  • I have to disqualify myself from any real iOS music "Master's" sash because of my lack of understanding/use of Midi. But I am an enthusiastic Jouneyman with Auria, Beathawk, the Cinema piano in module, and Stereo Designer. A keen apprentice of many, many things with a concentration in FLUX, Auxy, Alchemy, Thor, Navichord, Samplr, Vbot, ChordPolyPad and Tin Pan.

    Best app: Simplenote

Preferred medium: MUJI ink pen and paper

    Favorite word: Spatula

    I am on lollerskates.

You must have expected me to be master of my domain.

It hasn't "clicked" for me like other.

I normally run B-Step into Gadget, but it works with pretty much any synth. The trick is to tune a whole Chordset like a guitar, with 6 of the intervals from the major or minor scale, and then use the Chord knobs for your progressions. Here's a screenshot of it tuned to A Major.

  • Here's a basic example of my workflow showing 2 hands playing a I-vi-V-IV progression in A Major, with the melody always staying in perfect harmony. And then when I want to get really crazy, I turn the chordset knob in realtime to affect key changes, like to the relative minor, as an example.

  • B Step seems worthy of mastering in that it can reward those who raise to the challenge. At least it seems like it will from over here on the apprentice side.

  • I'd love to find some good B-Step videos. It certainly looks powerful.

Well, this is a start. :)

  • I'd say DM1, Sunrizer, iKaossilator and Figure for me.

Currently working on learning BM2 to bring those apps and other synths together into a final song. Have the basics down but still a ways from mastery. Also not sure if I want to stick with it as my DAW of choice.

  • lol, I don't even have my guitar tuner "mastered". Pretty sure I'm disqualified from this study. (iStrobosoft, btw)

  • Thanks @jwmmakerofmusic. I recall watching it before, but I didn't spend enough time with B-Step afterwards to get comfortable with it. I'll have to give it another spin.

  • "The Appstore" was a nice one! Me too - sadly. :)

  • Animoog. Though I am sure there are others would not consider it mastery.

  • Auria. Now if I could mix as well as I can run auria I'll be in business!

  • I don't think you 'master' anything. For sure, you can get to the point where you know enough about an app / program to be able to express your ideas efficiently.
I've used Gadget more than anything else, but I've still a lot to learn.

    Like a guitar. Hummn.

You have motivated me to re-examine B-Step.

So you have a big library of custom presets for Sunrizer? (cough)

    Samplr

It is love/hate with this app for me.

I find that it sounds nice with some apps and some it doesn't.

There is a frequency that comes from Samplr that I can't explain.

  • I would have hoped BM2 would be mastered by now...but nope.

Use an open or a dropped tuning, so that you can play 1-finger chords. And ChordPoly and Wikipedia are good references to use when setting-up Chordsets, since you have flatten a few notes when you transpose them.

This is an ok place to start, but in the video, they tune the strings to A Minor, while it's set to the key of E, so it defeats the purpose of the chordset and key knobs. The power of B-Step comes from tuning it such a way so that it always stays in perfect harmony when you fiddle the knobs.
