta tester/bug reporter and developing workaround upon workarounds.
Audiobus guys should just create their own DAW from beginning to end since I just need something that works. That's why desktop solutions like Ableton, Pro Tools, even Garageband are ultimately best solution since you can just CREATE..
I just bought it because it went on sale. I sent an email to the developer about Landscape mode and IOS 9 compatibility, and here's what they had to say:
"Hi David,
Thanks for writing. I'm happy to report That landscape mode is being worked on and will come out as an update soon.
We've also been working on some other very cool updates, so keep on the lookout!
Also happy to report that MicSwap and MicSwap Pro will be totally compatible with iOS 9."
It's a good app. I'm using it right now (on a break from creating) but state saving in audiobus is currently broken as it says "port unavailable" on my iphone. not a big deal but when i've got 5 apps all running at once, having to remember the settings of each one is a pain in the ass, much less remembering to have to manually open this app or that app.
Not certain I always make the most of this app, but I think it is helpful/an improvement. Disappointed there is no wardrobe function/simulator.
Ha ha! I heard that @JohnnyGoodyear,you don't need a simulator mate, just get upstairs and sing into it! I'm a huge star in Narnia!!:D
Explains a lot. We live in one of those 'walk-in closet' houses. No wonder things were better back in the days of wardrobes and roses...
