edited June 2015 in General App Discussion

I go on thesoundtestroom website daily to watch reviews or to see what sales are happening and general IOS news. I, like so many of you, have bought tons of apps because Doug has taken the time (his own precious time) to tell us what the latest app is like. He clearly doesn't have to. I bet some days he can't be arsed. But he gets himself up and motivated because he knows we're all waiting, and expecting his words of wisdom.
Even though I've been on the site hundreds of times, I've never pressed the tab at the top of the page that says 'SUPPORT'. But I feel like I'm a better person for doing so today. I owe it to him and I'm slightly embarrassed that it took me so long.
I will send a donation ( I sent $15 today) whenever I can afford to. Or even become a patron. I realise that not everyone can afford to do so. I'm not preaching. I just think he deserves our support for his endless, tireless efforts. It's so easy. A few clicks. He's always doing stuff for us. Let's do something for him.!
Keep up the good work Doug. Don't know what we'd do without you.

  • I'm hoping that the links to the various apps are referral links because I have bought so many apps after watching them on Soundtestroom and have purposefully clicking on the links on his page in the hopes that he gets a referral fee.

Good on you for your support and contribution. I know that I'd likely have spent that money on apps if I had $15 laying around, spreading the wealth to our developers too!

  • Well, certainly the first thing we can do is buy our apps via their site where we can. I do think this is a matter of self-interest. I still often go back to TSTR to view/look at older videos, check out functionality, crib tips etc., let alone watch almost every new video they guys put together. I hope it's a developing resource as well. In the sense that however useful it's been so far, as time goes by and if the site can remain viable, there will surely be other ideas and things Doug/Colin/Jacob will come up with or host.

All the above is why I am the big I am (ha) and have signed up for the princely sum of a couple of bucks a month. I know, not much, but I mention it because if enough folks contribute a little, then perhaps the site can continue, and as far as I know, for those of us who are interested in the iOS music world, there's nothing else like it.

I noticed you were a patron, Johnny.
I'm interested to see how this pans out actually. It's a bit like going into a local bakery every day. The bakery has a sign up that announces 'Free sandwiches, donations welcome!'. So how many times do you go into the bakery and take the free sandwiches before you realise it's about time I left a donation as people are starting to get onto me? I suppose if we had to shuffle awkwardly past Doug, Colin or Jacob standing in the virtual doorway every day, we may be more inclined to shove a $/£/€ in the pot occasionally.

  • Free sandwiches anyone?

  • Also, as a patron you get extra benefits like previews and competitions and stuff. As well as a warm fuzzy feeling.

  • The Patreon patron program is a great way to support iOS bloggers. I too support several of them. Jakob was just recently able to buy a new iPad in part due to these donations.

It is a ton of work to be an iOS blogger, and for most of us, it's not a paid gig. It's an "Oh great, it's 9pm and the kids are finally asleep, now I can write my app review" type of deal.

Clicking through the affiliate App Store links definitely helps, and costs you, the buyer, nothing. Also, if you click a link from one of your favorite bloggers, and then go buy any other app in the App Store (even non-music) apps, the affiliate link still works for those purchases as well. So, even if you're thinking about buying that fresh new video game, click through a blogger's link first!

Matt_Fletcher_2000, I Saw your name up there as a patron along with JohnnyGoodyear. Also johnfromberkeley. But didn't recognise any other names as being regular forum users. Of course, many people may have chosen to donate from as little as $1 rather than become a patron. That's probably the case.

  • Also the chance some suffer from online identity crisis, ex. I am not eustressor on the iPad Musician FB group.

  • That's true eustressor. I noticed the majority of patrons seemed to be from the USA. Then Germany, UK, Belgium, Canada and Australia. Only 55 in total though. Bringing in just $143 per month. Probably makes a bit in advertising space. It must be a labour of love for the three lads as it certainly wouldn't pay the mortgage. It's a unique service that we're lucky to have. One day we could turn around and it's gone!

  • I appreciate their work and involvement and plan on donating, or becoming a patron, once I get a job. Of course I've been saying that for over a year and a half now.

Not to throw a wrench in things, but I think the AB guys also get a finders fee if you buy an app when clicking on their links. I figure that since this is their forum, that should be mentioneded too.

  • The AB guys make money from selling their products to us. Doug, Colin and Jacob aren't selling a product. They're giving us something for nothing so rely on donations only.

  • Agreed @AndyE. I just thought it fair to mention, since this is their forum.

  • I agree that this small community needs to support each other. When my financial status resembles what it used to be pre-2009, i have no problem supporting the sites i frequent daily.

I like many others take for granted what info is put on the net for FREE.

  • Thanks to AndyE for this thread, and thanks to everyone who supports us, there is no way we could run the website without your support, and not all developers give us the apps for free, Korg, Stienberg and Propellerhead to name three have never given me anything at all for free, not even a thanks for the review, but we still buy them and demo them, I could not afford to that if it was not for Patreons, donations ads and links.

We do what we do for the love of music and the apps and gear, and when we get a donation or a new Patreon or a dev who wants to advertise its makes me very happy, but I also love the fact that you actually like the demos for the most part and just enjoy watching them, so thank you all for that.

Patreon is a great way to help us, from one dollar a month and you can cancel anytime you like, it's not a contract, just a kind act, and it really does help. But honestly I understand that not everyone can afford that or would even want to, and that's cool too, anyway we shall continue to do this for as long as possible, Personally I shall continue with this for as long as my health allows, I can't work full time anymore so TSTR is very important to me for the extra it provides.

I'm also grateful for all the positive feedback I get here and all the support, I sometimes get horrible comments chucked at me on You Tube, but it's never about the music it's usually about me, thing like "Stop Coughing " or "You sound like your dying" or " Get a new mic" stuff like that hurts but then I usually get people supporting me before I just delete the comment and block the person from the channel.

Oh look I've rambled on and on, hehe just like one of my videos, seriously, bless you all

And God bless you, @thesoundtestroom. My all-time favorite review, and by my reckoning your most positive, as it garnered FOUR "luvly jubblies" AND an elbow solo :)

  • God bless you too doug,

    Thx from me too,
And ignore these horrible comments, they mostly jumpers, they jump around looking here and there spit something out, and.....jump away, thats not family.

Hope your health is good, or better, now.

Doug! get to quit that smoking habbit!

I know you are a smoker.

That is the most concern for health!

We smokers need to quit that bloody thing. I won't say again, because that is the real strength by quitting it!

You are not 1st world war soldier, you are 21st century Audiobus forum group leader!
So shouldn't roll that pack of cut tobacco.

@AndyE Thank you so much for starting this thread, reading the comments from everyone here moves me to tears.

To everyone, your support means a LOT to Doug, Colin and myself. Without it, it would be hard continuing doing what we do.

Reading heartwarming comments from loving and caring musicians everyday is A real driving force!

The money we receive from our Patreons, app sales and adds really helps out in so many ways. As @Seangarland mentioned above, I was able to get a new iPad mini that was partly funded by TSTR and haQ attaQ supporters. Now I'm able to do different and more complex videos and it feels awesome. Without that support it would have taken 4-5 months more of savings to get a new pad, so thank you!

Of course we do understand that not everyone has the capacity to help out money wise. A cheering comment means just as much! :)

Before I stop with my slow-paced-droolings I would also like to thank Sebastian and the Audiobus team for letting us post here as frequently as we do!

  • Its clear that soundtestroom videos give the incentive for many to purchase the apps, more so than written reviews.

People should actually leave reviews in the appstore clearly stating that the sound test room was the deciding factor in purchasing.

This in turn would create a far more visible presence of the service to developers who would then see the value of Doug and co, and support them more.

The developers need to see the impact of the videos on their sales..

In general, the amount of appstore reviews is very poor..

Doug, the fact that you continue to review products by Korg, Steinberg and Propellerhead even though they have never given you anything for free, not even a 'thanks', shows that you do the reviews for us, not them. You're a class act. Been watching your videos for so long, you're like a living legend.
So touching to hear jakoB_haQ say he was moved to tears after reading all the comments.

  • Great idea from touchconspiracy about mentioing TSTR in your app review in the App Store.

  • 682 hits. Wonder if Doug, Colin and Jacob have received any new donations or patrons!!!

  • It's funny, I'm not sure about donations but someone actually left the Patreon program, go figure

  • That's definitely not cool beans.

  • Guess we'll have to raise our monthly pledge.

  • Wow, I haven't been on here in a while and I must say I really missed it now I see all the lovely comments about thesoundtestroom, I myself would love to support thesoundtestroom through patreon but as a few of you may know I'm only 14 so that complicates things haha but I buy all my apps from links on the site knowing that I'm helping out, only if it's a small bit, I'm still helping. I don't think there is a video out there featuring any of thesoundtestroom trio that I haven't seen, liked and shared.. I love going to thesoundtestroom.com daily and reding the comments and posting my own. Going to thesoundtestroom and seeing a brand new video really does make me happy, it gives me something to look forward to after a long boring day at school. Also coming to thesoundtestroom and here lets me meet people who I can relate to as nobody I know around my area has the slightest interest in making music or stuff like that, everyone over at thesoundtestroom have been brilliant, they have answered my questions and Jakob is just brilliant to have a chat to. If that isn't worth donating for I don't know what is and yes Jakob, I was also very moved by the kindness of the iOS community.

  • @Synthmaniac Well said. And, as a by-product, you made me just a little more optimistic that the world's going to be OK. And, no, I'm not kidding :)

  • Why thank you

  • +1 for what JohnnyGoodyear said @Synthmaniac.
